i move to ban all forms of electronic interactive entertainment because they offer no benefit to society other than the economic benefit to the manufacturers. they don't incite any kind of intellectual development, they hinder real social relationships, and most practically they waste time and money.

I dunno man. My twitch reflexes are super-fast thanks to video games, and if I was ever called away to war there would be no worry about getting grossed out or freezing up because I'm totally unaffected by violence!

There was a study done, that kids who play around 1 hour of video games/day (IIRC), are actually more socially active. I'll try to find it, but it was on the news, I belive, within the past year.

In my personal experience (regarding this issue), I'd say you'll be more socially active. My friends and I get togather to play video games (Halo, TS2, etc.) frequently. It's a good time. I usually only play video games with my friends.

There is also a study, that young people who play video games will be better drivers becuase they have a quicker reaction time. (though this doesn't mean they'll be a safer driver).

Video games are fun. They're a good break from school/running every day.

My children will play games a bit, but not that much. They make kids fat, stupid, and lazy. I am not going to watch a kid who should be outside on abike spending 13 hours in front of the tv on a summer day. Just won't happen.

I have done some stupid things outside, when I could have been nice and safe near my computer.

You're probably the better for it :) Truly children sitting inside playing video games instead of out playing sports are just rotting their brains. I've got a friend with a 6 year old who's got a nice healthy bit of cellulite on his belly - all he does is play bloody video games.

that sounds fine but really, what video games help build problem solving skills? madden? halo? splinter cell? give me a break - if i were your mom, then maybe that excuse might work with me. but i know games, and i've used the old "problem solving" excuse w/ my parents. even the more role based games that actually require problem solving don't help DEVELOP them, they basically test them. if your skills are bad before the game, you'll just suck at it. i'm willing to bet that the game itself isn't helping to develop any problem solving skills

however, even if they did "help" i'd argue in the kind of development they provide. there is a very clear paradigm in problem solving type games, and it's fairly constant from game to game. the problem is that many of the programmers think alike, so the problems are all very similar. sometimes when i'm presented w/ such a "problem" in a game, just by thinking about how the programmer might design a particular level or "test" i can get through it pretty easily.

They are called GAMES for a reason.

Let's ban all card games while were at it. Board games too.
Ban anything that isn't approved by a parenting committee!

first of all, i'm 21 and own and have played plenty of games, so don't expect to knock down my opinion on the basis of bias or credibility. second, board games, card games, etc. require (in most part) other people to play. this kind of play/entertainment is fine, because it engenders social interaction, develops character traits, and creates real relationships. most video games are single player, and even the multiplayer games are predominantly on-line.

Stop blaming video games for your anti-social behaviours.

I don't think they develop hand-eye coordination in the conventional sense since they don't develop any kind of physical ability (strength, speed, endurance...). I'd bet puzzles and legos do a better job at building spacial thinking, though they might not be as entertaining for kids.

i don't have any anti-social behaviour. i have a hot g/f, i go to the bars every weekend w/ my friends. i just came back from an amazing spring break trup in jamaica w/ about 25 of my friends from school. i enjoy my life. that still doesn't prohibit me from seeing the potentially harmful effects of video games.

I have no intentions of "knock down your opinion", it's your opinion, there is no right and wrong. Don't be so defensive. What does your age have to do with it? Are you stating that now you are older and see that all the time you wasted with video games makes you angry? I'm 24 and was heavy into video games AND sports. I don't have any social issues nor lack of character development. Of course, I wasn't a fat ass kid sitting in my house all day playing games and chomping on doritos.

I have a little brother who is into video games fairly heavy. Whenever I visit I see him and a whole group of his friends rocking out in their room playing games, messing around, doing whatever young teenage boys do. I don't see how hanging out with 3-5 friends daily to play games makes him anti-social or socially inept.

Card games develop character traits? Like what? Gambling and cigar smoking? Usually when you play card games, you do it with people who are friends already. Unless you are part of a bridge club or something like that. I fail to see how any menial games contribute to social and personal growth.
It's a game, which is used for entertainment. This isn't group therapy or activity therapy. It's playing a GAME.

Now is the part where I sort of make fun of you. :)
Being in university makes you think too much. You might want to set a bridle on that.
How about we get all the 8-15 year olds to go to the gym and pump iron all day. That will develop social skills and build loads of character.
