Wait for 7900?

So, I just sold my 7800GT and have saved roughly $500. I am very tempted to buy a x1900xt right now, but with 7900's coming out in early March, I'm not sure if I should wait. With people tossing around prices like $500 for the 7900GTX, I cannot decide what to do. Get a x1900xt or maybe xtx from Monarch, or wait and see whats up with the 7900's?

My situation is similar...I'm selling my 7800Gt on Ebay and have saved some money for a new graphic card...my suggestion, wait till early March.
Whatever happens, I'll buy a nvidia card... SLI and a nvidia nforce4 board, ATI does not "match" here...hehe!

Depends on how long you want to wait. Rumor is that March 9th we'll see the 7900 series emerge but if rumor is off than it could be a while longer. No one really knows at this point. If you can go without using your computer for awhile than wait. If you don't want to wait the 2+ weeks to find out which will be faster than buy the X1900XT.

Might as well wait. It's only about 2-3 weeks, at least according to the rumors.

Sell your GT and buy a X1900 XT/XTX.
If you end up wanting the 7900 GTX, sell the XT/XTX.

This way you'll lose less money if any at all, because lets face it, if you wait till the 7900 GTX is actually released, the 7800 GT value will have depreciated greatly.
As newer and better components will be avilable for the same price.
Sell now and you still get near enough your moneys worth.

I've already sold the GT so that's not a problem. But I WILL lose money if I buy the x1900xt and then sell it, because it will be tougher to get as much as I paid for with the 7900s out.

waiting is useless. Just get the ATI card for now, as people have gotten them for sub 500 dollars. If the 7900 Benchies are lower than the x1900 ones or if they are horribly overpriced, then the prices of ati cards will rise because of increased demand.

But what are you using in the mean time?

EDIT: Also, HacP has a very good point.

You lose nothing by waiting, assuming you have a card that runs games well in the meantime. The longer you wait the cheaper the X1900XT gets and the more we know about the 7900 series.

I'd just be using the DFI Lanparty's onboard graphics lol. I'm gonna think about it, but I'll probably just get a x1900xt.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the Ultra-D has no onboard graphics. You'll either have to buy a cheap video card to tide you over or wait it out.

My step-up runs out March 20th *I think*. If G71 comes out before my step-up ends, I am definately going to get the G71 even if it is slightly slower than X1900XTX.

If Nvidia paper launches and i miss my step-up, i will be extremely pissed and buy an X1900XTX immediately.

Why? 7800GT SLI setup is just as fast or faster than X1900XTX.

On another note, even if 7900 cards are faster, it's hard to image that they'll play games at much higher settings than what X1900XT can handle. For those with 7800GTs, I see little reason to drop $500 on these refresh cards. I could only see myself spending $500 on DX10 G80/R600 cards in the fall. But I guess the argument can be made that you can sell 7900/x1900 series and buy those cards. In that case, it never makes sense to wait since the loses from every 6 month upgrade can be considered "rents" for playing games.

Here's why I am going to upgrade to 7900GTX:

With my step-up, I will get $311 for my GT CO. Then I plan to sell my other GT with the NV5 Silencer for about ~$250.

That's almost a free upgrade.

Plus, I'll always ahve the option of getting another one if need be.

If Nvidia screwes me and I miss my step-up, I'm going to buy an X1900XTX just to spite Nvidia for screwing me over. Nto to mention, I'll be back to single card solution, better IQ, yada yada.

I'm going to San Diego State University in the fall and I really cant afford it. I'll be attending school on loans and financial aid. In other words, I'll be broke. Broke as a joke. So, whatever upgrade I do now is going to ahve to last me until Christmas, maybe longer.

I doubt that you will get 250 for you 7800GT as new ones come 256AR and also, if Nvidia prices the G71 very high, then your basically screwed as you have to overpay for it. Your best bet would be to stick with SLI GT, as that performance should be equal to the XTX, and alot of times better

I have the same question. Also, if 7900GT is released at cebit, will the initial cost will be $399 and not the $300 the 7800GT is priced at currently? Taking everything into account, I'll most likely end up waiting until X1900XL is released as well. I went to hkepc and they said X1900XL will be a lower clocked XT available only in a 256meg version. it also seems as if a X1800GTO will be released to compete with the 7600GT and that it will be made from leftover X1800 cores. Here's a picture:

I hope it's not a repost. Also mentioned is the 80nm process ati has already achieved.

Well I do have the NV5 Silencer on it. That will give it a little more resale value. Still, even if I only get say $230 and the 7900GTX is introduced with an MSRP of $649, that''s still only about $110 for an equal, if not better setup through a single card.

I dont know, i guess I'll have to weigh my options when it is released... *sigh*

Hmm that's gotta be very out of date. Aside from the X1900XT already at $500, the X1900XL can't be more than $400 if it hopes to sell at all given what it will compete against (7900GT most likely and that should be around $400 or less as well).

Also they are very outdated on the NVidia offerings - missing are 7800GS and... 6800GS? off the top of my head.

Dude get the xtx from monarch. I was like you wondering if I should go ati or wait till g71. I had a 7800gt and stepped up to the gtx512 for $250. I never even opened it
and sold it on ebay for $800. Was thinking about waiting but decided to try ati. Heard alot of good things like better IQ and AA+HDR, running faster with aa+af on.
And I dont regret it one bit. So I got the HIS xtx for $540 AR. My first ATI after being with nvidia for the last few years. Plus G80 and r600 are coming up so you'll
most likely be upgrading again anyway.
