here are some stretches for you....

2004 is the year of the male wooden monkey on the chinese calendar

In Tarot, an upside down #4 is associated with "The Hanged Man"
* Man hangs upside down from his right foot.
* Cross is in the shape of a T
* Head is illuminated brightly with a halo in the shape of the Sun signifying that the man see rightly
* Legs are crossed in an upside down 4 pattern, linking card to The Emperor.
# Strength, groundedness, authority, leadership.

THE EMPEROR
* Strength, groundedness, authority, leadership.
* Throne is of simple stone with four ram's heads. This ties to the characteristics of Aries.
* Holds an Ankh, universal symbol of life in his right hand.

So it's conceivable that this is a death threat. Doc should contact the police and get a detective on the case.

My theory is that the Dr. pissed someone off while playing Golf (hence the "4" theme). That person so happens to be a librarian who collects stamps.

The 4th letter will explode... maybe.

Naw, screw that, I'll just stroll my happy ass over to the foreign language department and get someone who speaks Chinese if you need me to. My Japanese professor is Chinese, though she's out for today; I could ask her tomorrow if I can't find anybody today.

Your Japanese professor is Chinese?? Now that is strange.

In college, my french professor was an american...that's not necessarily wacky. Not just japanese people speak the language.

I know that but there is a great deal of tension between China and Japan. I don't think it has abated all that much. Most Chinese people probably haven't forgotten the Rape of Nanking etc.

The tension between China and Japan? The Japanese people never renamed Chinese food as "freedom food." :)

Dwelling too deeply into symbolism. You must be an english major.

1. So, if the person sending the letters was smart enough to use so much symbolism, don't worry about any harm. Nerds don't usually harm anyone.

2. If the 4 just means, something simple like he lost a game of poker because the doc caught a 4 of hearts on the river, then be afraid.

this is getting interesting...I am chinese and i have noticed something about the upside down 4. in chinese tradition, people would hang the word Fu meaning fortune on their door during the holidays, but they would hang it upside down, the word dao means tilted which is pronounced very similarly to the word came, dao. So people would look at the word and say Fu Dao, meaning fortune is here. In this case, the upside down 4 would mean death is here.

also someone asked for the pronounciation of library in chinese, it's Tu Shu Guan.

you've never been to china or japan have you? it's true, there is great tension between the people and china and japan. The Chinese dispises the japanese for the atrocities during WW2 while the Japanese look down on the Chinese, to them, the Chinese is a bunch of peasants.

Well, keeping on the four theme, I'd say we wait for the fourth envelope, and see what's inside!

IMO it sounds less like an evil prank and more like some stupid marketing campaign, or other "Someone trying to be cute and surprise them" sort of situation.

If they were actually trying to _threaten_ the guy, wouldn't they do it in such a way that he would understand the threat?

Because it scares the sh!t out of them while they're at it. You want your victim to be afraid. People are irrational when they are afraid.

Aren't death threats through the mail a federal felony? That would be a trip to federal pound me in the ass prison.

Unfortunately, it's nowhere near a death threat.

I'm starting to think Kauru is making all of this up. She obviously isn't taking it very seriously.

is the doctor chinese or asian?
does he have any chinese patients?

if the sender did this, then he must expect him to understand it and wants him to know or do something

How is that weird? Do you even know where Japan got its written language from? (HINT: CHINA)

My Japanese teacher was from India

as long as the letters haven't been passed around, couldn't the police fingerprint the stuff inside the envelope? Or if you still have the envelopes they could always DNA test the back of the stamp to see if anything shows up...not sure if they would do this though as nothing has really happened yet.
