Vicious junior hockey hit.

are you allowed to go in with the elbow like that? i dont know much about hockey rules on checking

nope, elbowing is good for 2 minutes in the sin bin, where you feel shame. can be a major penalty too, depending on the severity of the elbow / intent to injure.

elbowing is nasty business nowadays, considering the materials used to make elbow pads. the plastic is hard as f*ck... even a light tap with it doesn't feel very good. a full blown elbow at high speed to the head is very very nasty business indeed.

A properly thrown and landed elbow can be lethal off the ice. Throw in momentum from skating and a guaranteed hard landing on the ice and its quite the lethal cocktail.

That was just horrible. He had the guy cleanly lined up for a big hit, and chose the cheap shot route.

There are times when this happens by accident, because a guy is lined up and then he changes directions suddenly (a lot of knee-on-knee blowouts happen like that), but this guy never changed directions, which means he intended to do what he did the whole way.

Considering the speed each guy was travelling at, and that the elbow pads DON'T give, it was probably akin to getting hit in the head with a bat swung at medium speed.

I'm not so sure he should escape criminal charges for this incident.

He shouldn't and if they are sought, they should be severe. If the ban is imposed by a judge, it should be. If not, it should be imposed by everybody else.

Not doing so is essentially setting him up to be a murderer. I'm sure his parents are encouraging such behavior also. If any evidence of that surfaces, they should be charged as accessories.

Trying to intentionally severely hurt people is flat-out wrong.

I would say he should've kept his head up but chances are he would've received some sort of cheapshot regardless. And he perhaps didn't know he was coming out of the box. Anyway, that's a good example of when you should ban someone for life. Same with the McSorley - Brashear stick-to-the-head-on-purpose incident.

Brutal hit? Yes
I bet none of you have seen an iron range HS hockey game. I played when they first installed plexy around the end zones. You know why they installed it? Not to keep stray pucks in (they had chain link). Not to keep players from going over the edge. It was to keep the blood from spraying the first three rows.

I'm sure the parents of those teenagers loved signing the consent form for their kids to get in bloody matches. I mean when I'm choosing a school district to live in, that's what I'd look for!

Different time and different place. Parents DID love to sign consent forms for their kids to play sports. When the iron range failed, sports were the way out of Dodge.

That is not his first offense of the sort. He did it twice during the world junior championships.

Edit: The Quebec remparts Coach has lodged a complaint with the police. His own son was charged for something a lot less vicious so I can see charges happening.

Wow. He is a real cheap shot artist (always does it while coming on or going off the ice (adds to the element of surprise.)).

I bet he puts on the foil before every game, too.
