Vegans...

Not in college yet, younger. Definitely NOT active in the community. Never have felt I can make a difference. I know I couldn't possibly fix ONE of the things wrong with the world, so I don't try. I have never felt guilty if I don't do something "to make a difference". Never owned birkenstocks, I wear cargo shorts and new balances.

Hmmm... any leather in those new balance shoes?

I felt the need to speak my piece. I did.

So, you've "been a Vegan" for all of 24 hours, eh? We'll see how long it lasts.

BTW, a TRUE Vegan not only does not eat meat, but does not wear leather or animal hides of any kind either.

/hands you your loincloth made of tree bark

Here, put this on. Preach to the masses. 😀

Obviously you felt the need. Yep, exactly. I said the same thing to myself, "I'll see how long I last". Who knows, I may be back on here talking about the first piece of meat Ive had in a few days. We'll see. I know what a vegan is, and I don't wear leather or animal hides of any kind 😉. Why would I preach to the masses? I haven't started preaching, nor do I wan't to.

No.

anyway, I'm off to bed. Best of luck w/ your veganism. Just don't bomb a mcd's, eh? 😉

Honestly, I think you are misinformed on a lot of your points as to the living conditions of animals on farms. Remember, PETA only shows you the extreme cases. But hey, I appreciate a person with a strong opinion, so if you feel better for not munching down on Wilbur, more power to you.

I think chickens are some of the worst. They're in cages barely big enough to fit in, and their skin constantly rubs on the galvanized metal wire.. creating cancers and lesions. They're stacked from floor to ceiling in cages with open bottoms, allowing all the droppings from above to fall on the chickens below.

Is that you you americans do things?? In canada there are no chickens raised for human consumption under those conditions. It is not financially feasible to treat your animals that poorly. There are laying hens that are raised in stacks of cages maybe 5 or 6 high, but they are given a fairly high square foot allotment. I think your example is a bit of a "worst case" senario, perhaps an old farm that was granted a grandfathered exemption from new rules.
Not from what I've read, it seems pretty commonplace.

There just isn't enough room. They would obviously use the space as efficiently as they could, without hurting production(dead chickens). The ammount of meat in all stores in the US at any given time is absolutely stunning.

I wouldn't doubt that it is a big exaggerated, but I do not believe it is possible to grow hundreds of thousands of chickens a DAY in humane conditions and keep profits up.

Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't there more to being vegan than just not eating meat? Aren't they forbidden from using leather, eating eggs & cheese and stuff like that? Otherwise, I think you're just a vegetarian.

I just decided to go vegan, after realizing/seeing what goes on in the factory farms (some may say those are lies, etc). I would still eat, say, a fish if I caught it myself (so you could say I am not vegan, but the fact is, I never go fishing). I am not completely against eating meat, but the fact is, I couldn't kill a cow myself. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it. I understand that "we are the stronger species, top of the food chain, etc" but is that any justification to the inhumane way we "process" animals for food? I think not. I can't eat meat that has been processed that way, knowing what goes on. It makes me sick.

Flame on if you wish.

i can kill a cow myself.

i can and will butcher it.

sorry, blood doesnt scare me.

i clubbed a rabbit to death, skinned it, and boiled it's meat.

it was good.

So you assume you can kill a cow yourself, yet you haven't done it. Blood doesn't scare me either, but killing a mammal that large isn't something Id like to do. I bet it was, and see, you killed that rabbit fast, humanely. I have nothing against you for eating that rabbit at all.

I've shot a rabbit, and later had to hold it by the head and wing it around to break it's neck because it woke up in the game pouch of my hunting coat. Hows that?

I wish I am just misinformed, but how could I be sure? It makes sense though, companies are in it completely for the money, they could careless about the way they do the job, as long as it gets done. The more animals processed, the more money they make. Thanks. If I mess up once, Ill come back to this thread and you all can make fun of me, deal?

Fine. Its not like you knew it was still alive before it woke up in your pouch. Do you guys get it now? Its not about the killing of the animal, but who does the killing, for what purpose, and how.

Yeah he is. Thats funny, because I am not skinny at all.

You will be. I was 245 pounds when I started being vegan in Sept 2000. By December 2000 I was at 165 pounds, and I ate constantly.

It wasn't a healthy 165 either.

Thats good to know. I am 215 now, and Id like to get down to ~170. What exactly did you eat during the course of a normal day?

I figured. I could tell by how you ended it with "How's that?". Its ok, my best friend hunts deer, but I don't mind.

I couldn't kill an animal, but if someone else does I don't feel bad. That's life of an animal. I'd rather argue about abortion(which I'm also okay with) than animals. Whose to say that killing of animals in our society isn't natural and what was meant to be? It's natural for us. I think a good reason to be Vegan is just that you appreciate life of the animals, no matter if they are brutally killed or not.

I tried my best. I guess i'll just have to go to bed now 🙁

2 bowls pasta with fake cheese, broccoli, and sauce. Sometimes with tofu.
2 bowls soy ice cream
3 cups chocolate soy milk
2-4 liters soda
1/4 loaf vegan bread
2 tblspoons peanut butter

That was about an average day. I was hungry *all* the time. The weight started coming off even faster when I moved back to Mississippi. They didn't have any soy products anywhere in my town.

Many people seem to focus on the killing part. They aren't brutally killed.

The problem, IMO, lies in the being raised for food and conditions that come along with it.

We eat lots of meat, but it is from free roaming grain fed animals.

You haven't tasted good meat until you've had meat from an organically fed animal. Don't you think what the animal eats goes into the quality of the meat?

Why do you think deer meat is so good?

No wonder! :Q

You need MUCH MUCH more seeds, nuts, grains and greens in there. You should become much more healthy if you eat correctly..

When I started getting into the health craze, and decided to try it myself.. I ate nothing but fruit, vegetables and raw nuts/seeds for a week. Let me tell you, I had never felt better. I didn't realize that I felt sh!tty all the time until I felt better.

The eating healthy thing went on for about 6-8 months. I had never felt so good in my life..

I eventually slipped, and went back to my junkfood ways, although with a different perspective.. I try and stay away from the things that are really bad for you. Convienence food is just too damn.. convienent. :frown: 😛

The first time I had fast food after that period was horrible. It felt like it just sat in my stomach for hours.. and it really made me feel like garbage.

i saw the cow killed and butchered... the only reason i wasnt doing it was because she was much better at butchering animals.

the way she killed it was a .22 at the base of the skull, into the brain cavity. severs the brain stem, the animal never feels a thing.

and the rabbit struggled, see? it took about 4 hits to break the neck with the stick. from there, i stepped on the head and further separated the head from the spine, completing the severing of it. after that, i cut off the head, gutted it, and ripped the skin off.

most people dont know this, but rabbit eyes arent that bad. if the liver looks healthy, then you can eat the eyes, and they are a great source of electrolytes, the same stuff as in gatorade.

then it was a simple matter of cutting the various muscles off, little rinsing, and throwing them in the pot.

Yeah, the same thing happened to me after eating really good for a week. I went to our local greek festival, and the next day the movie theater (had popcorn). My stomach still hasn't forgiven me. I woke up at 7AM with the worst pain/cramping feeling in my abdomen. It was sh!tty. I hope I lose as much weight as you did.
