Talos and Vulkan Q & A

Q: What is this Vulkan, anyway?

A: Vulkan is a great new graphics programming interface that has much less overhead compared to previous APIs like Direct3D 9, 11 or OpenGL.

Q: Oh, so it's like Direct3D 12?

A: Quite like it, but portable, and not restricted to Windows 10 OS.

Q: I see. Like Apple Metal?

A: That too. But again, portable, and not restricted to iOS and OS X.

Q: So, it's like Mantle then?

A: Right again. But portable, not restricted to just one GPU vendor. And Mantle is pretty much gone. It served its purpose to get things started and I think that a lot of Mantle is now incorporated into Vulkan.

So AMD without a driver is faster than Nvidia in the single Vulkan test when they have drivers out!!

WTF,what happens when AMD has a driver out?? This is a serious performance problem for Nvidia! o_O

Looks like AMD already has problem.

But AMD has no driver for Vulkan and Nvidia with a driver is getting beaten?? Plus why do I care about the 0.1% of Linux gamers??

So,it seems weird that AMD having no driver for Vulkan under Windows is doing better than Nvidia??

Seems rather an issue, since when AMD gets their driver out the difference will be bigger!!

Did you link the wrong article?
I get it, he wants to show that a Titan X runs at 96 fps on Vulkan/Linux, which is faster than the 92 fps from a 980Ti on DX11/Windows.
But Phoronix is only running 2xAA and I don't know what the "MAX 3D RENDERING MPIX" setting is supposed to tell me.

Some of us would actually love to be able to use Linux instead of Windows. I'm looking forward to the possibility. But I'm not stressing aver it.

That's the maximum resolution. If it's lower than your set resolution it will upscale. Just set it to unlimited.

AMD has a Vulkan driver for Windows.

I was asking because the Phoronix test had that set at 1680*1050, which would explain the performance of that Titan X under Linux.

Neil Trevett is Khronos President and Nvidia Vice President Developer Ecosystem.

Khronos Slide

One at Khronos and other at Nvidia. So how can we trust Khronos for Vulkan?

Everything goes through a committee AFAIK. It's not like his position could FUBAR things. Look at what AMD has been able to accomplish getting them to take on Mantle as Vulkan's basis.

It does seem kind of ironic as NVidia has always leaned towards proprietary things. Makes me wonder if he'll abuse his power to hold up advancements that favor AMD or somewhat hamper NVidia....Guess time will tell in the end how it plays out.

Seems like you are assuming he has the power to do that any more than any other committee member because of his title. I haven't noticed any evidence of that happening so far.

It's just the closed source nature of NVidia that makes me somewhat skeptical as far as that goes.

AMD likes the industry standard, open source way of life....Probably plays a part in their current financial situation.

Guess time will tell in the end how it plays out.

It will be quite interdasting to see how this impacts SteamOS. I'd really like that to be more viable than it is

This is far fetched conspiracy garbage. Do we want open standards or not? Open standards are run by committee. Open standards in the graphics world will have Nvidia.

It's not really far fetched when you look at past history. NVidia seems to prefer closed source things. There really isn't much to debate in the end.

I doubt I'm the only one who feels like it's kind of ironic in the end.

Sure NVidia will participate in open source things while they keep the proprietary things rolling along.

Time will tell in the end how things pan out for both AMD and NVidia. No real need to argue about what's going to happen in the future....Yet.
