Also known as the coverage where they reject you if you have any sort of condition or prescription required? My health insurance is over $300 for just me. It's a group HMO plan in a company with about two dozen employees.

Anyhoo Vancouver is kind of like Canada lite, IMO. All that movie industry business and being so close to the border...

$300/month? I pay $120/month for my family plan.

I see some people disagreeing with the top choices in the survey, and they do raise some valid points. I'm fine with that - obviously no city is perfect.

None of those people, however, gave their pick and made valid points to support their opinion.

I honestly want to see some solid examples of what people think are the best places to live in.

How much is your employer paying? I pay only 10% of my plan's cost. (not the $300, something like $40 or so per month)

Just to put this to rest, $120, or even $300 is ridiculously low for family coverage

It's closer to $11,000 per year, or $900 per month in 2005. And health care cost percentage increase per year is in the high teens.

As for it being 104°F (40°C), Wikipedia seems to disagree with you. The warmest average monthly high is a cool 71°F (21.9°C), so it might get up to 104°F, but it would seem to be very abnormal.

71°F in August is way too cold for me.

Nope........ that wiki is wrong............. I live here......... it gets to mid 30's (95F) usually around 30C (86F) for a couple months when a heat wave is on. SUmmer temps are in the high 20's (78F).

$900 is about what the plan I have would cost for family coverage. I don't have family coverage, it's just me, and like I said, it's over $300 for that.

$11,000 per year would almost account for the difference in income tax. Plus you have to consider any deductibles and copays.

That amount just for insurance makes me cringe. I thank the CCF for having such a progressive vision as universal health care.

I, myself, have witness some serious f'ed up racist sh1t in Vancouver... things I have never seen in California or western PA.

With soo many chinese there, I thought Vancouver would have been less racist. (unless it is the chineses who administer the racism)

Bingo. Chinese are racist (comes from thinking they are the centre of the universe for 5000 years).

That's weird. I walked around in a couple of shopping centers in Richmond, being the ONLY white person in some of these places, and I felt perfectly fine. Nobody gave me the cold shoulder, nobody in any stores ignored me or talked short to me, everybody was very polite and friendly, it was quite nice.

To be honest, I much prefer the supermarkets that are Chinese run over the ones that aren't here. There's one across the street from me that has a lot of Chinese employees, and I love shopping there, they're always very polite and friendly, and it's obvious that they enjoy their jobs and it reflects on the store. Down the street is another store that's pretty much all white employees, and there's maybe one or two people I've met working there that are worth anything. The rest talk over customers to each other, stand around chatting, try to avoid helping customers find items, that sort of thing.

I'm sure there are some Chinese people out there that are racist, but then again, there are a lot of white people out there that are racist, and some from every race.

More towards other asians and darker skin people than white people.

That's pretty common amongst Immigrants. In most cases it's not Racism as much as it's Nationalism(former Nation). My father who had Immigrated from Hungary always wanted his kids to Marry Hungarians, as an example, though he wasn't really harsh about it. If he knew of a Hungarian family he'd be sure to get us altogether. :D

I don't think it's reprehensible to desire for your kids to marry someone with a similar cultural background. But if you decide you want to marry someone not of the same culture and they are rude or insulting or otherwise not supportive, that would be a big issue.

I suppose that's possible. My wife's family is all from Hong Kong, and I've never felt like an outsider, not even with her grandparents who speak zero English (I speak zero Cantonese). But there's definitely a strong distaste for the Japanese back in China, although I haven't detected anything like that for any other races/countries. They're all very nice and very accepting from what I've seen.

Some are more open than others of course. And Chinese people don't really show outward disdain (maybe only toward the Japanese).

Forced? Did they find a mental hospital there to finally take you?

Comparing Seattle to New York after living in the city is ridiculously clean.

Vancouver is loaded with homeless people. It's kind of an odd city, I guess you have to be Canadian to get it.

And all that is assuming that you don't already have insurance through an employer.

Where do you get top of the line healthcare insurance for $300 USD for the whole family?
I am looking at my paystub right now and I am paying about $70 every two weeks or about $140 per month just for me. My company is paying 60% and all employees are paying 40% of heathcare cost, so for the sake of debating, my cost is really over $300 just for myself. I live South of the USA.

BTW, I never been to Canada, but everyone that I know <that been to Canada> told me Canada is cleaner than US overall. I also read somewhere that Vancover has some of the best stripclubs anywhere.
