Its not a total failure as your earlier post suggested.. bing now powers both its own and Yahoo's search engine. How much of a success is that? I don't know, but its definitely not a failure.

its a failure when compared to the massive hype it generated when it launched. That's not directly MS's fault but they didn't try to set expectations either.

The better question might be....is Bing bringing in any profits?

  • Passed in market cap by Apple
  • Dead last place in mobile
  • Xbox 360 essentially tied with the PS3 for last place
  • Online Services division bleeding money
  • Stock flat as a washboard

Yeah, year of Microsoft alright. More like the year people stopped giving a shit about them.

And comparing a $500+ device to a $150 accessory for "fastest selling device"? Classy.

Microsoft's global market share hasn't changed at all with the switch from MSN/Live to Bing. 0% increase since 2008.

Bing powering Yahoo is less of a win for Bing as it is a failure for Yahoo. It was all about Yahoo cutting costs.

I was ready to buy a Courier the second I saw the tech demo unveiled. Then Microsoft cancelled it, so I got an iPad instead. Microsoft really are their own worst enemy. They don't really innovate, not like they used to.

Say what you will about Apple, but they've actually introduced some very innovative consumer products. Plus, they've combined that with innovative advertising. They're more willing to take risks than MS is. That's their biggest problem. The original Xbox is a perfect example of what they did right. Now they just have to do more of that.

So...another year for MS. No real innovation other than improving on the Wii's motion sensing.
That's really not fair at all. Kinect technology is not even peripherally related to Wii tech. Kinect relies on several cameras and directional microphones, and uses image recognition to figure out where the user is (and who the user is). Wii is extremely simplistic - it uses a single camera to find two infrared beams.

.

Yeah, the moment they saw the positive reaction people had to Courier they should have done whatever it took to put it into production. If they had managed to follow through with it they had a real chance at killing the iPad but instead they are betting everything on OEMs being able to put Windows in a iPad like system. In the long run the hardware will probably be up to that task but by the time that happens Apple and Google will already have sold millions of tablets.

Well then, let's see just how successful they (Bing and Yahoo combined) were in 2010:

November 2009 vs November 2010 (latest data available)

Yahoo: 17.5% vs 16.4%
Microsoft: 10.3% vs 11.8%
Combined: 27.8% vs 28.2%, or 1.44% gain year over year.
Google 65.6% vs 66.2%, or 0.91% gain year over year.

Yeah, it's no failure per se, but it's not really much of a success either.

This is only US market share. Considering the US consists of about 4.25% of the population, I'd say looking at global performance is a better indicator for success.

Apple has $150 and lower devices too.

I found the Global stats:

December 2009 vs December 2010

All MS and Yahoo: 10.47% vs 9.39%, a loss of 10.32% year over year
Google: 82.1% vs 85.1%, a gain of 3.65% year over year
Baidu: 5.31% vs 3.31%, a loss of 37.66% year over year

The global stats don't help MS.

Let me know when Kinect sells 260 million units as the iPod did. umad?
That's a completely unreasonable comparison. The Kinect market is limited to gamers who own an XBox 360. iPod market is anyone who likes music or wants to look cool with white ear buds.

So is comparing the iPad to Kinect. Even then, the iPad costs on average 5x that of Kinect which makes Microsoft's bolstering kind of weak.

FASTEST selling. Comprehension. Look it up.

Sales are front loaded. Of course a device that launches on the holidays will sell a lot to start. If the iPad launched in November we would not even be having this discussion.

Anyway, to my point, sustained sales are all that matters. What's the most Kinect will ever sell? 30M? And the margins on it must suck compared to the iPod.

Let's not forget that the iPod has about 500 revisions of its own - each of which are not like one another. Touch, Classic, Nano, Shuffle and all the different generations of each.

Apple definitely seems to know what people want while everyone else is playing catch up.

Microsoft is still in a geeky frame of mind - honestly, about the only non-geeky cool thing they released last year was the Kinect.

Huh..never heard of the Courier until I googled it - interesting device, but looks a bit too "business" when compared with the ipad [which looks like FUN].

MS needs to get out of the "business" frame of idea and start making more fun products like the Kinect.

I'm not sure of your definition, but the stock market certainly beg the differ.

Year to date MSFT is down 8%, NASDAQ up 17%, ORCL up 27%, AAPL up 53%.

i really don't care for W7. i still much prefer the latest Linux distros with KDE in many ways. i just use W7 cause i game a lot. for the most part im sure MS has had its gains, but as a consumer i don't prefer most of their products. Kinect looks cool if your into that sort a thing.
