nVidia is getting away with it because the competition doesnt show up. So the first step is to say "no" to the part of the market which cant compete on a time shedule.

Why don't you wait until the release at least before you go into defend nVidia and bash AMD no matter what mode? You might not have to if they come out @ $500 and $400 with 30% performance increase.

GM104 is the replacement for GK104. It's supposed to be faster and cheaper. If it's any more than what the GTX 680 was on release then the rumors were all lies/hype.

You are complaining about the rumored prices. And yet even at $449 a GTX970 will be a better buy than a 290X.

At least nVidia is forcing AMD to cut their prices down to $399 for the 290x to stay even relevant.

970 won't be faster than 290x, that's why it is going to be cheaper.

The Custom cards will be as fast or faster than the 290x. And they dont cost more.

/edit: This happened with the GTX670, too.

The problem for AMD is that about 60%+ of customers (current customer base) has decided they are going to buy NV. A new model for NV just consolidates that position.

Sounds like some marketing BS to me.

Whatever.

I won't be, but I hope the 290s and 290x's come down some. I don't see this as taking me towards 4K. AMD has and will.

If the GTX 980 costs $500 and is 30% faster than GTX 780TI it will be a great deal and a great upgrade, if its $700 and neck and neck with the 780ti, its going to be the worst EVER hardware release in the history of the world.

Same goes for the 970. If the GTX 970 is $350, 25% fasten than the GTX 770 it will be a great deal, it will be an amazing upgrade, if its $450 and goes neck and neck with the 770, its going to be the second worst hardware release in the history of the world.

Stay on topic, and stop derailing this thread.

How about you check his posting history, its important to point out that he does actually work for Nvidia, he's played employee swaying public opinion on this forum.

Its perfectly legitimate within the context of discussing Nvidia.

Infraction issued for moderator callout.

It's possible $399/$499 were the original price points, but since Tonga looks like it will disappoint, Nvidia believes the 295X will not compete with the GTX 980, and is going to raise prices accordingly.

The other possibility is Nvidia will simply cut to these prices when AMD releases a card in response to the GTX 980, but until that happens they will have a higher pricing structure. Kind of like how the GTX 280 was $650 and then cut to $499 later when AMD responded.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 has been a mystery until now. The new flagship will adopt GeForce GTX TITAN/780/780Ti cooling solution. It is a blower type cooler capable of dissipating 250W of power. This time it will only have to deal with 180 Watts, leaving plenty of headroom for overclocking.

Now let’s take closer look at the card. First up, there are some cosmetic changes, like the one below.GeForce GTX 980 has two 6pin power connectors. There is a space for another 8pin connector, but we are more than sure it is not necessary. It is said that GeForce GTX 980 will require only 180W, so PCI-E interface and two 6-pin connectors are more than enough. The memory layout has of course changed, as we have modules with higher capacity. This particular sample is using Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 4Gb (128Mx32) modules. However the biggest improvement can be seen on the back. NVIDIA has adopted TITAN Z backplate for its new flagship. There is a removable part over power connectors. We do not know why yet.

What pictures do not show is the new display output configuration. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 has five display outputs: DVI, HDMI, and three DisplayPorts. We heard that GTX 980 and 970 may feature HDMI 2.0 support, but we were unable to confirm it.The power section has been redesigned. GTX 980 has 5 GPU phases (780 Ti had 6), but the VRM has been greatly improved. Anyway, it’s late, so enough talking, have a look at the PCB, you can also see the new bracket (which looks similar to TITAN Z).

They also some some more info, including that one of the 970 OC cards has a base speed of 1152 and boost of 1280. If it could stay boosted, that could be competitive with the 290X.

By the way, if this actually has hdmi 2.0, it's going to bring new life to the htpc gaming market. Hopefully its 4K performance isn't hampered by the memory bus.

Now that's a good looking PCB and cooler. Much better than the earlier reported PCB and coolers.

Looks like nvidia decided to keep the SLI bridges instead of implementing a PCIE based access setup like AMD. I wonder if they didn't have enough time or if they couldn't get it working properly.

Same TDP as the GTX 680. Unless there are additional perf/watt improvements over GM107, I think that seals the deal as being about 10% faster than 780 TI. While the Titan cooler and backplate look great, I couldn't care less how my cards look after installed. I've long since moved past the windowed, cool cathode, neon lights looks. If the costs associated with the Titan cooler and backplate are significant to the bottom dollar, I'd personally rather just see plastic surrounding the same fan and no backplate to save money on the end cost to users. Not everyone thinks of or correlates high end video cards as being uber fancy cars.

Or perhaps they didn't want to fix what wasn't broken.
