Naw, screw that, I'll just stroll my happy ass over to the foreign language department and get someone who speaks Chinese if you need me to. My Japanese professor is Chinese, though she's out for today; I could ask her tomorrow if I can't find anybody today.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Japanese professor is Chinese?? Now that is strange.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In college, my french professor was an american...that's not necessarily wacky. Not just japanese people speak the language.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know that but there is a great deal of tension between China and Japan. I don't think it has abated all that much. Most Chinese people probably haven't forgotten the Rape of Nanking etc.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tension between China and Japan? The Japanese people never renamed Chinese food as "freedom food."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

you've never been to china or japan have you? it's true, there is great tension between the people and china and japan. The Chinese dispises the japanese for the atrocities during WW2 while the Japanese look down on the Chinese, to them, the Chinese is a bunch of peasants.

It was a joke...note the smiley

There are four peas in a pod. Each pea is a club. Each club is a pea. Stamps exist as entities. The library holds the key. The key to victory.

7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.

Hey, as long as you don't start getting things with 11 on them, or that add up to 11, then you're alright. Everything else is small time. But the 11 thing? That's Illuminati territory, and Fallen Angel stuff, and you don't want to fvck with those people.

I don't think this question has been answered - has the doctor possibly done anything to piss off someone?

This would certainly be troubling to receive. I frankly think the police will do nothing, since the course of correspondence is so vague, but I would report this if it were me. I find it creepy and weird to say the least.

in Chinese (mandarin) the pronounciation of "4" is simliar to the word "death", but it's in a completely different inflection. (4 in the falling inflection, death in the fall-up inflection) spoken correctly, no one will mistake one for the other.

and as far as "luck / number association" is concerned, there is a great variety depending on what region you refer to. the number "8" that is associated with "growth, luck" is generally a southern China thing, though it has begun to pervade other regions.

Japanese on the other hand, is quite similar between the pronounciation of the two words.

assuming the story has merit and warrants further discussion, we really need to know a lot more detail about the parties involved.

anyway, so far we have:

chinese 4 is pronounced DEATH
and that he should definitely NOT do anywhere near a library (which is hard considering you drive right by one on the way to the office--he could go the back way though)
and calling the cops sounds like a good idea

any more? This is getting pretty interesting, albeit strange

Yea, dust the envelopes for fingerprints.

Pretty much pointless, though worth a shot. Unless you live in a small-ish city and the mail was sent within that city you're going to find probably 25 different prints from the people who handled it on the way to its destination. Which brings up an interesting point: if the person sending the letters was a post office worker and as such is expected to handle the letters, wouldn't you overlook him?

i doubt the person behind this would leave prints, he seems highly calculated with a clear intention.

One of my mom's co-workers (a doctor--my mom is a nurse) has been getting random letters in the mail with no return address. The letters have been addressed to him and his wife by name (first + last). Thus far he has gotten three of them.

Number one was a 4 of hearts playing card
second was a 4 cent stamp
Just yesterday was a cut out of the Library from the game "Clue" (it was actually cut out from the game board)
*NEW INFO* on one of the envelopes (my mom doesn't remember which), there was an upside-down number 4 in that corner where the return address should be

Can anyone connect these? Or is this just some random prank?

I think it is VERY strange...

Okay, here's the plan:

First, hide behind a bush and watch the mail box. Then when the guy comes by and places the letter in the mailbox, jump him. Beat him down with a stick or something. Now, he's gonna claim that he's the mailman, but don't listen. He's lying. Then, once he can't fight back anymore, throw all the letters at him and ask him why he keeps shoving these things in your mailbox. Oh, don't forget to ask him why he's so obsessed with the number 4. And don't forget to let us know the results. Good luck.

I think that everyone thinks this is Chinese related because of all the New Year threads and the "4 is unlucky" thread. Anyway, I highly doubt that this, if it is legitimately a threat, is from a non-white.

People of all races commit crimes, but the crazy ones (Dahlmer, Ed Gein, Green River Killer, Son of Sam, Columbine, OK City, etc) are white. They are the ones that do all the creative/interesting murders. The rest are usually crimes of passion. Yeah, I know there are exceptions. There always are. But seriously, think about it. I personally enjoy the creative ones more. No, I am not condoning them or any crime. But they make the investigation more interesting.

So, has anyone come up with any other theories?

Or if you still have the envelopes they could always DNA test the back of the stamp to see if anything shows up...not sure if they would do this though as nothing has really happened yet.

In this era, the vast majority of stamps dont need to be licked. Alot of envelopes are have adhesive too.

Hmm...or four lives [of one person possibly]? If you have a family of four, I'd be scared shetless. The four of hearts representing four lives makes perfect sense to me.
