Was there a pic of the parents? Are they really skinny? I'm just wondering if they were, or atleast she was, a relatively normal weight and would be able to support the child by breastfeeding.

There's more to it than that - nutrients don't magically appear in the mother. In order to pass them down to the infant, she has to be eating them as well. Also, the ability to breast-feed has nothing to do with the size of the cans in question.

But I digress. Bob Barker says "Spay and neuter." 😛

This reminds me of the Christian Scientists who do nothing but pray even when their kid has Pneumonia and is screaming in pain for help. Castrate the man and tie the tubes on the wife. Anyone who lets their kid die from what amounts to stupidity does not deserve to have kids.

I guess I don't see the relevance of the fact that they are vegans - even the prosecutor, according to the article, argued that "the baby suffered a prolonged and painful death, not because of what he was fed, but because he was fed too little and that his nutritional needs were deliberately ignored by his parents." They do sound like idiots IMO, though, and I have no problem with seeing them sent to prison.

The fact that they were vegans was used on both sides of the case. The defense argued that since the parents had so much respect for animals they would change their lifestyle, there is no way they could kill their son. The prosecutor obviously used to to explain why there was only soy milk.

Sane vegans can find nutritious foods while staying "true" to what they believe, these people are obviously morons.

Well, at least they were kind enough to stop their own bloodline.

Once in a while Darwin beats the system!

I know that sounds mean, but come on. If we keep letting the idiots survive and breed, what will come of humans?

O, I totally agree. I was just wondering about the health status of the parents. If she wasn't getting enough nutrients, she wouldn't be able to pass them along.

Hehe, size of cans... 😛

I don't think vegan has any place in this argument (I am not a vegetarian/vegan)...it's simply a case of starving a child now matter what the food source was.

I think this is becoming more popular today to 'breed' models in the future. Anna Nicole Smith was accused of this as well.

Really sad because they're going to prison for life and maybe they deserve it, but it doesn't seem what they did was out of malice. This is a case where a good public flogging is in order, then let them go.

softy!

edit; Any Vegan who has no idea of proper nutrition needs, completely missed the training course and is "Vegan" in name only. I am sure there is a book titled "Feeding Your Baby The Vegan Way" somewhere.

Soy milk? When I lived in Australia, my wife baby-sat for a single mom who had a 2 year old who had no dairy, and only drank soy milk, and that kid was sickly. I understand people's reluctance to have dairy (although I don't agree), but to deny that sort of nutrition/fat content to a growing child makes me angry.

Why wouldn't they breast-feed the baby if they're vegan? The kid could've gotten all the nutrition he needed :|

Most of the time when people choose soy milk over cow's milk for their babies, it's because the baby is alergic to cow's milk and could die from the reaction. I would bet it was not soy milk they were feeding it, but soy based baby formula, which is just as nutritious as formula's based on cow's milk. Oh, wait, a two year old, so it might have been plain soy milk. Don't assume that it's not healthy - for most people it's healthier. His sicklyness had nothing to do with soy milk.

Do vegans believe it is wrong/cruel to breast-feed their own kids? That's all they would have needed to do to keep the kid alive in this case.

Vegans usually breast feed I think. I don't know why these ones wouldn't. The baby would have been malnourished on just juice and soy milk, but what killed him was being starved.

These parents are absolute incompetent idiots. I'm sure plenty of other vegans have no problem raising their kids.

This wasn't a vegan problem. It was an idiot problem.

That said, I don't know how the hell anyone can survive being vegan. I'm vegetarian but the leap to vegan would be impossible (at least 180g of my daily protein comes from animal products).

It was probably impossible for the mother, given her diet.
Cows or pandas seem to manage just fine with a purely vegan diet. I think a human could manage as well.

I wouldn't be so certain of that. We have some difference in anatomy from evolution. Our bodies are designed to be omnivores. It takes extreme amount of effort to be a healthy vegan (if that is even possible).

This is a good point - plenty of babies do just fine on non-dairy based formula. In fact, one of mine did, and had no nourishment issues. I wonder if the parents in this case were using formula at all? Whatever the case, this is just very, very sad. 🙁

Life emulates fiction.

Wasn't there a House MD episode on this ? It, of course had a happier ending.. Parents were arrested, baby was saved only it turned out to be some other weird disease caught just in the nick of time. You know, like every other episode.

parents should have to pass parenting courses or something. This is rediculous.

Or just ban wacko liberals from breeding. Oh and just to be fair, religous zealots should be banned too.
