Sorry, but that's nonsense. People complained more about DM in UT2k3/4 than anything else. DM and TDM literally DIED in UT2k3 and then was resurrected with a 100% brand new fanbase.

This is exactly my point. You can't please both crowds, which is what UT3 tried to do, and in doing so, left a bad tastes in the mouths of everybody.

But I still stand by my original statement: the BIGGEST problem is that arena shooters simply aren't fun anymore.

It's not that they aren't fun, it's that so many people suck at them.

Take your average initial Q3 game, you have the people who have been playing shooters (actual FPS games, none of this COD4 shit [I realize I started out with Q3 and am framing this in the past but referenced COD4, I couldn't think of a game with a greater newb element that was present in the past]) The new people get DESTROYED, so they quit playing and go back to spray and pray random headshot zomg grenade spam. the exact same thing happens, only to a worse degree, in UT2k4. That's the reason the genre is dead. Everyone wants to feel like they are awesome as opposed to actually being decent/improving they just switch to a game which requires little to no skill. See: everyone popular MP FPS today.

Maybe it's because I'm only running the COD4 demo, but the UT3 demo runs better for me, almost always solid 60 fps at max and 1440x900 with drops when I get shot in the face with a rocket. If I remove the framerate cap I get anywhere from 75-90 or maybe even more, depends on the map. But COD4 maxed at the same resolution with 4xAA and 16xAF seems to run from 35-60 (35-50 in the beginning), probably average in the mid 40s.

This is with an 8800gs and 3.02 ghz C2D.

And is it me, but did the older UTs, back in their day, run better? I mean, even with adequate hardware UT3 can slowdown if you're in the middle of an explosion or something, or other times, but years ago I remember running UT and UT2k3 maxed with AA and always having a solid framerate, even on the older hardware of the time. They were the perfect games for lan games because it would run on the older, spare computers well.

I just think people have moved on. UT99 was great and the subsequent numerous years that passed didn't help the franchise. I bought UT3 last month and tried to get back into it... but WoW has my attention most nights. Just feels more fulfilling than simple deathmatches and CTF.

Personally I enjoy ctf. I skipped the 2k4 version due to the beta DOD (started at 2.0beta) and was hooked. Since DOD:S I've fell out of the scene and that's how I gravitated back to Unreal Tournament. So, for me, its like a fresh start again and I enjoy it 🙂

When UT GOTY came out, online gaming was in it's infancy. The gameplay and weapons were unique, and people made new friends through the unique experience. Arena games aren't particularly unique anymore, and many of the players are pretty hardcore, which raises the bar to entry pretty high. UT2k4 was my first and only online game, and it's special for me. I was willing to put the time in to become decent at it, but I think I'm in the minority. Many new players get frustrated, and quit before they see any results.

I love arena style gaming, but I think UT3 lowered the bar for entry. It's way too spammy, so it's easy for noobs to get an easy frag. It's still skill based, the good players will come out on top(hats off to N7 :^)...), but the nerfed movement, and rocket spam from above gets irritating after awhile.

Sorry, but I think this is nonsense, as well. COD4 is no spamfest - certainly no worse than ANY Unreal game past or present. I go 3:1 - 4:1 in every single COD4 match I play. If it was just a random spamfest, everyone would be 1:1.

Perhaps you've received the same pwnage in COD4 that newbs to UT get, and you've thus branded it "spam", just like newbs to UT brand it "spam".

I played warfare right away when I got UT3 and I didn't last more than 20 seconds after each spawn. It is definitely frustrating as a noob all over again.

No, i got way more than 4:1 in COD4, the game was ridiculously easy, it doesn't change the fact that everyone spams grenades. It also doesn't change the fact that the game is ridiculous with it's last stand and martyrdom 'perks' the whole idea of perks/weapon mods in a skill based game is stupid.

i wholeheartedly agree 110% w/ maleficus's comments here... COD4 is an extremely noob friendly game where you're encouraged to camp and spam as much as possible. sometimes on a medium population server i logged on and spawned, i couldnt walk a foot w/o getting naded and theres nothing i can even do about it. dont even get me started on how the game spawns you either. i tried really hard to like COD4, and i played it for a decent while but it falls flat of my desire for a "classic" fps 🙁

the single player cod4 is great though

UT99 and 2k4 required extreme aiming and movement skills

From what I can tell, more people are playing UT 2004 (and even UT99) online (individually) than are playing UT3. You can still find populated North American Onslaught servers during the day and evening. For Onslaught I recommend the Omnip)o(tents server and the Clan DW Spam Vikings server. People also play Assault Racing and Invasion Monster Hunt RPG is great fun (visit http://www.ClanDW.com to learn more about the Invasion-RPG server).

People are also still playing competitive clan match-style CTF pickup games (PUGs) for UT99 long after what little CTF pug match activity there was for UT3 died out. Go to irc.GameRadius.net #speedpug to learn more.

I don't think so. UT99 had far more people playing on its public servers at a given time after its release than UT 2004 did at the same amount of time after it's release. Far more people were playing UT99 in 2003 (4 years after its release) than are playing UT 2004 today (4 years after its release).

The UI did completely suck, It made UT3 look Old, where the UT2004 interface was modern and was very easy to tweak things. UT3 isint new anymore and there are still hardly anyone playing online, especially CTF. I thought when UT3 came out there was going to be some new weapons but they didnt do anything they carried over the same weapons and took away some cool ones, like the shield. I know that's not really a weapon but it was fun and players couldn't spray you with the gatling gun as easily.

I was so excited to buy UT3. However, they screwed up the linux version. I'm just glad I waited to make sure they released a client. They never did so I never bought it. Because I never bought it, my friends didn't consider it either. They probably lost about 15 sales right there.

We still play 2k4 for that reason.

At least you guys can play UT3 to see if it rules/sucks. When it was "running", it would crash after 10-30 minutes and now for some reason it won't run at all. It crashes on launch or crashes the video diver or locks up my PC forcing a reboot. Un/reinstalls don't help, the latest driver appeared to fix things until the 2nd map loaded, the game crashed and it never worked again. It was pretty unfun when it was playable - Gears of Unreal with half the fun modes taking out isn't what I wanted - but at least I could play it. Worst $60 I spent last year.

The feel of the game play had more of a UT99 feel to it. The reason for a UT99 or UT 2004 veteran to buy it would be to be able to play UT in a community with much higher player counts and clan activity. However, since the game was a failure as a result of its atrocious and consolized user interface and its PC release as a buggy beta with an almost non-functional server browser there's no reason for anyone to buy it.

Epic (perhaps at the prodding of Midway) really fucked the duck with UT3 and may have killed the franchise, but I'm not convinced that they've learned anything. I say this because UT3's problems can be attributed, not to difficult-to-get-right chemistry, but rather to straightforward user interface issues. Epic should have known better than to release such garbage.

(One theory as to what really happened is that the Epic people were fully aware that the game wasn't ready but that Midway put a contractual gun to Epic's head and told them to put the game on store shelves about 6 months before it was ready.) Perhaps if Epic could put out a real UT99-2 if they hooked up with Stardock for their publisher..
