so i've got a question. in nearly all the crashes, you see that these guys lock their wheels in practically every crash. Why are they locking their wheels? i mean don't they have ABS in these supercars, and even if they don't wouldn't the drivers know better than to lock their wheels when out of control? unless its some tactic in racing that i had no clue about...

ok, i understand they're going at like 150 mph, and at that speed all you really want to do is slow down as much as possible- its near impossible to regain control over yoru vehicle if you spin out at that speed! but even then, locking wouldn't help brake the car FASTER?!

any racing fans out there who can shed some light for me?

ive heard abs is bad for racing....i think it dramatically increases stopping distance or distance it takes to slow down....so if they are coming into a courner fast and wanna shave off speed quickly if they hit ABS thats going to slow them down not as quickly and thus they will loose lap time (least thats what i think)

i know a bunch of autoXers that pull the fuse in their car for abs when they race

hell i don't even think WRC cars have abs and they are the ones u think would need it the most

but i could be wrong

That guy just called he wants that thing back from that one time.

huh?
i'm just mimicking the filename, which i didn't chose...

I think it's difficult in certain conditions to make ABS stop a car as quickly as non ABS. It's nice for a commuter car, but few sports cars have it. The viper fairly recently got it and I know that F1 cars don't have it, though that may be because of rules rather than anything else, but I think a good driver can brake better in a racing event without it.

with WRC i'd understand-- i mean if you're driving at that speed on those surfaces, the last thing you need is a brake that pulsates! to maintain control on the car you need constant braking pressure. i wonder if its the same reason for racing cars on tracks? hmm...

Without knowing what car it is, it's hard to tell if it has ABS or not.

ABS does help in almost every instance. However, race cars usually don't have ABS because if something breaks, you can lock up the tires and make the car travel straight. It also helps if you get turned around backwards.

ahhh, could this be the demise of the viper or a welcomed addition? wonder if there are some hardcore drivers who drive a viper and are like eew, ABS?

You're right in that locking your tires is bad. It dramatically increases stopping distance.... not to mention, it will flat-spot your tires if done for long enough.

As far as watching racers do it--it usually only happens in crashes--and its usually panic-induced. ABS is a stop-gap measure for people who CAN'T brake well--it prevents you from "locking up" by pulsing the caliper. However, if someone is REALLY on their game (as most professional racers are), ABS increases stopping distance because a good driver can "ride the edge" of their brakes (sadly, the best stopping is done at near-lockup... so its a fine line). ABS is noticeably less effective than riding the line.... but it requires MUCH less skill (stomp on the pedal).

Not to mention, in F1, some people have been accused of using "see-saw" brakes that either 1) allow the driver to alternatingly brake side/side or front/back. Then locking individual wheels/sides could be beneficial.... 🙂

Ugh, no way would I want ABS in my race car. It's up to me to modulate breaking pressure, I don't need a computer doing it for me. Plus, in most race cars, you have brake bias adjusters and brake proportioning valves (mine has both). I'm not sure how all of that would work correctly if you threw ABS in the mix. The amount of pressure applied front vs rear is very important in race car handling, ABS thrown in would create a lot of problems.

dammit, just got an error, the files are too large for my host.

anybody know of any free hosting companies that support AVI files?
somethign like 200 MB with unlimited bandwidth or anything like that?

Actually it's been proven that under most conditions, a state-of-the-art 4channel ABS system will have shorter stopping distances than even the best threshold braking. Locking the brakes in road racing is generally a mistake... they don't do it on purpose but the red mist does get them and there's nothing that they can do sometimes.

The reason why it isn't used in most forms of racing is simple... you lose control of the car.

When ABS kicks in, there's nothing else you can do... once ABS activates you usually can't use more advanced driving techniques like left-foot braking. Once the ABS system is on, there's no brake modulation at all. I autoX and I know that sometimes getting the rear wheels to lock for a tiny bit under braking can help some cars rotate... why brake faster when you can change the car's direction without losing more speed? It's difficult to get ABSactive/tractioncontrolled cars to oversteer during braking. In all forms of motorsport it's been proven that you can go faster without eletronic braking aids.

In rally, it's completely and positively useless if you can pitch the car into a controlled drift and sometimes that involves locking the brakes. Having ABS in the snow is completely bad. Having snow build up in front of your locked wheels will stop you faster than the ABS system pulsing in futility.

Electronic driving aids are all fine and dandy for the average joe idiot that's on the road today but it does make your car slower on the track. Drove my friend's Boxster with electronic aids and I couldn't stand it... same with the BMW Z4 and the 350Z... to some degree those aids were obstrusive. I want to powerslide not understeer!!!! Turning it off did help me feel more in control as a driver and let me have a whole lot more fun.

Except on wet pavement, snow, ice, gravel, sand, or anything other than perfectly dry pavement. Fully locked wheels stop in HALF the distance of ABS on ice. ABS adds 20% to 30% to the stopping distance over full lockup in snow, on gravel and on sand. ABS is just a little bit worse on wet pavement (assuming no hydroplaning). I'll have to dig up the Road & Track comparison that was done a while back which proved this.

EDIT: R&T's testing also proved that the "wedge of snow" theory about why locked wheels stop faster in the snow is a myth.

yay i was right....and i started a mini debate.....
though i didn'tk now abs worked worse than regular brakes on ice/snow....
though i think for a daily driver id rather be able to have some sort of steering when braking hard (in snow)

ABS in F1 will make their laptimes faster... of course that would also reduce the driver to almost nothing since they currently have traction control now. 😕

the only reason for abs on ice/snow, is like said above, to pulse the brakes, so you can turn. if your used to abs, and try to stop on ice w/o abs, your never going to be able to turn. youll prolly leave completely go of the brake, and try to turn, but end up spinning, while abs, allows you to somewhat turn, and slow down at the same time.

you got a link or anything that proves that?

edit: when i autoX i don't pull the fuse for abs for my car it does suck going around and is quite annoying at times but i don't wanna lock up my tires and slide off course (or destroy my tires more so than i already do)

i do think id prolly do better without it though

I dont have a link for you but on this months F1 Racing magazine... they have a feature of what would have been if the FIA did not ban all the driver aids and aerodynamic advances in Formula One from the beginning... their car had ground effects, active suspension, AWD, turbos, slicks, and ABS, etc... estimated to be 15-20 sec faster than the current F1 cars. I think I have an old Road and Track issue where they explored the same thing including traction control and ABS and ground effects... i'll look for it if you want. The 1992 Williams-Renault FW14B and 1993 FW15 were the most advanced F1 cars ever since they had the afformentioned active suspension, traction control and anti-lock brakes, etc... they held lap records that were only currently broken in the last year or two due to the aerodynamic advancements during the last 7-8 years.

EDIT: IIRC... when Porsche entered their 911 GT1 in the FIA GT in 1996-97... it had ABS... and all the driver had to do was stomp on the pedal as hard as he can as late as he can and the car will do everything for him... 😀 ...well that got banned too. 🙁

I can't unzip it either. I'm using powerachiver.
