Gizmo between router and cable modem:

Not using it: Download 4700 Upload 350

Using the line: Download 3800 Upload 200

Acceptable for me, and the sound quality is good, according to those I've talked to.

Inguyen, you should log into the gizmo (192.168.251.1) and play with the rate limits under the LAN settings. There is a link earlier in this thread to a post from a sunrockets guy on dslreports that explains how to optimally set it. but basically if you use dynamic rate limits, they only kick in when you're on the phone, and you should enter in at least 90 kbs less than your actual uplaod speed. I have 180 on mine just to be safe (uploads for me range from about 300-350).

yep, found that out after I posted. but haven't had a chance to test it out

Got in on this thanks

Question #1
I have a cable modem, a dlink router and from there 2 computers (no laptops)
Will I have to worry about wep settings?

Question #2
Did they contact your phone company or should I do that
(opted to try to keep my phone number)

Thanks for another Great Hot Deal from Anandtech 😛

Answer #1: WEP is a security setting for wireless. If your router has wireless (turned on) -- then yes, you need to worry about it. If not, no.
Answer #2: If you opted to keep your number at the beginning of your sign-up, they should have emailed you an authorization form. Also (i can't remember if it was in the email, or in the FAQ) they say to let _them_ take care of the cancellation. For you to do it seperately will mess up the sequence of events (the # transfer).

I agree: Thanks for another hot deal!

The authorization to transfer your POTS number is available on the SunRocket website. Here is part of an email I received from member services: "Go to our website at www.sunrocket.com , select our services, and select transfer number. You will then be able to download LOA needed to tranfer your old number to SunRocket."

Day 8

Making lots of long distance calls. .Incoming definitely working - call waiting kicked in!

Voice Messages left going to email. New phones working like a charm.

Still to come:

land line transfer to sunrocket and the issues thereof. but in the meantime - this works well!

What's the login and password for the gizmo?

got my gizmo today on day 10 (shipped accross the nation)

Plugged it in -- and it magically works. Inbound and outbound, both numbers. (Maybe it takes a while... I tested them over an hour after I plugged it in)

Voice quality is acceptable, but I do notice a slight buzz on my wired phone. Not enough to be irritating, but enough to notice. It may be the location -- since I have the gizmo near a lot of other electronics. Called a friend and he said quality was good, but he could here a buzz also. Also, my own voice seems louder than normal in my ear-piece.

The web interface is not accessible from the wan side -- an fyi for those that put it behind their router. It seems odd to me that the firmware is flashable by sunrocket (from the wan side), but the web interface is not. It could be they have a non-standard port on the wan side.... I'll scan it later and see.

I'm undecided about the phones. They're still in the sealed box... I don't really need 2 phones, so I may ebay them or give as a gift.

edit: Does anyone else find this scarily simple? What keeps someone from cloning another sunrocket gizmo's network address and intercepting someones calls?
I'm too chicken to try it.

I was wondering about how SR accesses the gizmo too so I asked one of their techs the other day. He said they expected alot of ppl to put them behind routers, so they use port 80 (http) for updates. They also use port 5560 (UDP). hmm... wonder if I can connect by port forwarding 5560...

Interesting concept of cloning a gizmo's MAC... The only problem is that it may use the IP the gizmo connects from during initial hookup. So you would have to know the other gizmo's MAC and make sure it is disconnected when you connect. (not communicating with SR) - That actually is "scarily simple"... :Q

One thing I recommend for everyone using VOIP is a UPS. It will give you phone service during a power outage...bet you never thought of that 😀

Over at CrapUSA (link to UPS) they have the Belkin Universal UPS 500VA
Mfg Part #: F6C500-UNV Product Number: 311655
for $9.95 after IR=$5(wow!) & $65 MIR.

I'll bet this would run your cable modem + router + Gizmo for about half-a-day. 😀😀😀

It's up to you as to whether or not you need a phone 24x7.

Haha, I've had one for my router/cable modem for a while 🙂 Just to suffice for the blips of power outages. I am putting the modem and gizmo on it now, as soon as I figure out a good way to place everything so I can have VOIP through out the house.

Very good recommendation for a great price! 😛

I've got mine hooked up to a APC 500 UPS I bought years ago... AT-deal of course.

JBY&M, I UPS everything (within reason, of course).
CompUSA was out of the UPS advertised in the paper for $10AR & they offered a comparable Belkin 500VA for $10+tax OTD! I took it.

Maybe I'll have to promote CrapUSA to PoopUSA 😀😀😀 (Or CacaUSA)

Update 16 days (11 buisness days) after receiving gizmo:

After failing to include the free phones with the gizmo, and mutiple (at least 3) calls to customer service beginning on the day I received the gizmo, the free phones arrived today (via UPS Next Day Air).

No incoming calls yet. Was contacted in the first week after receiving gizmo to verify my address because their vendor's database did not have my address (it's a 911 problem, which also prevents incoming calls from working). Today, told that my address cannot be found. Advised to call 911 and ask what they have my address as. Informed Sunrocket that my current phone company is Vonage, which was able to activate 911 with my address, and asked if they use the same 911 service. Was told that they will get back to the vendor and there must be something wrong.

Sent fax authorizing transfer of my number on 2/2. Contacted customer service on 2/4 and 2/9, was told that the fax does not show up in the system. Director of provisioning informed me on 2/10 that I should refax. 2/11 received voice mail asking for the fax number I used to send the fax, and told that they can retreive my fax with that. Left this information on VM on 2/11. Still no word.

Give this, the voice quality is appreciably better than what I experienced with Vonage. I just wish that I could accept calls. I am still (perhaps unrationally) very happy with SunRocket and their customer service (although, with the phone issue I began to wonder whether these tickets actually do anything, since I had to call in 3 or 4 times before the phones actually got sent). Also, they do seem to care about you. On Friday, I got a call about my download speeds being affected, and when the person found out my incoming calls weren't activated yet, he sounded genuinely concerned. I have also been in contact with the director of provisioning (about the incoming calls and number transfer) and he responds quickly to my emails and seems to be on top of things.

The only odd thing to me is that it seems like everyone else's customer service experience has been much more expedient (ie people getting phones overnighted to them on the first call; no reports of missing faxes when sending in the transfer authorization). Although it speaks well for the company that I seem to be in the minority, I hate to be the unlucky one as well. Such is life. And I guess they're lucky that these things are happening to an understanding customer.

I just got high speed and have been following this thread with interest. It appears that the thing to do is place the Gizmo behind the router due to speed loss that occurs when it is in front of the router. However, what features, if any, are lost in this configuration?

Sorry if this has been detailed already, I haven't read every post! Thanks.
