Apple definitely seems to know what people want while everyone else is playing catch up.

Microsoft is still in a geeky frame of mind - honestly, about the only non-geeky cool thing they released last year was the Kinect.

Huh..never heard of the Courier until I googled it - interesting device, but looks a bit too "business" when compared with the ipad [which looks like FUN].

MS needs to get out of the "business" frame of idea and start making more fun products like the Kinect.

It's a bit of a moot point though since it never made it into production.

The iPad is a real device and Courier was just a Flash demo. It never existed and if it ever made it to market my guess is the final product would only vaguely resemble the demo.

Remember the E3 2009 Kinect (Project Natal) "demos"? Maybe 10&#37; of what they showed made it to the final product.

Not a Microsoft hater at all, but 2010 was not their year. Windows 7 was/is great for them, but they are getting steamrolled by multiple companies on a number of fronts.

I run a mixture of devices from both companies and I have to say, I'm impressed by both as well.

Microsoft devices I use: Windows 7 (media center computer/web browsing/games) driving my 52" TV. Windows Home Server. Xbox 360.

I love how all of these devices integrate so well with each other. WMC7 is excellent in terms of interface and ease of use. It records all my OTA TV and sends it right to the WHS for streaming on my network. The WHS also backs up the W7 machine. The Xbox is great because I can stream TV to it if I'm too lazy to switch inputs. I also use it as a jukebox that streams from the server if I have people over or am playing online.

As for Apple, I have the following devices: an Early 2010 13" MBP and an iPhone 4. The intergration between the different products is top notch here also. However, I wish I could backup Snow Leopard to WHS like those with the HP systems can do. I think the iPhone 4 is a great device and have no issues with it.

I'm a very tech-oriented person and wouldn't hesitate for a minute to recommend any of the products I've mentioned to friends and families. I've tried over and over again to get my parents and siblings to let me build them a small WHS so they have some sort of backups in place but it's a tough sell. I know people hate on Macs sometimes because the users can be smug but that's not the case with me. As far as company success, I couldn't really say. All I can say is that both companies are putting out some excellent products and did well in 2010.

Anyway, to my point, sustained sales are all that matters. What's the most Kinect will ever sell? 30M? And the margins on it must suck compared to the iPod.

Microsoft did nothing this year besides convince most analysts that they were correct in labeling them a one-trick pony.

As much as I like a lot of their products, this year has been nothing but more disappointment from Redmond and a further underscore of how out of touch they are with what consumers want and how unable they are to innovate and stay up with current consumer technology.

My argument is that your argument is specious. The success of a product in a totally difference category doesn't diminish the success of Kinect.

I think the Kinect has had great sales thus far as it released just before the holiday season without much competition. I've used my nephews Kinect, and while it has the neato factor, the lag is annoying and it will really depend on the ability of developers to utilize it in great games for it to be a real success. If no 'must have' games come out before the next holiday season, it will simply fade away as another gimmick that initially sold on hype but didn't have substance.
