Vicious junior hockey hit.

I don't get too charged up about it. No doubt Cormier is an asshole but, in sports, there is ALWAYS someone bigger, faster, nastier so, Cormier will get his. Cuz, everyone loves beatin on a jerk that deserves it. One day he'll be playing a team who can't win and they'll set up a play just to take him out.

For sure, some day some guy is gonna jack his ass into the boards and break him in half. He's a dirty player who of no use to hockey. I watched all those videos and in all of them, he purposely skated in front of the opponents' face and jabbed his elbow out. That's only 3 times...but I'm sure he's done it a lot more and it's never been caught on tape. What he's doing is just about as bad as what Marty Mcsorley did to Donald Brashear back in 2000, and look what that got him, the end of his career. There's no excuse for what this kid is doing and he should be banned from hockey. What a piece of shit.

with all that said, how the fvck is this guy a captain?

no kidding...... not exactly exemplary for the kid that wears the C for the Canadian junior team. go through past captains and you wouldn't see that kind of behaviour out of any of them. they have to lead by example on the ice, not do what this idiot did... wow

anyhoo i finally saw the hit. definitely bush league. should be suspended for the remainder of the junior season, but he's already property of an NHL team and that won't change. they'll protect their investment, $$ is more important to them than this.

He's property of the Devils, my team. 🙁

He's a great, great hockey player aside from the cheapshots, and one of the guys all the Devils fans were looking forward to seeing in the NHL (along with Mattias Tedenby). Definitely one of our top 2 or 3 prospects.

That said, he does have a history of this behavior, and it's always been a concern of the fanbase, but we felt that once he got here our coaching staff would be able to straighten it out.

I post on some Devils messageboards, and pretty much everyone was horrified by this hit. The other sad side of this is that the guy he hit, Tam, was passed over in the most recent draft, but had been playing well enough that he probably would have gotten a tryout with an NHL club. Now his career might be over, to say nothing of his health.

As for Patrice, I suspect that no matter what The Devils do (or don't do) he will make it to the NHL. Life isn't fair.

for the non-hockey-competent ATOTers, is there a video of this Cormier incident?

I thought this post included a Youtube of the hit: (I can't click on youtube links at work)

I would say he should've kept his head up but chances are he would've received some sort of cheapshot regardless. And he perhaps didn't know he was coming out of the box. Anyway, that's a good example of when you should ban someone for life. Same with the McSorley - Brashear stick-to-the-head-on-purpose incident.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yvt0B4RXWc (forward to 1:32 if you wanna see the slo-mo).

if not, go to hfboards.com and check the prospects board, they have a huge thread on this hit with lots of video links.

The hit itself is not gory or anything, but watching the player convulsing on the ice is pretty horrible.

Wow, all you "he should be charged" people seriously need to QQ more.
Was it an asshat move? yes.
Should he be punished by the league? yes.
Does he deserve criminal charges? What?! No. I pretty sure he didnt intend to send the guy to the hospital. Its hockey. Shit happens.
Besides the game polices itself. He'll get whats coming to him someday.

IMO there should be less padding in hockey. that way when someone goes to hit someone intentionally they know they themselves may be hurt just as much. If he didnt have so much padding on his elbow he wouldnt have been so willing to throw it.

Sometimes when I play open hockey I omit my shoulder pads and elbow pads (no checking) But I would never try to block a slapshot like that. If players wore less pads they would be much less willing to go hard into the corners and the game would look a lot different.

Do you post on this forum? Like many Ottawa fans, I've been reading it since we last met New Jersey in the playoffs.

So what are you allowed to do because you're playing a sport?
Can he swing his stick at his head? Take off his skate and slash him in the throat? There's obviously a line somewhere.

I think this certainly crosses the line. He did something that was against the rules, and did it intentionally. He also did it to someone who was in a defenseless position, and in such a way that the only reason to do it over just checking them is to try to injure.

It's one thing to throw an elbow because a guy's getting around you or something, but when you've got a guy lined up for a big hit, and think, fuck it I'll just elbow the shit out of his face instead, you were trying to injure him. Well, he did injure someone, and where I stand that makes him guilty of assault.

You mean, it might actually involve thought and skill? instead of skate this way, slapshot, skate that way, slapshot, 'oh the puck bounced just right and I got a goal, Im so lucky', skate that way again.

Yes, there is a line, and it is each players responsibility to know where that line is. Just like in MMA, im sure each one of those guys could easily kill the other but they know where the line of submission is and are trained to not go past it. This fellow either doesnt know the line, or just willingly crosses it - for what purpose? I dont know.

It's not assault - "blind side" hits happen all the time in the NHL - but the key difference is players can be suspended or fined and the older players hormone's aren't all over the place - so they don't purposely try to injury another player - they do it in a manner that sends a message. In this case - I think he should be suspended/fined and be liable for any hospital bills.

Go watch a game where it's the first year the players are allowed to check each other - it's like watching MMA on ice.

As for the comment of less padding - screw that. This isn't old school hockey where the players actually PLAYED the game rather than see how many checks/hits they can accumulate. The game today is faster and more dangerous... as the video obviously indicates.

No, I posted there up until around 2003-2004, then it became clogged with women. Not that I care much whether a poster is a man or a woman, but after the 10th or 11th thread about how cute Scott Stevens's buns were I kind of got fed up. Hopefully it's improved since then.

I moved on to hf boards, which I believe is the most popular hockey message board on the internet.

Crazy. Watch Ilya Kovalchuk or Alex Ovechkin for 5 minutes and tell me there isn't as much skill in this league as there ever has been. There's a lot I don't like about the NHL (including that they still allow fighting) but one thing I appreciate is that the stickhandling and skating ability of these players is simply jaw dropping.

Seriously, watch the shootout goal that Pavel Datsyuk scored in the shootout over the weekend, it is sick to the eleventh power.

Wow, that was awesome.

The player who was injured is out of the hospital, but probably won't play for a while.

As for Cormier, I hope they take him out for the rest of the season+playoffs. It's one of the worst elbows I've seen, and I've watched alot of hockey. It looked premeditated too, he skated in front of the other player with his elbow pointed towards his face.

A blind side hit is a LOT different than what happened here, and player's aren't suspended, because it IS part of the game as long as the hit is legal, and not from behind. And frankly, if a guy plowed someone head first into the boards from behind and broke his neck, I'd say the exact same thing in terms of it being criminal (and it is against the rules). Just because you agree to play a contact sport does not mean other people shouldn't have to take responsibility for their actions, especially if they are doing something outside the rules of the game in an extremely negligent matter. Add malicious intent to the mix, and I don't see how we can just chalk it up to 'well they were playing a game'.

Would you say getting t-boned by a guy is a risk you take driving a car?

yeah Datsyuk's goal was amazing..... and it was only #4 on TSN's plays of the week. Crosby's goal against the Flames took #1.
