I spoke to Staples again and they said they're still having problems with the item number letter thing. On a brighter note, looks like my order is ok now.

stupid question fro you techies out there.......I have been looking for a good scanner for a while, and this looks like a good deal...however, while checking out product specs, I ran into some confusing stuff maybe someone can enlighten for me....

I have a AGFA 1212u....I paid ~80$ maybe 2 years ago - it's not even carried anymore.....it's 36bit, resoution 1200x600....
.this Visioneer is 42 bit, 1200x600
but when I was looking at pricegrabber tech specs, the agfa says max Max Scan Resolution: 9600 x 9600
while for tghe visioneer it says Max Scan Resolution: 2400 x 2400 pricegrabber also lists External Scan Depth: 16.7 Million Colors (24-bit) for the visioneer.....

so from that, unless I'm reading it wrong, says that the resoluation is better on my old scanner which isn't even sold anymore and no one carries????? I'm really confused...if anyone could help, it'd be greatly appreciated.....

thanks

hcarlson, they don't deliver on Saturday, only Mon - Fri. They also want someone to be there to accept delivery. If no ones there you'll need to fill out a driver release form so they can leave it at your home.

I always wondered about that release form myself. On the form it says Staples isn't responsible if something happens after they leave the item. Who's to say the driver won't just keep the item and claim he left it...

We are sorry , but the products that you ordered are not available. We may carry a number of similar products that you may wish to substitute. Please contact a Staples.com representative at 1-800-3STAPLE.

i ordered 1/31 at 3:00pm PST

The large numbers are enhanced software resolution. The first, smaller numbers is the amount the hardware is capable of. That's the important numbers, the color being the smallest, the black and white the largest. So, 600x1200 is the hardware resolution, 600 color, 1200 B/W. Only go by the hardware resolutions listed, the software figures are almost meaningless.

FWIW, I don't have AmEx and didn't want to bother with the PM stuff, so I tied the scanner in with the TurboTax/Quicken/Norton/Etc. rebates deal. When all is said and done it should be $25 out of pocket after a $30 off $150 coupon and all the associated rebates (could be $5 but I don't have an old copy of NortonAV to get the $20 upgrade rebate) for the scanner and all the software. Considering I was going to by TurboTax for $20 anyway, seemed like a pretty good way to go.

I think the driver's employers would become just a little suspicious of all the claims from the driver's route. That's why.

dongky, you didn't say where you live. Staples ships from different warehouses and yours may have run out of stock. I'd give them a call and find out what's goiing on.

btw...I'm in So Cal and mines scheduled to be delivered Monday. I ordered about 11:00 pm PST.

Good point Sesopedalian

i ordered mine right after it was posted...however, since most companies don't use FIFO (first in first out), and my order status STILL says processing, i doubt i'll get mine either. i really wished these POS (piece of *hit) companies at LEAST processed orders in the order they were received, unlike staples and *hitty tigerdirect

My scanner just showed me up (and woke me up :disgust: it's only 11am!!)

it comes with both USB and paralell cables! that's what suprised me the most when opening the box!

XP detects it great, and I'll install Photoshop right away to get some stuff scanned :)

edit: just got PH6 installed, works great (after I Unlocked the scanner ) here's the only thing I've scanned so far rose.jpg

Does anyone know if there is a downloadable "test page" that can be used to scan and determine (visual quality) differences between scanners? I have a bunch of scanners, and it would be nice to find out which one does the best job.

WARNING!!!!WARNING!!!!WARNING!!!

just got back from an online staples rep. our conversation went like this :

Jason Y.: Unfortunately, you will not be able to use the coupon with the rebate.

jj: what will happen if I placed the order with the coupon and the order syas it's processed successfully. at what point will I know that my rebate will be declined? thanks.

Jason Y.: When you submit your rebate, it will go to our rebate center and they will notify you if the rebate has been rejected. They will send you a postcard if it has been rejected.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO CHECK WITH A REP BEFORE MAKING A PURCHASE DECISION.

THANKS.

I think the better warning is to don't pay attention to the Staples CSRs. I get rebates all the time from Staples on purchases using coupons, even when the rebate exceeds the discounted price.

Don't sweat it. The rep was wrong

Anyone else want to elaborate on this?
I can't afford to get screwed out of 70 dollars.
I am thinking about cancelling my order.

I'm not sure they can do this. When you checkout you agree to pay the amount indicated, knowing that there is a $70 rebate. Now if the terms of the rebate say something to the affect of "not valid with any other offers, coupons, etc." then they may have us all screwed.

Anyone else check on this yet??
Mine is scheduled for delivery on 2/4/02, but I don't want to start using it only to find out in 6-12 weeks that my rebate has been denied due to $20 coupon.

Junior, don't worry. These great deals come out, and all of the rebate newbies start chiming in "oh, I used a coupon, they're not going to give me my rebate!". Well I can assure you from MANY past rebates that this is not a problem. You can use your coupon, and you will get your rebate.

When I checked out and processed my order my final page indicated my price after coupon & taxes. There was also (and this is important) a link to the $70 rebate form on my "FINAL" order page.

I'd say that's pretty misleading if they would'n't accept the rebate.

now i'm mad, now i'm happy...gee i'm glad it's not in stock in my area and my order got cancelled.
just want to inform you guys that they screwed my rebate once. i think it's on the soundblaster live mp3+5.1 deal.
i used the coupon from my e-mail, i then got an e-mail from the rebate dept. stating that i already used a coupon that's
why they rejected my rebate. the bad thing is that i couldn't return the sound card because i bought it a long time ago.

now i believe that "suck is staples! quote by ?

My first question is, does anybody out there have this scanner working on a Linux box (using SANE, I assume...)?

If nobody does, answers to the following questions would help me out greatly...

1. Does anybody know if this scanner uses the E3 chipset?

2. If you don't know, but have the drivers installed on your Windows 9x box, could you check to see if the files E1.ini and Lut.plg are in your C:\Windows\ directory?

Staples could change its policies at any time I guess, but I NEVER order anything at Staples without a coupon and every order I place includes rebates -- that is how you get good deals here and from my order history -- I have 11 orders, 11 rebates and 11 checks adn this will hopefully by # 12. I ordered this one and intend to PM with my AmexCard, get the rbate, use the coupon, make money and ... What the heck did I need a scanner for any way ..........:D
