This is an understandable reaction, but not a helpful one if you are a GI. Nick Berg was murdered, plain and simple, and there will be consequences. If a rogue American soldier, out of anger and frustation, murders an Iraqi civilian or surrendering insurgent, he can, should, and probably will be prosecuted and spend a long time in the pokey. Meanwhile we will lose further credibility and achieve nothing toward winning the peace.

Civilian contractors are usually warned , sometimes they even sign waivers, that the US does not gaurantee thier safety, like reporters.

In all fairness, Nick Berg was not a civilian contractor - he went to Iraq of his own volition looking for work, which never materialized. I think his death is very sad, and I think OIF was a huge blunder, but I don't really feel the Bush administration was responsible for protecting Berg.

In all fairness then, if this is considered thier retrobution for the unlawful and despicable mistreatment of the prisoners, then we should call it squared and settled, since there is little chance there will ever be justice served on the terroists for this act. All charges dropped. If that's how they want to see it settled then let it be done. They didnt care to wait for a democratic justice system to duly punish those responsible. They took maters in their own hands and levied a death penalty on an innocent man. Let that be all they get now...... Of course the world would scream with anger over such a notion. But the terroists would crap in their baggy pants over it.

Although Inhofe could have been more judicious in his remarks, I can't say I completely disagree with him. I think the level of outrage over this whole affair has been just shy of ridiculous. This story was first reported in March. Where was the shock then? It is a big deal now ONLY because of the pictures. Nothing more.

I don't agree with with SOME of what went on- rape, inappropriate use of broom handles, or beating someone to death. OTOH, I could care less if someone is simply "humiliated".

I say good that they were humiliated. I say anything that we can do short of honestly physically injuring someone is in the playbook.

Let's think about why the outrage is just now hitting.

1) Initial reports of abuse mentioned no details. That doesn't make for good news. For all we knew, a couple of prisoners were roughed up a bit.
2) Pictures come out showing images of torture and inhumane treatment. This is completely counter to anything that resembles a compassionate and liberating force and has greatly damaged the post-war effort.
