your attempt to make a point relating to this discussion bely a very immature, uninformed mind.

My point, which you apparently did not get, is that there is very little in this world which does not have the potential to be offensive to some portion of the world's population. Forever associating those inanimate objects with past atrocities when the context is entirely different is assinine.

As for being immature and uniformed - think what you will. Let me just ask you this - how many of the camps have you actually been to?

Iron Crosses, Swasticas, SS lighting bolts, SS skull and crossbones....these things go above and beyond your typical object that may be offensive to some.

In context, I agree. Why haven't there been any posts decrying Wal-Mart selling West Coast Choppers merchandise which so clearly feature an Iron Cross? Why no outcry when a gymnast performs an iron cross in the olympics? Why not boycott Kiss for using what is essentially the SS runes in their logo? Quite simply - context. If that same design was on a black flag the normal assumption would be "pirate" not "Nazi".

The fact is that these "nazi" symbols existed long before Hitler was even born and that even though the symbols were in most cases benign or even positive they are now forever taboo because a few idiots used them as well.

Re-claiming the symbols as benign designs is not trivializing the suffering and death of those innocents.

It would be nice if this were more widespread - remember the atrocities and pay respects, but isolate the symbols. Sadly, I don't see it happening.

This logo was adopted post-WWII, and no one can reasonably argue that it references, directly or indirectly, the mass purges carried out by Stalin. The Red Star is in a completely different context.

My theory behind this uproar is that the evils of Nazism have been drilled into everyone's heads over the years through various forms of media, at the expense of exposure to evils of an equal or greater magnitude.

Stalin was responsible for 3 times as many deaths under Communism as Hitler was under Fascism. Yet few people express as much outrage towards Communism or Stalinism as they do towards Fascism and Nazism. Not that numbers are the whole picture, mind you. Both were evil, it's just that Nazism is over-exposed, relative to Stalinism.

Pretty cool looking shirt. If I had saw it before reading this thread I probably would of bought it.

It looks the same, but its a different skull and crossbones. Do you get offended by every skull and crossbones?

I do think it is peculiar that of all of the possible combinations and designs for a skull and crossbones design that they just so happened to choose and market one that was used by a Nazi unit. Granted it seems unlikely that it would have been intentional, however after seeing the obviously potential issue and making statements that they will take care of it and failed to take care of it (lying to the public and their customers?) then, yeah this is an issue.

If they wanted to have some 'cool' and 'hip' skull designs, there are plenty of ways to do so within reason instead of using a symbol that millions of people around the globe associate with hate and intolerance. It really gets down to stupidity more than anything else.

As far as I am concerned, if there is still a large and significant portion of society that would be offended by the monetary gains of a company making use of Nazi paraphernalia, then yeah I suppose I would have to agree with that population.

That's nothing. I was at some skate shop or something a year or two ago and saw an exact image of this on a Quicksilver keychain. The only thing they'd done different is to replace the swastika with the Quicksilver logo. Other than that is was a complete accurate representation. Truly disgusting.

Nazis don't have anything to do with it. It's a US Navy building with a practical geometrical layout. I would love to hear how the hate mongers would propose accounting for the $600 000.

What would they take away from the troops? Or would they prefer
it to come from education or food programs? AIDS research? Foreign aid?

Oh no, nothing like that, they would retort... just raise taxes or increase the debt. It's only $600 000 after all for something ever so important.
