a lot of consumers are dumb - and will buy it solely based on its clock speed...perhaps VIA is estimating that at least 10% of the market is stupid enough to purchase a system solely based on clock speed, which is probably correct...and that they can catch that 10% or more...
anyway, the chip could be useful for a semi-low cost firewall/server/productivity machine...
good enough for web browsing, word processing, etc...
if it's priced at what it is now - i woudln't buy it...if it's cheaper than a duron, maybe...for the above purpose only...
however, www.pccanada.com has a PCChips SIS 730S PC266 mobo (integrated) for $135CDN...add a duron 700 for $98 bucks, that's pretty close to celeron+i810 cheapness....

90% of people when faced with buying a computer in about half a years time would probably go with a 1Ghz Cyrix rather than a 800 Mhz celeron of the same price simply because, to them, clockspeed is everything. They dont have time to read reviews and benchmarks and they will probably be using it soley for word/internet which you cant really see the difference anyway. Especially combined with a i810 motherboard, you can get a cheapass chip with no APPARENT difference in performance to a celeron.

If I got a new Cyrix III for my grandfather and overclocked it would that be a dumb idea. Normally I would just buy an Duron or T-Bird but I already have the Socket 370 motherboard so it would be cheeper. The thing I would like to know is is it multiplier locked?
I wonder what they use in their computers at their offices...Cyrix CPUs or Intel/AMD CPUs...heh

I was wandering what if it was comparable to the Celeron and Duron at business apps clock for clock and could run w/out a fan. Also available in Socket 1 and A at 85% of the cost of the other processors. Would it be worth it then? Maybe they should have made this into a SS7 chip that could run at 700+mhz. To me it just doesnt fit anywhere.

The Linpack memory performance curves in the article make this whole thing a bit of a mystery and raise more questions than answered. Either the test is somehow invalid or VIA has managed, at great expense, to design a brand new kind of kluge - the cache memory on this chip.
The article mentions it, but does not expand on it. It would be interesting to see the companion integer memory test also. Maybe the FPU i/o is choking down this FPU memory test, but it sure looks like the cache system is not fully enabled. The memory performance is about on par with a Winchip 266. Why?
If everything VIA claims is inside this chip is functional, the curves should be almost identical with the AMD on the left side of the graph. Instead, it is less than a 1/5 what it should be. ????

I know the MIII sucks, but after I wrote about it above, I thought that if it would work without a fan and cost $60, it might be worth putting it in my computer which only really browses the web and makes CDs for my taxi. My pentium two has a noisy fan or two, it's noisier than some guys' power rigs.
It could be the L2 cache is no good on the chip they have. If that is the case that would make a BIG difference!

shawnmoss, you could kick a turtle up the ass but you'd never make it fly. Imagine a K6-2 floating point unit running at half the speed and you'll see why it sucks. To match your Celeron FPU you'd have to get the chip running at 1.4 gig or something.
