Tell me again how the Iraqi people are better off if we do nothing and continue to let Hussein and his thugs murder them by the hundreds.

Keep spouting that crap. Hasn't it become obvious to you yet that these people never asked for your help and don't want it? So don't try to force your moral and altruistic hand on a people that would just as soon cut it off. And if you think your governemt is there for the Iraqi people, you sir are very naive.

Story

It said soldiers motioned for the driver to stop but were ignored. The soldiers then fired warning shots, which also were ignored. They then shot into the vehicle's engine, but the van continued moving toward the checkpoint, according to the statement.

Coming couple of days after suicide bombing against US soldiers in the similar fassion, I would not be surprised if the whole this was set up. Wonder who was driving that van....

Actually, the entire legal basis for the war was the enforcement of the original, and subsequent, resolution(s) for Iraq to disarm. You can argue whether 1441 was working or not, but that's not even the issue. The issue is the U.S. administration believed 12 years with 17 (or whatever it is) resolutions and no TOTAL disarmament of weapons of mass destruction meant the only option to enforce the resolution(s) was force.

That's the basis for this action being the legal and right thing to do.

Yes, that's the ticket. We should simply allow Saddam to spend another decade killing his citizens by the hundreds, spitting in the face of UN resolutions, and wait until he develops biological weapons that he can then distribute to terrorists. Simply brilliant! WTG, Morph!

No, we should be there killing hundreds of civilians, spitting in the face of the UN and still unable to find any WMD.

Blix and ElBarradei were keeping Hussein in check with UN sanctioned inspections.

Bush had to escalate unnecessarily to war.

Now we are beginning to see the results of his irresponsible, unsupported action.

2000 Presidential Election - Total Votes

Gore: 50,999,897 votes
Bush: 50,456,002 votes

Your results are wrong.

Electoral vote:

Gore: 266
Bush: 271

Remember, hippies, our founding fathers (that you like to quote so much) created this system. If you don't like it, lobby your Senator to create a new system.

Bush is going to liberate the Iraqi people whether they like it or not. Even if he has to kill every one of them in the process.

Wrong Leon.

Supreme Court

Gore 4
Bush 5

Our first Supreme Court appointed resident.

Fully in accordance with our Constitution, whether you like it or not. And my electoral count is exactly correct. Funny how liberal hippies like to quote T Jefferson in one thread, while attacking Electoral System in the others. But then, if the Gore would have won the same way, I doubt that sig would be in the place.

So how are his results wrong? Do you deny that Gore won the popular vote? Your electoral vote count doesn't contradict that.

Troops: After the recent suicide bomber attack I can understand why they would be on edge.

Van of civilians: Likely scared half to death, probably don't know english, and just wanting to get the hell away from where they were.

This is a tragic accident, but sadly thousands more civilians will die before this conflict is over.

You know what's funny? Any Iraqi civilians trying to cross the lines to the Coalition side are being fired on from behind by Iraqi soldiers (according to all the media reports, anyways) and now they are being fired upon from the front by Coalition forces. These people just can't win. :p

The Israelis would've done the exact same thing. It's you or them when they don't stop at a checkpoint.

Someone who probably voted for that fascist/communist retard, Bush jr, calling me a 'commie' is probably the biggest irony on the face of the earth.

Isn't it ironic that a Libertarian quotes Jefferson, who bought and sold human beings? Now THAT is irony.

To those who believe we should have alliances with other countries, take heed: "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship, with all nations -- entangling alliances with none." - Thomas Jefferson

That's an ad hominem attack if i ever saw one. Of course, then, by your logic, the constitution should be ripped up.

No, I was just pointing out an example of irony, which you totally failed to do. And your Constitution statement shows utter abscence of logic. Good attempt at a use of latin to make a point. But your attack on him calling you communist was certainly more "ad hominem" than my pointing out your complete failure to project irony. Nice attempt at seeming intelligent, but alas, you've failed yet again.

If you had read Bush v. Gore, you would know it was not just a 5-4. The justices brought an end to the morass on Constitutional grounds, and there was a 7-2 vote on another issue. It was clear that the Florida Court was grossly overstepping its bounds.

If you look at the recounts, Bush won. He may have lost the popular vote, but he won the electoral count - by 5 votes.

Get over it.

Seeing you get so much pleasure over such a horrific event really pisses me off. I can just imagine the poor young men who found themselves having to do such an awful thing because they were fearful of another Suicide/Homicide Bombing. The young soldiers are going to be scarred for life. I also feel anguish and great sorry for those innocent women and children that lost their lives or loved ones over this unfortunate incident. There is no glory when innocent civilians die like this and there is no glory when the Armies of Iraq resort to using Women and Children as propaganda and human shields even if this incident might not be that case.

We are not fighting an Army of men, we are fighting an Army of cowardly bastards who hold life in such little regard.

The troops were given new ROE's at the checkpoints Saturday. Warn them once and then stop the vehicle at any cost. I would like to read the actual ROE though. They fired warning shots and warning shots are not normally part of ROE's, rules of deadly force, etc. I certainly hope they are dropping tons of leaflets and broadcasting a warning about this over the radio.

How would you know what the ROE's are for the US Army or any other ground force. This rule was always in effect the last 2 years of the Korean war.

I find it kind of ironic that they send their women at us in a truck unarmed and we send ours at them in f-18's. :D

We can get over it, and still use it to bash Bush ;)
Not mutually exclusive at all. You are just going to get over it yourself.
Not that there isn't plenty to bash Bush on besides the election.

I imagine that the parties involved will be tried after the war is over.

You can bet that all parties involved will be acquitted. The military usually puts on "show trials" to bow to public pressure, but since the "jury" is made up of officers, nothing really ever comes of it.

A van that wouldnt stop I would immediately consider it as a terrorist threat or suicide bomber possibly.

I emphasize with the judgement of the troops on this, they are the ones to make such tough decisions with the world watching very closely.
