With the standard (non-FPS) keyset W puts you into a dive (w/s control elevator) and shift/ctrl are accel/decel. Sounds like you might be using the FPS keyset which I haven't used at all. *shrug*
Yep I'm guessing that's the FPS key setup. Genx, I'd suggest switching your key setup and use the other one. I don't use accel/decel at all unless I want to engage WEP for a burst of extra speed, or decelerate when I'm coming up too fast on a target or when I want someone behind me to overshoot me so I can get on their tail (or when landing, of course).

I changed to the classic setup and tried it out in a test flight. I think the issue is I lose track of mouse aim circle in the sky and any elevation in a turn sends my elevators to max pitch in shooter mode. I dont know why it does this, but it causes the planes controls to largely lock up until I disengage the turn. Hence the slow spiral of death unless I stop the turn and climb out of it.

The classic mode seems to help some with this as I can get the plane into a turn and control the elevator more to keep this from happening.

Not sure if it is a bug or by design. But hopefully classic mode fixes this.

I was dogfighting way to close to the ground the other day and while banking left my left wing clipped a tree. It damaged the control surface so I was stuck in a permanent left bank. I made it until the end of the game flying like that and even shot down two planes :D My wings were nearly vertical , but it still flew straight even though it was on its side

So I played some British planes and really like them compared to the early German planes. The Hurricane is much better than the HE112 or Italian planes. The MKII with 12 .50cals? Shread people. It is amazing the difference in the two lines. I play the Germans and it is lucky if I get 1 kill. With the Brits, I am sitting around 3-5 a game.

The better manueverability of the brits is noticeable.

Yeah, German line is generally considered weak compared to the rest, especially in the early tiers. Russia is considered OP and Brittian is very good as well. I personally prefer British planes to the other countries but Russia would be my second choice.

Beaufighters (British) are notoriously OP/broken right now due to the placeholder flight model they're using. Plus they have awesome firepower, so a player who knows how to fly them (DO NOT TURN NEAR OTHER PLANES) can kick major ass since they are available at tier 5.

The Russian tier 2 I16 is pretty OP as well. It has 6 machine guns and rockets and is relatively fast and nimble. I had that plane in my lineup until I got up to tier 8 or so and it usually did well.

Changing to classic setup has completely changed how the planes fly. It took a little getting used to the different keys. But no more death spirals and my kills per game has drastically improved in the German tree. Planes feels much more stable when shooting.

After playing a ton over the last few weeks, I'm going to go ahead and say it's a great game; but I wouldn't spend a dime on it, nor would I buy any of their starter packs. Here's why:

Playing any tier but the starting tiers is just silly. Half the content isn't finished. Planes will literally have unrealistic flight models, causing them to either ram you and take no damage or being able to take massive amounts of fire and still survive. Matchmaking is TERRIBLE during prime-time; expect jets in your reserve matches. Planes ramming bombers and not taking ANY damage at all. I've had so many bombers destroyed by planes ramming into my bomber and they fly away. This patch has broke a TON of things, and they still have a lot to finish. They took an older game they made and basically gave it the WoT spin. You can tell by the amount of "coming soon" and beta models. Half the planes don't even have correct hitboxes. This is ontop of the 200ms, terrible registry, and other bugs that take away from gameplay.

With all that aside, it's a fun game if you look past the issues. It really is World of Tanks with planes...........imbalances, bugs, and all. Personally, I can't see someone putting money into this game. If I told any of my friends I put money into a F2P where I got a "monthly" account they'd probably laugh at me. Some of the Freemium planes are a bit retarded, too. To each their own I guess.

P.S. the game isn't very enjoyable the higher you level. I've still found the most enjoyment playing the stock planes; the battles are ten times more balanced and iintense. Later on it becomes just a climb and dive ordeal making the game almost as boring as WoT.

I very rarely ran into jets until I hit rank 9 or 10 and now they seem to be about every other match. I still have a ton of fun playing the game though, imbalances and all. However, the lack of a good working matchmaker does suck and I'll be happy when that's implemented. I'll also be happy when they get a US server so I can play with <200ms ping. I still do relatively well though, even with missing due to lag. They do a very good job of hiding the lag from the player though, for the most part. It's only really glaring when a few players are jumping around a little or when you watch a replay and see that almost all your shots were trailing behind your targets because the replay doesn't account for lag like the in-game visuals do.

But as you say, to each their own. I'm loving the game right now and I'll love it more when it's finished.

I'm getting occasional dips into the mid-40's frames per second and it feels a bit jittery and unsmooth at that point. Even at 53'ish I can exhibit similar jitteriness. If I am reading the FPS gauge correctly in the top left hand corner it seems like the latency between the frames is increasing at that point also (microstutter likely).

After I've made this post I'm going to limit my FPS to 40 with RadeonPro and observe what happens.

System:
Intel i5 2500K @ 3.4ghz
3Gb HD7950 @ stock (Yep, I'm aware of AMD's global microstutter issue with some 7xxx gen cards and I'm running the very latest beta Catalysts)
8Gb DDR3 @ 1600mhz
SSD - OS Drive
2 drives in RAID0 - WT Drive

Ping: Stable at ~60ms

WT Settings: Custom @ 1920x1080 res.

Does anyone else have any similar experiences with WT or similar hardware experiencing constantly smooth gameplay? I'm betting on my issue being microstutter (had 2 x 6870's in CrossfireX previously so I'm aware of what it can look like) but I thought I'd post to see if anyone has similar and if we can resolve it.

Can you disable one of the cards? My game has been running a constant 60fps with custom settings. It appears latency doesnt cause the game to stutter for me unlike WoTs.

Got the Spitfire last night. That thing is really stable for shooting and turns on a dime.

Disable my only 7950 and run it on Intel graphics?

Rocking the first 3 109s. Finally no more HE112s or T3 Italian fighters. Feel like my lineup actually is pretty decent now. The BF110 is for the first bombing wave and maybe taking a pot shot at somebody before its wings come off. Literally every mission a wing comes off lol.

Then onto the rest of the fleet that is quite capable. So nice to be able to outrun bi-planes now lol.

Yeah, rank 7 for Germans is a big upgrade. I use 2 S79's for my bombers. 5x250kg is pretty nice.

Watching "Dogflights" on Netflix is showing air tactics. It's kind of fun watching simulated planes that are the same as in this game.

Yeah "Dogfights" is great. I should check out some more episodes now that I've been playing War Thunder (and am getting into Rise of Flight).

British line is simply sick for me. I got into the 2nd Spitfire this weekend. Unless it is a mountain map I am getting 8+ kills a game. Had a 12 and 13 kill game last night with 1 plane lost each.

Find mountain maps difficult to get as many kills due to the terrain splintering up the fighting.

Haven't tried the Brits yet but from what I gather their planes are top-notch. That Beaufighter seems like it is a frickin beast.

I actually prefer the mountainous maps more than the flat ones. They make the matches more interesting and varied I think.

I just wish I was better at the game. Playing the Russians definitely makes it easier compared to the Germans, but I still suck pretty hard. I don't think I've had a game with more than 4 kills. My usual tactic is to hold back just a bit at the start until the dogfights start happening, and then start choosing teammates to help and go after the targets. I try to stick together with my team cause once someone gets on my tail I'm typically fucked, so I try to stay close for the help. Come to think of it, it doesn't help a heck of a lot though, as most teammates are usually too "tunnel visioned" to come to anyone's aid.

Beaufighters are broken right now due to a place holder flight model. They perform way too good :D They will eventually get nerfed when they get their flight model.

I love the brits but ran into their achilles heel. The Japanese. Holy god when a zero gets on your arse pray to the god of skinny punks somebody can help you out. Cant out run them, cant out turn them.

I used free experience to get to lvl 7 in the Soviet airforce. I tried out those OP SOBs and did nothing except get my Lagg shot down and the Yak1B had to get a repair job at our airfield lol. But I blame the fact it was a night game in the mountains :D

But the differentiation between the nations is nice. Even in arcade you can feel some of it. Boom and zoomed the enemy airfield on stalingrad. Got a couple sitting there repairing. On my last boom I zoomed out back towards our guys in my BF109-Trop. Beaufighter chased me but couldnt catch up. When he turned back I pulled up and rolled over to head back and do it again :)

Ok I have about 20 hours of gameplay now and am rank 7 Germany, 7 USSR, and 6 Britain, so I consider myself decently experienced and usually finish in the top 3-5 on my team in score. I am unlocking planes a lot faster than I can get credits to buy them and after getting bored grinding tier 3-4 Soviet bombers, I heard that getting a lineup of reserve and tier 0-1 aircraft was a good moneymaker.

It was worse than than tier 2 seal clubbing in World of Tanks. 3 consecutive missions with 3500+ score, well over double the second best player on my team, and banked 40-50k silver per game. I was racking up achievements left and right....fighter, bomber, air win streaks, rescuer, on hand, fighter's nightmare, you name it. At one point I flew into a massive dogfight and downed 5 aircraft, getting 2 consecutive double air strikes and a fighter hunter all in the span of about 30 seconds. I bought the tier 1 Catalina premium just in case I got into a mission with pillboxes, but so far I've only had ground strikes with soft targets like armored cars and artillery that you can clean up with machine guns, so it looks like Gaijin fixed it because I know that used to be a problem.

Also the matchmaking seems vastly improved. I don't think I saw anything above tier 1, which was the highest I brought. No more Bf 109s in reserve matches.

Update on the reserve plane farming:

The credits keep flowing, 6 wins in a row now. The second to last match (Krymsk) was by far the funniest. It's a map with just one large airfield in the middle that takes longer than normal to capture, so it's complete chaos with 2-3 planes constantly trying to capture while 15 people are dogfighting overhead. I'd never played it before and I entered in the Catalina to try and capture the airfield without getting shot down. I ended up misjudging the landing because I didn't know it takes ~10 seconds to capture, so I ran out of runway to take off and had to come to a full stop. For the rest of the match, enemy planes took suicidal strafing runs at me, including at least 3 that tried to kamikaze ram which only damaged the Catalina but didn't destroy it. I was like a stationary AA fortress and got 5 kills from turret gunners and as many assists. The match lasted less than 10 minutes and I was never actually destroyed.

FYI, people can't ram you on the ground. They'll attempt it but while you're on the ground plane collision is turned off (and damage from their explosions don't hurt you either). This is done so you don't accidentally ram your own team-mates when lading and taking off. Bullets and bombs will still kill you though.

It's amusing when people try it, I like to inform them of this fact afterwards to both help them in the future and make them fume a bit for wasting their plane. :)
