No it doesn't. It says "blue light" HD DVD players. ie. Blue-laser HD DVD. If you weren't aware, both HD DVD and Blu-ray use blue-laser.
Just to add:

They mention that blue light HD DVDs can be made on the same stamping lines as regular DVDs. This is only true for HD DVD, not Blu-ray.

ie. It's ***confirmed***, this is referring specifically to HD DVD, and not Blu-ray.

OHNOES! That evil Wal-Mart empire is going to be bringing us affordable HD-DVDs soon and by extension help push down the rediculously over-priced Blu-Ray players. Where are the Wal-Mart haters to rail against this egregious plan?

You may be right about the $150.

However, that still suggests to me that Xmas 2007 will see Wal-Mart stocking HD DVD players for $199-249.

whatever the link said ...Eug Wanker is right about his 2nd point.

HD-DVD's can be manufactured in the same lines that manufacture current DVD's. No new manufacturing equipment is needed.

Blu-Ray discs can't. They need their own manufacturing lines with their own seperate equipment.

Here, in the non-coastal areas, "Great Wall" is always the second name taken by Chinese restaurant owners. The first, of course, is still "Oriental Restaurant"

I don't read Chinese, but from what I gather, Fu Yuan Electronics Corp is working with TDK, Wal-Mart, and Great Wall to manufacture $50 blue-laser HD DVD drives for HD DVD players, ultimately for Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart is ordering 2 MILLION :Q of them, and the likely list price for the player is $299 US.

Anyone want to provide a better translation?

Fu Yuan is from Taiwan, they are getting the order, then OEM in China Great Wall (I am not sure that is the actual name, since I am translating). China Great Wall will buy 50M into Fu Yuan. Fu Yuan is putting out more stocks.

Those numbers are a slanted at the moment. AVS forums got a group of people together and buy maybe 200 hd-dvds on one day, and with current sales numbers, that small number of purchases makes a huge temporary swing. But you look at the Amazon sales figures that were skewed, almost all of the purchases were *pre-orders*, so these are sales that (1) will not occur for months, (2) will reduce sales numbers later in the year, and (3) can still be canceled at any time. The PS3 forums are planning retaliation this Saturday placing a lot of pre-orders of blu-ray movies among many PS3 owners.

This is one of the lamest things I've ever heard. What a bunch of wankers.

I found the article on engadget. link

they address the same translation problem, exactly the one we argued. it is blue ray, not blue light.

Is he correct about the article saying that the hd dvds can be mad on the same stampling lines as regular dvds? If he is, then you're wrong about which players they're referring to.

I wonder if any of these chinese companies are paying the royalties to manufacture these hd-dvd players? I remember reading Toshiba going after a few chinese companies because they weren't paying the royalties to manufacture dvd players, in thus were able to produce them at such cheap prices.

HD-DVD can be made on the same DVD line (with some upgrades). I am from Taiwan, I can read Mandarin Chinese in traditional form...

Looks like the demise of HD DVD was premature indeed.

I'm no fan of Wal-Mart, and don't shop there, and wouldn't touch this $299 special with a ten foot pole, but this will increase adoption of HD DVD significantly.

Lol, translation doesn't really work all that well. Especially if we are talking about Chinese. In the context of the article the words ?? is actually short for Blue Laser. They didn't print the words LASER since it was understood. Blue-Ray is a trade mark. The technology is Blue LASER.

Fu-Yuan is responsible for the royalties.

That's why I was saying that it doesn't make sense to argue about blu-ray and blue-laser/light. Instead, if you can confirm that the article says that the hd-dvds in question can be made on the same line as regular dvds, that means they aren't talking about blu-ray.

I thought HD-DVD currently used a red laser, but a higher disc spin speed to compensate for the slower transfer rate? That's what I transcribed in HD-DVD versus Bluray article months upon months ago anyways. Very curious.

Nope. They both use blue lasers.
