This must be a rare place, to have real crab legs at a chinese buffet. Usually it's bachelor chow molded into crab leg shapes.

In order to push the discrimation issue, they're going to have to demonstrate that the restaurant has discriminated against other fat people. The article has a quote from the owner saying that is not the case. So if it's a conduct issue, then the establishment has the right to refuse service.

Edit: For the life of me I can't think of what show that quote is from...

Jesus, how fucking fat do you have to be to eat so much at a buffet to get thrown out anyway? Think of it as the owner really has your best interests in mind.

Really, you should be ashamed of eating that much in public.

After two hours in Chinese buffets the workers will start to look at you waiting for you to leave. Then they'll start asking "Are you finished?" a few times, and then the manager will start asking. Of course, they can't... kick you out... I think... But then again the buffet's here cost $12.95 - $14.95 per person.

I am on the customer's side on this one. It's buffet, all you can eat. The restaurant should have a policy and disclose any additional charges, but they didn't.

Not where I live. Of course I haven't been to the buffet in 5 years but I doubt things have changed all that much.

What? Next you're going to tell me that the sesame chicken down there has sesame seeds and the hot and sour soup is either hot or sour.

i don't understand why chinese restaurants got so much bad press for MSG. pretty much anything you buy these days (chips, bread, soups, etc) contains MSG, or monosodium glutamate. Even hydrolyzed proteins used in alot of products are just another form of MSG.

$9.95 doesn't mean 8 plates of crab legs

buffet places should be able to charge more. airlines should also be able to charge more if you weigh 3 times as much as a normal person and take up two seats. is it politically correct? Hell, no that's why I love it.

They can charge more. They just have to sell a meal that says, 5 plates of crab legs, everything else all you can eat. Additional plates of crab legs $4.

But they didn't, they sold him all you can eat from this entire buffet. They should hold up their end. I don't have a problem with the airline charging you more if you exceed certain dimensions, but they shouldn't come up to you with a card reader mid flight and charge you extra. Just make the details public before the transaction and customers will choose where to eat/fly.

yeah that was sneaky of them, but then again he comes in every week to eat sometimes 3 times a week for 8 months and eats $50 in food and expects to pay $9.95 each time?

It's called common sense and common courtesy and the fat dude just took advantage of the restaurant. One of my co-workers knows of a couple that have been kicked out and forbidden from certain places that have buffets. What they should have done was tell him before hand that they were going to start charging him double or forbid him entry(most places usually have a sign saying something to the effect that they have the right to refuse service to anyone)

But do the math 8 months times about 2 times a week on average, he probably ate $1500-$1800 worth of food and paid about $300 for it.

Why should the establishment have to eat the cost of someone who wantonly abuses the system?

They shouldn't, however no matter how you slice it the customer should have been warned before being presented with extra charges on his check ... I would have refused to pay the extra myself.

Also I've seen Chinese buffets that had certain items which were not included in the "all you can eat" like crab-legs & jumbo shrimp however those items were clearly marked as such which is 100% fair.

Especially seeing as how no significant ill effects have been scientifically demonstrated from ingestion of typical amounts of MSG. It's funny how people are so distrustful of the modern medical establishment, but will trust some crackpot hippy spouting some pseudo-scientific alternative medicine idiocy who just happens to come along and rail against some random artifical flavoring.

6' 3" 277 isn't that fat. It's just...hefty. He might be a wide guy as well (skeletally). A family friend is a very hearty eater. We took him to a local buffet once and he ate several plates worth of food. ~260-70 pounds is pretty good for him. It might make business hard for the buffet, but "all you can eat" should mean just that. They could put a limit on the expensive foods, where you pay more if you go over.

Same here. I don't weigh 277 pounds, but I'm far shorter, so I'm certainly fatter than the guy mentioned in the article. That said, I eat the least of everyone in my immediate family (who are all smaller than I am), and usually less than anyone else when I go out with friends.

My mother used to like going to a Chinese Buffet near her office... but I hated going because the employees were rude and did everything short of literally pushing you out the door. I was thrilled to recently read that they were closed for a brief period, when the Department of Homeland Security raided their facility, and all but one or two of their employees were arrested. :D

To be fair, most people don't have the time to robustly research every little thing they hear.

Good for the restaurant. They are losing money on these two on a consistant basis. So they decided to cut them out of their razor thin margins.

False advertising? Sure, bring it to court and see who wins. I can guarantee it won't be the two gluttons.

True, I'm 6' 4" and about 285. If you saw me, you wouldn't say I'm a big fatass. I have a belly, but not a big giant gut. I'm just a big dude.
Nobody can believe I weigh what I do when I tell them. The "guess your weight" dudes at the fair always put me at 20+lbs less that what I really weigh.

But some folks don't carry their weight like I do. I've seen plenty of guys my height and weight that are all belly.

hmm... i might have to go to this resturuant when i go to houma for work. hmmm...

like others have menrioned in this thread. reminds ome of comcast and their "umlimited service. same here. i don't think the customers did anything wrong.

i know from first hand experience about workking offshore, not as part of the rig crew though... but it can be tough not to gain weight out there. there is a lot of food available to eat, and people take of advantage of it.
