That was interesting so i searched on it. Apparently the video is just a clip from a longer national geographic one. Also, the dogpile defense is supposed to be true.

Of course its true. You think I would make it up?? I actually watch alot of Discovery, History etc etc Channels and am fairly smart, contrary to what most of my posts on ATOT would indicate.... :p

The dogpile works becuase the heat generated can be upwards of 150 degrees. This is hot enough to kill the hornet, but the bees have evolved to where they can tolerate this extreme heat for short durations.

what makes that vid freak me out is I had a hornet land 2 inches from my face last night when I was laying in bed! For some reason he wasn't flying away so I grabbed an empty cup and trapped him... he didnt like it and started running laps around the parameter of the cup.. I got him onto a book still under the cup and threw him outside... freaked me out then and makes it even worse now cause I have no idea where he came from!! :Q

you mean she? ;)

the only male bees are the drones, and their only job is to mate, and they die.

What a satisfying life that would be.......

If only marriage were like that... hehe. So virtualgames are hornets the same as bees cause thats what landed 2" from my face not a bee...

That was amazing.
They said 30 hornets killed 30,000 bees in 3 hrs.
Thats:
1000 bees per hornet;
333 bees per hour per hornet;
5.5 bees per minute per hornet;

My brother told me those Hornets are 2 inches long, with a wing span of 3 inches. They are native to Japan. But Japan didn't have any honey bees, so they brought some European Honey Bees over. Because they never evolved together, the Bee has no natural defenses against the Hornet.

one hell of a kill to death ratio

In Japan's mountain villages, the hornets are valued as part of the basic diet. They are eaten deep fried, or even as hornet sashimi.
Looks like they found a natural predator. :laugh:

wow, the honey bees cluster around the hornet and rais the temperature to just one dergee above what thehornet can survive, and just three degrees below whatr the bees themselves can survive. amazing
