I just purchased the game off Steam (it's now $9.95 until tomorrow), but for some reason the game defaults to super-low resolution textures. It looks like an N64 game. I know this isn't a cutting edge game, graphics-wise, but it looks hideous. Something is certainly wrong; I've seen pictures where the game looks much, much better. The HUD also looks really bad and pixelated. This is at 1680x1050 after hacking the engine.dll file for WS resolutions, but the game looked just as bad at 1600x1200 on a clean install, so I doubt that's the problem.

This seems to be an issue with nVidia drivers...has anyone experienced something similar? I'm using Vista-64 bit.

EDIT: Definitely a driver issue: using the 15x Forceware drivers fixes the issue.

Hmm... guess I'll have to reload this game. It was fun to play but the constant loading screens got tedious.
First time I went through as a Brujah seductress/killing machine. Maxed out Strength, Dexterity, Potence, Celerity, and Melee skill. No one stood a chance.

this was a great game.. i played the original 'build' of it when it constantly hiccuped, froze, and crashed. and continued to play it, because that's how good it was.

Man, I patched it and played through the first time this month as a Gangrel. I can't believe how long it was and I got it for $10 used on the FS/FT board. Amazing game. All six endings are on YouTube BTW if you don't want to go through the ending battles multiple times. I can see why people would play through again with different powers, but I don't have time for that.

does the Steam version of this game have any more patches/updates than the retail version?

This game is right up my alley in terms of content. I tend to like dark, sinister, fantasy stuff a lot. I'm not the best RPGer at this point...shockingly I didn't like Diablo 2 (sacrelig!) as I got tired of killing killing and killing some more. Too repetitive, and to be honest, I wasn't sure how to thoughtfully "spend" points in order to improve my character. I just quit playing after a while.

That said, I intend to play some of the RPG classics, which this is obviously one, in order to gain a better appreciation for the genre. BG2, VMB, Planescape Torment...all games I want to play. This game (VMB) just seems so cool...I want to like it. What I've seen on YouTube is just awesome.

What a great game to play around Halloween:evil:.

The thread lives, I love you bloodlines. Troika may be dead, but at least they ended on one hell of a note.

If you purchase the retail version from amazon which patch(es) do you need? Vaguely i think there are two 'official' unofficial patches that are created by different teams.... I've forgotten exactly which is what and what folks recommend... Also are there other patches required prior to patching with the above ?

There is a 1.2 official patch needed first, then you have a choice of 2 patches

1. Wesp patch, a mod that fixes bugs but also changes a gameplay a lot.
2. Tessmage "true" patch xxAT - fixes only, not gameplay. (warning: website is NSFW - toon nudity)

Links & info in the monster ArsTechnica thread - GESC bloodlines

Last time I checked a free GameSpot membership was another way to download some of the patches.

I can not seem to find this at a reasonable price... was there only a limited run or something... read that the company went under pretty much right after... is that why?

It has been in stock off and on at amazon.com and gogamer.com for $20 many times over the last couple of years, and it has sometimes been as low as $10.

Steam also has it, pre-patched to 1.2, with the price also varying between $10 and $20.

It is very much worth paying $20 for the game.

The Ars / GESC thread has several Steam buyers posting in it. I think they said the user patches installed OK but you should check this yourself.

Of the two which is generally recommended? I'm not a purist - i.e, changes to gameplay is ok if the general consensus it is a better game that way... I realize I can try the game both ways but if I only end up playing once which way do you recommend :)

I prefer the tessmage / "true" patch for a first play through since it is still Troika's design just with scripting fixes.

Wesp has made a lot of changes based on how he thinks the game ought to be, but there isn't some major design flaw like Oblivion's levelling that needed fixing. I'd save this path for a second play-through.

It also needs to be said that Wesp's "bug-fix only" patch isn't completely bug-fixes either. The "True" patch is the way to go if you don't want mods and just want fixes.

I tried this and just couldn't get into the game. Can anyone try to sell me? I don't think I went more than 15 minutes... I just felt like I didn't know where I was going or what I was doing.

that is exactly how i felt with DeuSex

if you hate hybrid RPG/FPS games like DE, then VtMB is not for you ,,, if you like DE, give VtMB time
:clock: .. it takes a long time to set the story up and although it IS linear it is not so "obvious"
--there are no flashing signs over NPCs "talk to Shorty" :p

ADD? 15 minutes is not enough time to get into ANY RPG. Hell, most RPG's will barely get past the introduction in that amount of time. Vampire is not for the twitch FPS gamers. It's probably one of the greatest PC games in a long time - even with all its bugs. Vampire is a work of art, something that can't be said about very many games. You just gotta give it a few hours, it'll pull you in.

I actually never played DeusEx, it somehow slipped past me. I also never played System Shock 2...

Sometimes I miss out on some good games, but I like to think I've played most of the best ones

I loved it, but I've since lost the CD in one of my moves. I've been tempted to rebuy it off Steam just to play again tho.
