Public Service Announcement:

If you don't like the product at the price that it sells for, for whatever reason, don't buy it.

If you like the product at the price that it sells for, and you have a need for it, buy it.

It serves no purpose to go on and on about how it compares to last gen price/perf wise or whatever. Or to compare it with other products that won't release anytime soon in an attempt to characterize something as midrange or high end or whatever, when those categories are somewhat arbitrary. You can kvetch all you want, but the companies do not listen. They only care about how you vote with your wallet.

So vote with your wallet. Case closed.

(mutters something about First World Problems...)

Too much logic for just one post, ban him

Amen! I've been saying this since January. And I just placed my order for my shiny new Sapphire HD 7970 :D

Going to see if I can tolerate stock cooler, then mess around with after market. I can't wait :D!

The entire FXAA side is blurred by depth of field to hide its poorer image quality. This is typical marketing deceit that most discerning customers would catch. Fanboys, however, do not.

What about MSAA side? Is it blurred by depth of field also?

You realize that DoF/Bokeh is a huge part of Samaritan demo, and that there is no a single scene without it?

no give him a freaking medal for

DONT COMPARE HARDWARE WITH LAST GEN because it hurts my feelings,

AND DON'T TALK IF YOU DIDN'T BUY

Move the slider left or right and you can see the entire scene with FXAA or MSAA. FXAA does blur noticeably though.
Right, and how many people take the time to move the slider? That was my point. They highlight the improvement of anti-aliasing in high contrast areas, (the split is over the torch in the backlight), but then hide all the negatives. As I said, pure marketing. When you move the slider, you can already see how blurred the character's shirt becomes, the loss of detail in the jacket, the lack of luminescence from the torch (and how dull it becomes). These effects become more pronounced in the distance, which in this scene there is none, conveniently, as it's hidden by the DoF.

Close competition is great for everyone, but in here, if we are being honest, fans of one company are just hoping to rub it in the face of fans of the other. That's what most of this banter really is. And, its obviously entertaining because, well here we are.
I do hope that gk104 does a lot of things. And one of them is to get a few folks around here to shut it.
I guess I'll know soon enough if I get my wish. :p

Close comp is the best for the market. Nothing will stop the banter, though.

Yeah if this is nvidia's mid range and it's trading blows with the 7970 as rumored AMD is in trouble. That's the kind of blow that could send amd running out of the discrete market.

It's being reported as GTX 680. That's not the midrange SKU. Just because they planned something bigger doesn't mean they can pull it off. AMD apparently planned on a bigger chip too at way higher clocks. We haven't seen anything about that either.

BF3 is a game where the GTX 580 is almost as fast as a 7970 stock, barely any difference, in fact, you really need to overclock the 7970 a LOT to make the difference even noticeably faster. BF3 is the weak point for AMD cards.

So if it is just 10% faster than 7970 stock in BF3, chances are it is just 15-25% faster than a stock GTX 580 across the board and this means that it will fall somewhere btw a 7950 and 7970 for most games.

This however is assuming the fact that the above is true and it is just 10% faster than 7970 stock in BF3.

In most games 10% lead would do, but not in a game where nvidia anyway has a 20-30% lead for the same generation competitors'.

If its near 7970 performance across games, its going to come down to price and overclock ability.

I hope its that good tho, i'm expecting around gtx580 performance at much reduced power use, if its 15-20% faster, thats awesome.

the gtx 680 architecture is different from the gtx 580. You can't make some flawed comparison like that. The 7970 may be the gtx 680's weakest game ? And the only reason it's mentioned is because it's currently the most popular PC game. We will know more when sites test both cards in dx10 /11 games.

So we should all expect the 680 to be around 650 dollars? Wonderful

Well, if it's faster than the 7970, that would only make sense. Personally I don't really expect Nvidia to play the lower price / sell by volume card. Especially considering the 28nm process is far from being mature and the yields are problematic. Trying to sell by volume then would be a very risky business.

I think there might be a few adjustments to AMD pricing if GK104 is slightly better value, but I don't expect an all out pricing war that would significantly lower the prices overall (in my opinion of course).

I remember seeing these pre-released tactics somewhere before.

GTX 680 is 10% faster than 7970 at BF3. And Bulldozer really ran Dirt 3 great.

It's a gtx 670 ti. Look at pics above. It was rumored to be a gtx 660 ti at one point but since the 7970 fell flat on its face performance wise nvidia rebadged the 660 to a 670 ti to justify higher prices. Basically mid range performance for top tier prices thus far.

Not for anything, but it "appears" that the engraved GTX670Ti might be photoshopped.
The "6" looks almost like a 5 that had it's bottom loop closed, and the 7 isn't aligned with the rest of the numbers.
IMHO, more FUD.

lol you just won't let go of your baseless drivel dude, I feel bad that you have such confidence yet have no clue what you're talking about. Guess if you keep repeating the same lines over and over you'll believe yourself?

You're doing a good job though, the united front is impressive. GO NV GO.

Add another set of cards he can't afford to the list :'( He can always get some GTX 580s on the cheap, I guess.

Fact: 7970 is around 5% faster than a gtx 580 at 1920X1200
Fact: 7970 is a 50% increase in msrp and most are priced even worse at nearly $600
Fact: 7970 is the highest msrp since the gtx 280 debacle which nvidia offered rebate checks because it was priced so badly. I'd say even a worse value than the $800 8800gtx. At least the 8800 was a beast in its time. The 7970 is a minor improvement over a 15 month old 40nm product.

Woof.

Fact #1: Que? You only going on BF3 numbers again? That fact is definitely, not a fact.
Fact #2: I just bought a Sapphire Ref for $560, in a laundry list of cards with only one reaching $600 (Giga Windforce 3) another fact that is not a fact.
Fact #3: 8800 Ultra and GTX 280 all had +$600 MSRPs. Fact #3 is again, not a fact.

Wow guy, 0 for 3. Troll much?
