I gave the demo a try...

PROS

It's fun! The violence portrays the harsh battles of the WH40K universe well. Some of the weapons pack a nice punch when fired. Animations are great, transition between ranged and melee is fast and seamless.

CONS

Most of the sounds (not all, there's exceptions) feel "weak". The camera is a bit too close to the action for my tastes, would appreciate zooming out more to a certain extent. Teammates basically have no A.I. to assist you, they walk, fire a few shots, sometimes they literally stand still doing nothing while one or a few Orks chase me around, extremely disappointed by that aspect so far, I really feel like I'm doing all the work which shouldn't be the case in a Space Marines squad. The levels (in the demo, that is) are small and linear, no exploration, no wandering Orks you can ambush or attack by surprise, they always seem to see you coming (hearing Space Marines coming beforehand though is a given, I admit, they tend not to be the silent kinda bunch of people for sure), and the Orks come in "waves", usually at the last of which comes one or a few bigger ones as pseudo bosses. There's a mind-blowing lack of video options (what the hell Relic?).

If the game auto-detects a USB controller chances are that it will consider it to be a 360 controller, therefore it will "disable" (I.E remove) the mouse cursor as soon as you get to the main menu. I had my MadCatz Fightpad connected (and automatically detected by the game), and the cursor was gone. So after restarting the game a few times and checking the actual game's installation files to manually edit options to enable the disappeared mouse cursor I thought "alright, let's just disconnect the controller itself", which fixed the problem. The damn thing is so consolized that it actually auto detects controllers and REMOVES the mouse cursor from the screen in the process (which sucks). If you guys want to play with a mouse and keyboard and are wondering why you don't have a mouse cursor at the main menu with the "A" and "B" buttons of a 360 controller showing up on the interface then you'll know why, just saying.

The music is far from comparable to the epic feel of the DoW 2's soundtrack, it's decent I guess, but so far (in the demo) it's disappointing, except perhaps for the music playing at the main menu, but that's about it. Give me back my Angels of Death theme while I blow them Orks to bits please, thanks.

Also, why no helmets? They don't even have beards to show off for crying out loud!

CONCLUSION

Well it's a demo, and I skipped a couple of other elements I didn't liked. I must say that overall I'm more disappointed than anything else... BUT... the non-negligible thing to consider (kinda speaking to myself from this point) is that I'm a sucker for Warhammer 40K material and media, and games. I buy pretty much all of them (except for that Fire Warrior stuff on the PS2), plus I bow to His Power and anything related to the Craftworld Eldar makes me a happy man. So... yeah I will buy it. All I want is to bash some heretic skulls too, I like blowing up some Orks like everyone but I want more variety. And if I get to pilot a Dready at any point in the game I'll have to fedex Relic some cookies for sure.

Well, I'll give it a solid 7.0/10 so far.

I played the demo and thought it was a blast for as long as it lasted, about 20 minutes. The only negative I noticed is that I feel like the gameplay could get repetitive before too long but as long as they keep the story strong and the weapons and encounters varied, I think it won't be that noticeable.

I thought the small bit of the story I saw was solid, as soon as I got the message from the 'guy' trapped in the manufactorum I wanted to go after him, it really conveyed the urgency and scale of the situation.

I think the game looks outstanding and played very well on a 5770, though I couldn't select my native resolution (1680x1050) for some reason so I had to play at 1600x900. The options interface is a bit lacking but I'm sure that'll be fixed by retail.

The game was somewhat hard for me at first, at least once I got to the encounter at the lift at the end of the demo, there's a lot of enemies and you will probably die if you just rambo. Though you can also recover a lot of health by performing an 'execution', which I didn't actually realize until the end, the demo has no tutorial of any sort so without reading the instructions (which undoubtedly none of us will do 😀) you may have missed some of the more advanced combat abilities.

And the fly/jump demo was awesome, the first time you ground stomp onto an Ork will bring a "oh man that was fucking cool" to anyone's lips. Though that's also one of those things I feel like could get old pretty fast too.

Overall, very positive impression. Plays kind of like a good third person action game with God of War influence.

I tried the demo too yesterday.

I felt there was something missing the whole time I played. I did not felt like a Space Marine at all except for the movement which felt quite nice. The heavy battle armor felt...well...heavy.

But overall, I won't pay $50 for the game, even though I sooo wanted to love it. I'll wait something like a 50% off before buying.

BTW, a little off topic but, I just bought the first 3 books from the Space Marine Battles Novel series. I just finished the first book yesterday called Rynn's World. Simply an awesome read!!!! Now i'm gonna start Helsreach and then The Hunt for Voldorius.

I recommend this series to any W40K fans!

Darkewaffle, to get your proper resolution you'll have to go through the aspect ratios to find one that matches your monitor. For 16:10, it's the 8:5 option(why they don't call it 16:10, which is the standard nomenclature, is beyond me).

Huh, well that'd be it. I saw the 8:5 but it didn't register as 16:10 to me lol, I guess that's what I get for playing at 1am.

Helsreach the second in the series is probably the best one of them all IMO. I liked Rynn's World a lot myself as well. It had a very fighting for our existence feel to it.

I hate it when games do that shit. I have a 360 controller for playing emulators. I almost never want to use it for anything else and having to disconnect it because they decided to force me to use it if they see it's connected is a huge pain in the ass.

Was poking around the SM forums and those crazy bastards have already been modding the demo. Can't wait to see what gets done with the fullgame 😀

Amazing. Can't believe NastyNoodle got so much quality art finished in such a short time (it's a couple weeks old now, but it was right after the demo went live). I'm drooling over what they're gonna do when it hits stores! Yet another reason why PC > console.

Just noticed. Space Marine has been removed from Steam?

Can no longer find it on the UK Steam system.

EDIT: All explained here

Ill give it a 7/10 but I'm probably not going to buy it. It doesn't capture the feel of a space marine squad. It's pretty fun but they missed out on a lot of details that really make the game.

As for no helmets, Iron halo is supposed to make it useless because it provides the shield anyway. As to why the other guys don't have their helmets ( I assume you're of captain rank), I have no idea.

I am surprised no one mentioned anything about the awesome jetpack mission in the demo. Put simply, it ROCKS. No game developer has done anything like this before. Please name me one game where you get to fly with a jetpack AND use it in the same awesome way.... I dare ya. I double dare ya!

I am usually the bitchy/whiny type too when it comes to disappointing games, but I think the previous posters have gone too far with their criticism.

1)No helmets.... So what? I think the devs removed the helmets to add some personality. You cant relate to a bunch of faceless characters. Yeah, it would be nice to be able to put on helmets just because you can.. but bleh.. Whatever...

2)Xbox controller is auto-detected. So what? I didn't have one connected and I didn't have that problem. And if I did, I'd disconnect it. Not a huge con imo. And I didnt feel like the game was too colonized or anything like that.

3)AI feels like its not doing anything.... I didn't have time to analyze that. Was too busy SLAUGHTERING, OWNING and RAPING to worry about that. And the game does a great job at giving that feel.

I agree about the lack of epic music - that's a real shame. Someone decided on saving money in that deppt and that was a huge mistake. A warhammer game needs an epic soundtrack!!!

What this Relic game really lacks is some RPG elements found in their RTS releases. They should have given us the option to find loot, equip various armors, weapons, items, etc.... But maybe they thought that it would be silly for orcs to "drop" marine armors and weapons... Game feels too much like a pure FPS, and yes, camera is too close...

someone is going to have no life, and build a starcraft 2 map, with all the war40k races, and it will become the next DOTA-successor from war3, becoming a world-wide phenom for just the map alone.

btw, the gameplay is bl00dy

I got to play for 30 minutes or so last night, and yes, it's consolish. I need to see if there's a way to increase the default camera distance, as it's difficult to see all the enemies around you.

Also needs a high-res texture pack. Pretty badly.

So far the storyline isn't OTT stupid, and they haven't yet crossed the line by having Marines asking each other things they should already know as Space Marines just for the benefit of the player (e.g. "What's that?" "Oh, that's a Servitor. Inquisitors use them for stuff." "Oh great, thanks, I didn't know that despite being a Space Marine for 60 years".)

Looking forward to trying the MP, but so far I have to also give it a 7/10. The atmosphere could be darker, there could be more weapons, more moves, combo varieties, more varied execution moves, etc. It's a good game that needs more complexity.

Played a few more hours and now Chaos has made their appearance. It is great fun to see orcs/guard/demos/chaos space marines all battling it out

uploaded more picks to the link in the other post as well if you are interested.

Not yet, I plan to once I beat the game, which I think is soon. As a WH40k fan I really am enjoying the game, I wish there was more hidden stuff to find besides the messages, I go every area before moving to the next regardless lol.

I'm somewhat on and off working on one.

Trying to make TT into a SC map is sorta hard.

Oh come on, no one else picked this up? I'm on the last fight (or so I think) and have had a total blast playing the game so far. You would think it gets repetitive but it doesn't. You get new weapons and upgrades as you play and the story is solid. The jump pack levels are an absolute blast to play as well and break up the pace and the environments are great as well, you get a good feeling how big everything is. If you are looking for some down right fun combat where hiding behind cover means you are a pussy then this game is for you.

This game is a blast. Played 3 hours so far, and I had to force myself to quit so I don't stay up all night. Also like that they included those audio logs to look for, helps with the backstory.

I do have one suggestion though, download and use the FXAA hack. This game doesn't support MSAA due to differed lighting, with AMD disabling the ability to force it through the drivers(with the latest set of drivers) and some Nvidia user reporting that forcing it will make the screen go black(don't have an Nvidia card so I can't confirm though). Relic included an edge-detect AA algorithm, but as usual it doesn't work very well. Forcing MLAA just blurs the image too much and you lose a lot of fidelity, but FXAA does a good job of blending the edges without that drawback.

I finally managed to play the demo about a week and a half ago. I played through the demo once, uninstalled it, and forgot about it until now. It wasn't necessarily bad or anything, but it just didn't have enough to draw me in or want to spend $50 to get the full version. Got kinda bored about halfway through the demo, honestly, though once I picked up the hammer it "refreshed" the game a bit with the new animations.

I think I'll wait till it hits the bargin bin or one of Steam's sales. I'd still like to play it, just not at MSRP. If the game had an attribute/skill/development system or some sort of itemization I'd probably go for it sooner since that would give me an objective beyond the rote grinding of enemies. That, or a decently long single player narrative that was literarily gripping.

Just not my cup of tea 🙂
