You think that's bad? I once built someone a system with an IDT Winchip2 225MHz. I got the chip for $10 (no joke) and lemme tell ya these people had NO money to spend. Total cost was less than $400 Canadian...I was ROTFL when I fired up a game on this puppy.

....( a suck story - continued) .....

Interview with the Progect Suckervisor or -= The sucKing returns =-

" We've come a long way let me tell ya... And it wasn't easy, hell no!
We've been sucking pretty slow in the beggining and were just pretending to do it faster. Not even MMsuX helped us a great deal... So we were almost lost.
But then came along our brothers at IDT, and they've re-invented the skill - they sucked not worse and maybe even more than we did! But stupid customers had no appreciation of our art and we almost went under.
And that's when Mother-VIA rescued us. She sucked pretty good at chipsets at the time. So our united wit and muscle delivers the suckiest chip yet:

Cyrix III !!! It sucks at 700 blows per second !"

...(to be continued)...

you can't put this chip in an iopener... nm that its socket 370 instead of socket 7, the iopener would just spit it back out like, "i know i came with a winchip (or rise mp6), but damn, this thing sucks even more!"

a lot of consumers are dumb - and will buy it solely based on its clock speed...perhaps VIA is estimating that at least 10% of the market is stupid enough to purchase a system solely based on clock speed, which is probably correct...and that they can catch that 10% or more...

anyway, the chip could be useful for a semi-low cost firewall/server/productivity machine...

good enough for web browsing, word processing, etc...

if it's priced at what it is now - i woudln't buy it...if it's cheaper than a duron, maybe...for the above purpose only...

however, www.pccanada.com has a PCChips SIS 730S PC266 mobo (integrated) for $135CDN...add a duron 700 for $98 bucks, that's pretty close to celeron+i810 cheapness....

...(final words)...

From VIA PR:

And now - hold your breath as we unveil the ULTIMATE SUCK-IN-ONE MACHINE:
-A classified VIA chipset with 1.5 IDE channels!
- 2 AMR and 3 CNR expansion slots!!
-- Integrated S3 graphics suCore (with integrated SPU)!!!
--- Our newest Cyrix III PR1500 running at 633MHz!!!!
---- 3 RIMM slots + 1EDO slot for upgradeable L3 cache!!!!!

... unfortunately can't disclose any more as I'm still under DNA ...uuugh...
....NDA?

90% of people when faced with buying a computer in about half a years time would probably go with a 1Ghz Cyrix rather than a 800 Mhz celeron of the same price simply because, to them, clockspeed is everything. They dont have time to read reviews and benchmarks and they will probably be using it soley for word/internet which you cant really see the difference anyway. Especially combined with a i810 motherboard, you can get a cheapass chip with no APPARENT difference in performance to a celeron.

formulav8 -

I bet your kids are in school already since you chose the Duke Nukem mug and attached your penispecs to the signature.

Why are you all talking crap of VIA's new chipset?
Only because the PR guy miscalled it processor?:)

<< Thats what intel did ramped up the clock speed on a horible performing chip and is anyone buying them? >>

yeah, people will buy the P4 and are buyin em i bet. just becuase we know that its a flop, other people dont know

If I got a new Cyrix III for my grandfather and overclocked it would that be a dumb idea. Normally I would just buy an Duron or T-Bird but I already have the Socket 370 motherboard so it would be cheeper. The thing I would like to know is is it multiplier locked?

I wonder what they use in their computers at their offices...Cyrix CPUs or Intel/AMD CPUs...heh

I was wandering what if it was comparable to the Celeron and Duron at business apps clock for clock and could run w/out a fan. Also available in Socket 1 and A at 85% of the cost of the other processors. Would it be worth it then? Maybe they should have made this into a SS7 chip that could run at 700+mhz. To me it just doesnt fit anywhere.

The Linpack memory performance curves in the article make this whole thing a bit of a mystery and raise more questions than answered. Either the test is somehow invalid or VIA has managed, at great expense, to design a brand new kind of kluge - the cache memory on this chip.

The article mentions it, but does not expand on it. It would be interesting to see the companion integer memory test also. Maybe the FPU i/o is choking down this FPU memory test, but it sure looks like the cache system is not fully enabled. The memory performance is about on par with a Winchip 266. Why?

If everything VIA claims is inside this chip is functional, the curves should be almost identical with the AMD on the left side of the graph. Instead, it is less than a 1/5 what it should be. ????

I know the MIII sucks, but after I wrote about it above, I thought that if it would work without a fan and cost $60, it might be worth putting it in my computer which only really browses the web and makes CDs for my taxi. My pentium two has a noisy fan or two, it's noisier than some guys' power rigs.

It could be the L2 cache is no good on the chip they have. If that is the case that would make a BIG difference!

If they can get power use down even more and cram it into a Ipaq/palm device then it might be worth looking at

Subject: The New Cyrix III (Samuel2 Core)

I might be interested in buying this processor but I would like to have a few things cleared up first. Is it true that this thing runs so cool that you only need a heatsink? The only reason I am even considering this processor is because it looks like this chip would be an awesome for overclocking. Yes I know all the dangers of overclocking. I have been overclocking for 4 years now. What voltage does this chip run at and is it multiplier locked? Also I have heard that it will be available in PPGA. Is this true? I will be building this computer for my grandfather and all he does is surf the net and write e-mails and such so I would obviously not be playing 3D games on it(that's what my Athlon is for). I am going to build the computer out of old parts including a Socket 370 PPGA motherboard. I am not going to get a new motherboard so it the Cyrix III does not work on a PPGA motherboard then forget it. I was going to get a Celeron 533 and overclock it but if this chip comes in PPGA format then I will buy it. Also is there a problem with your L2 cache or it that how it is supposed to operate? I am referring to Anandtech's review of you processor here... http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1396 .It seems that the L2 cache was not working at all which is why the benchmarks would be that low. If there is a problem is this going to be fixed before the final release of the processor? Also is it possible that the processor Anandtech received was bad? If the benchmarks are correct I'll probably still consider it only because I want the processor just to put together and try for myself. Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,
Shawn Moseley

Do you think it makes me sound like a total ass?

shawnmoss, you could kick a turtle up the ass but you'd never make it fly. Imagine a K6-2 floating point unit running at half the speed and you'll see why it sucks. To match your Celeron FPU you'd have to get the chip running at 1.4 gig or something.
