I'm disgusted with it. The only reason I bought it was that I believed they were going to have the LINUX client out promptly, and I wanted to support the more modern games that would run under LINUX. oops. Figures they'd be too lame to have a UT3 release for LINUX in any reasonable time.

I suspect that they scrapped their plans to release a Linux version when they realized that (1) the game was an Epic failure and (2) it might cause a intellectual property problem. Read this post at the ProUnreal.com community. The poster actually investigated this issue and made some phone calls.

Wahoyaho, Give UT 2004 a try. The Onslaught game and Invasion-RPG are excellent, and I say that as a loyal UT99'er. Also, if you still want to play UT99 CTF, you can play competitive 5-on-5 clan-match-style pickup games (PUG) matches if you know where to look. (Try irc.GameRadius.net #speedpug.)

I think the reason UT3 did so poorly was because people aren't enjoying arena shooters like they used to. Of course, people don't REALIZE this... they think it has something to do with the gameplay implementation, rather than the gameplay itself. UT3 doesn't suck because this was nerfed or that was omitted. It doesn't suck because the maps are uninteresting or because they "got" vCTF wrong. In fact, the game doesn't suck at all. The style just isn't fun for most people anymore. The horse has been sufficiently beaten, but no one realizes it yet.

We've had 10 years of rocket launchers, flak cannons, and shock combos. Stick a fork in it already.

Pretty much. I grew tired of DM years ago and CTF really isn't much more than DM.

UT99 > UT2004. In fact UT99 pretty much beats every other multiplayer game released.

This would have been true four years ago, but today there are very few online games left with this gameplay style. Almost everything these days is semi-realistic, with slow player movements and weapons based on real guns. UT3's gameplay style is a breath of fresh air to me.

UT3 did poorly because it was released in alpha condition with almost no configurability, and obviously geared towards consolers. It's a claustrophobic spam fest, with botched weapons and nerfed movement. I played more UT2k4 last week than I have in the last 5 months of UT3. I love arena style gaming, but I'm not going to play garbage just to have the newest.

No, actually this is exactly the reason the game did poorly.

The maps DO suck, the weapons WERE jacked, and the removal of one of the core elements of movement DID destroy the feeling of the game, in addition to it's premature release and the atrocious new engine, yea the game was crap. 2k4 for life.

I actually agree with this somewhat.

UT3 certainly did dumb down the menus way too far, that is absolutely true.
But the gameplay is actually really good...it's just different.

It's not 2k4ish at all really, & it's certainly not like all the other boring "realistic" shooters out there.

It's actually very decently balanced IMO, far more than UT2k4's could ever dream to be.

But it seems people didn't want that.

Heck, even i prefer UT2k4 overall without a doubt.

But there are things they did very well in UT3.
Though apparently, not many people agree with how they did them.

UT3 was just a shitty port from console, that's why it failed. And what put the seal on the deal was the fact that the retail buying PC players were beta testers for the console version.

Are the console players on patch 1.3 as well?

What you UT2k4 diehards fail to recognize is that the UT99 diehards were saying the EXACT SAME THINGS you are when UT2k3/4 was released. They were pissed about the changes that made the game YOU love.

It's impossible to do Unreal right anymore, because no matter what you do, SOMEONE is going to cry about it. THAT'S why it's dead. There's no common denominator anymore.

But Quads Death server is 99% the same:

I think The Mad House is down too.

The only people that care about UT99 are CTF'ers. Screw CTF is my personal opinion, but a lot of people like it.

UT2k4 = DM/TDM masterpiece.

solution? tailor each game mode to it's player base.

and 2k4 was the only one to have any real success in the competitive scene, UT3 tourneys have been being cancelled basically since the day it came out. most recently:
Bad news for the Unreal Tournament 3 community and especially to those few who actually travelled to the Multiplay i34 event. The Unreal Tournament 3 "fun tournament" got cancelled due to the lack of participating players.

Only five players signed up for the tournament: dignitas\Po1son, dignitas\GaRpY, dignitas\Zaccubus, dignitas\Frantic and a fifth player, so the admins saw no point in running the tournament and therefore it got cancelled.

this is the reason why UT3 failed on the PC

the beta was fun to me, but console port was written all over it

things like the piece of shit server browser and only being able to up adjust mouse sensitivity in intervals of 1 turned me off

people had to edit the ini files to really be able to get any kind of customization, and my eventual conclusion was that it was a fun game but I wasn't going to buy the game the way it was because the developer's focus was for console gamers not PC gamers
