I do this too, but my natural instinct is to throw away a useless piece of paper in my hand at the nearest waste basket. This has resulted in several instances where a wallmart employee has tried to accuse me of stealing some product (which really is quite insulting when you make 100k and someone treats you like somebody who needs to steal 20$ items). A couple times i have just walked the greeter guy back to the line where i bought it and had the person there validate that i had actually bought it. Other times I don't feal like wasting time and just walk out with the guy calling after me. Never had one pursue past the doors though.

Maybe if you wrote "I make $100k a year so I am incapable of theft" on your forehead so those losers won't stop you anymore.

You throw your receipt out before you're out of the store - when you know they commonly check receipts? A little common sense goes a long way. Are you sure you deserve that $100k?

If they ever call the police on you, guess what they're going to ask you for? That's right - your receipt. Sure, you don't have to have it..but it makes things a lot easier. But I guess for some people, it's easier to think "Well I make WAY more money than you, so ah heck off."

#1 reason not to show your receipt - it's your right not to, and there's a decent chance that some time, somewhere, you're going to get tackled & make a year or two's salary through a lawsuit. :p (j/k)

Seriously though, I never knew that Walmart asked for receipts. I can only think of a handful of times when someone has asked me for my receipt - it was rather inconvenient as I always put it in with my debit card. I can understand stores' need to have someone check at the door, particularly when, like this case, they have checkouts in the middle of the store. But when I'm at the check out 15 feet from the idiot who's checking receipts, I have the urge to yell "hey idiot checking receipts - I'm over here paying for my stuff! Do you see me paying for my stuff over here?! Watch me walk from the checkout to the door - make sure I don't steal something during those 15 feet!"

You do not give up any liberty by willingly allowing someone to check your receipt as you walk out a door. There is nothing wrong with choosing not to exercise a right in the interest of being a polite member of society.

If you had a hard time understanding, the point of this thread is that he was not willing to. Ive bolded the parts that are important for your ease of comprehension.

Need more explanation as to how that differs from what you said?

dude should have called the cops immediately and pressed charges against the person who tackled him.

I'd call the cops and press charges right away. There's nothing douchy about protecting your civil liberties.

I think everyone here would agree that the action taken against the person in the OP is over the top. What mugs was quite obviously referring to is fags who insist on making things difficult for everyone in the name of "liberty", which is just a cover for deliberately acting like a complete asshole.

We don't expect to be tackled for not showing our receipt, obviously. But if you know you're going to be stopped, whether you're legally required to demonstrate ownership or not, why not just show the receipt? Why not just be polite and not a total dick?

If one is really so put off by the receipt-showing, then I would posit that a letter saying as much, addressed to the corporate office, would be much more effective than 'sticking it to the man' by ignoring some poor worker's pleas to show them your receipt. Of course, that would take far to long to do, and so it is much easier to just act like a jerk while claiming you are doing so to stand up for freedom everywhere....

Hah, srsly, why the extreme talk of "my rights" and shit in here? Sure, i'm legally allowed to walk up and sit next to a pregnant lady and start smoking. Can i assert my rights to freedom by doing so? Yep. Do i? Nope, cause that's just a dick move. I show my receipt when there isn't a line, but if there is, i walk out.... Just be a member of society and get on with your life!

Oh look, you've insulted my intelligence several times. I'm insulted, and I feel stupid. Please go back and look at the post you were replying to; I was replying to your post in the context of the post that you were replying to.

Thank you for accurately summarizing my feelings on receipt checks.

Youre either drunk or trolling. The point was extremely simple and it went right over your head. Commence your nerd-raging. :sneaky:

Yeah, because not showing your receipt because youre in a hurry is totally the same as blowing cig smoke in the face of a preg lady.

ANALOGY FAIL.

No store can require you to show receipt unless it is a membership store such as Costco and it is stated in their membership policy.

As soon as the transaction occurred the xbox became his private property and he is under no legal obligation to show proof of ownership to anyone.

I always get a chuckle out of the "if you don't like having to show a receipt then shop somewhere else!"

The problem is, MANY stores are adopting this policy. Not much we can do when they're ALL checking receipts, is there?

The point of the matter is this: the store would like to check your receipt when you leave. You have a CHOICE whether to oblige them or not. Doing so is a very minor inconvenience but you are not required to do so nor can they force you to.

Don't rag on people if they choose not to show their receipt. Be happy we live somewhere where that choice exists instead of trying to ostracize those who exercise that right.

I hate the litigious society that we have become, but in this circumstance I think it is warranted. He should have called the police right then and there and filed a report.

Given that it probably didn't actually happen that would prove awkward.

reading fail. did you even read it? really? the point i was trying to make was just because something isn't illegal, or you have the "right" to it, doesn't mean you necessarily should. I mentioned that in the post didn't i? i said it myself, if there is a line and i can't wait, that's different than blowing off the receipt checker because "it's my right, and i'm going to excersize that right" Yep, you can, but to what end?

Pretty sure that arm bar shouldn't result in a dislocated shoulder. If you want to get sued, go for it...

When i shop at wall mart and target for instance, I will walk past the receipt checker if there is a line, unless asked to do so. At that point you are in essence cutting in front of the other people waiting in line just so the employee can mark your receipt. Bing, bang, boom..done!

This thread has been a hoot to read though. With regards to the OPs... the private citizen acted overzealiously in trying to stop aguy he percieved to be an alleged theif. Just becuase he had good intentions, doesn't mean what he did was right.

this topic has been beaten to death from all sides... heck I even posted a story about a similiar issue for a guy in Ohio last year.
