HD-DVD's can be manufactured in the same lines that manufacture current DVD's. No new manufacturing equipment is needed.

Blu-Ray discs can't. They need their own manufacturing lines with their own seperate equipment.

Fu Yuan is from Taiwan, they are getting the order, then OEM in China Great Wall (I am not sure that is the actual name, since I am translating). China Great Wall will buy 50M into Fu Yuan. Fu Yuan is putting out more stocks.

I wonder if any of these chinese companies are paying the royalties to manufacture these hd-dvd players? I remember reading Toshiba going after a few chinese companies because they weren't paying the royalties to manufacture dvd players, in thus were able to produce them at such cheap prices.

HD-DVD can be made on the same DVD line (with some upgrades). I am from Taiwan, I can read Mandarin Chinese in traditional form...

Looks like the demise of HD DVD was premature indeed.

I'm no fan of Wal-Mart, and don't shop there, and wouldn't touch this $299 special with a ten foot pole, but this will increase adoption of HD DVD significantly.

Lol, translation doesn't really work all that well. Especially if we are talking about Chinese. In the context of the article the words ?? is actually short for Blue Laser. They didn't print the words LASER since it was understood. Blue-Ray is a trade mark. The technology is Blue LASER.

That's why I was saying that it doesn't make sense to argue about blu-ray and blue-laser/light. Instead, if you can confirm that the article says that the hd-dvds in question can be made on the same line as regular dvds, that means they aren't talking about blu-ray.

I thought HD-DVD currently used a red laser, but a higher disc spin speed to compensate for the slower transfer rate? That's what I transcribed in HD-DVD versus Bluray article months upon months ago anyways. Very curious.
