I'd argue that that all social media is tuned to bring you deeper into your misinformation of choice. It promotes further viewing by the user, which means more ads, which means more dollars. Again, they don't give a shit what you believe, so long as you're watching and they can sell more ads. This is not unique to TikTok, though TikTok seems to have a "better" algorithm. Facebook does it. Twitter does it. This is the end goal of all social media platforms. They sell you ads for your eyeballs, and they sell your data to various companies. You are both the consumer and the product.

I don’t use TikTok but is the basic story; Trump demanded TikTok be banned, it got banned, and now Trump is saying to not ban it? Is that the jist?

Also, I can wait to see what other right wing billionaire purchases it so the right can have almost total control over brainwashing social media.

I'd make a small correction and list it this way:

Trump wanted TikTok banned, because China!

Democrats and Republicans banned it, but while Biden was president.

Trump, Lord of Free Speech, will undo the silencing of free speech by the evil controlling Democrats and free TikTok.

All hail Lord Trump.

I agree that it is a fact of social media in general, but the format and tuning is what makes TikTok uniquely bad. Videos force-fed to users that look more like peers telling you stuff, giving it a veneer of authenticity, instead of it being proof that creators had learned how to game the system to keep their content in front of eyeballs.

And there was just no way to challenge the misinformation, because those videos would never be shoved into the streams that people rode the algorithm down.

Trump was against TikTok until he realized he and his people could use it to further manipulate his base now he loves it. It was him and the GOP that wanted to ban it at first then it was a bipartisan effort. It’s something they probably won’t get reverse by Congress but I can see Trump pulling strings to get it purchased by some of his cronies.

TikTok and bytedance and well everyone knows that you got to stroke Trumps ego to get want. Trump is a simple creature that will do anything if you flatter him or stroke his ego.
It's not just about TikTok trying to stay in business, it is good for China that Trump looks good in America so he can stay in power and get more things done. Trump=rot and shit. China wants America to fail so they become the worlds most powerful superpower. They aren't going to war with us - the best way to destroy America is from within - and that answer is Trump.

He is rot and evil and will rot America as he uses it as a bank account for him and the corrupt rich. China knows this and so this is the best way to defeat us - Trump himself.

China is stuck in a deflationary cycle, staring down a mammoth population cliff in the coming years, and has a property problem that threatens the stability of the government with no end in sight. They face a lot of problems themselves and I think will not be able to establish anything near the hegemony the US has enjoyed. What is likely to happen I think is that decline of the US will lead to back to an old school multipolar world. Which is not great because the body count from those eras is pretty insane and the US will likely lose many economic advantages that will make the country poorer.

I am not predicting China will be as powerful as the US was, but it's a simple fact, China wants a weak US, and Trump is their best case scenario to make this happen. Really no other country can threaten China anytime soon outside of the US and Russia a bit.

And they know this about Trump and America and will leverage that. Are you disputing this?

I'm not disputing that China wants a weaker America. I'm just doubtful that China would emerge meaningfully more powerful out of the situation. China and Russia have benefited from the stability, relative to history, that the US has provided. Unexpected outcomes become a lot more real once that is removed and they might not always accrue to their benefit.

Our brains have been turned to mush since the first advertising agency was invented. Commercial radio, TV you name it. They've used psychology against us since I watched my first cartoon on TV. We've been had for a long, long, long time. Truth is nothing.

Does China really want a weaker US? Are we not the largest importer of their shit? What is it that they would gain from a weaker US that they aren’t getting right now?

Makes sense, they have twitter and Facebook already. For the last couple of years Youtube shadowbans you for posting anything remotely leftist in their comments.

As a tradeoff for their regional strategic ambitions and global trade ambitions probably.

They gain an easier time "influencing" their neighbors and getting other countries to enter better deals.

I mean I'm not saying they want the US to be a third world country, They still want to sell things to us, but a weaker us lets them expand their sphere of influence and also accomplish things, like say Taiwan, that they couldn't otherwise.

If they ever made a real move on Taiwan and didn't back down quickly we'd be in full blown war almost immediately because of TSMC. No way the US is letting that get in China's hands.

Again you're thinking of today, give Trump and his corrupt cronies a bit of time to spread their rot everywhere. If you don't think that could happen with this new administration then you are naive.

You think Trump is going to slow our military buildup? Hell Trump would love China to make a move on Taiwan. Either he sends carrier groups into Taiwan and makes Xi run off with his tail between his legs or he gets to be a wartime president and have an easy excuse to make us into a full police state while getting the typical wartime bump in popularity. China making a move on Taiwan is win-win for Trump and if they're serious rather than just prodding it risks nuclear annihilation of their nation.

Dude I'm not talking about China invading Taiwan tomorrow or next year. But if you haven't realized yet America is for sale with this administration and the oligarchs running it. I absolutely believe that they can be so corrupt enough down the road once they have the system burning down pretty good that China could work out something with them for Taiwan.

Please tell me why if the oligarchs and Trump made an exchange that benefited them with China, That Taiwan is so sacred they would never cross that line. There is no line they won't cross.

America has been for sale since Reagan. As long as TSMC is lapping the competition Taiwan has guaranteed security from us. Now if Intel or Samsung fabs are skullfucking TSMC in ten years then we won't give a shit about Taiwan.

Comparing Reagan to Trump is your problem here. I mean that comparison is like comparing apples to seahorses.

Ronnie Raygun was an actor for California. He'd be way too "libural" to be a GOP leader today. IIRC he raised taxes in his first term and authorized the last "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants.

Sure, China isn't going to invade Taiwan tomorrow. But they can play the long game and wait out America's decline. It could be something as simple as our annual debt service becomes so expensive that we're forced to cut spending on defense AND entitlements.*

There has been a theory that because of China's low birth rate and lack of immigration, peak PRC will occur before 2030.** If that scenario is true, they have a limited geopolitical window to successfully invade Taiwan. I don't really buy that because a) their per capita income is still relatively low and b) what's more important is they wait out America's decline.

Also TSMC now has a running fab in Arizona, and our strategic goal is to manufacture a lot of our microchips domestically in the future. If that is successful, then our guaranteeing Taiwan's security against invasion is not something we'd risk a war against a global power, in their neck of the woods.

* Since the "war on terror" our defense spending has gone up annually at more than the rate of inflation IIRC. But weapons systems are increasingly costly, and you could argue we're getting less value from our spending. Ukraine has shown that cheap drones are the way to go, but you can bet that our MIC is not going to change anytime soon. As expensive as the B2 bomber is, we're already drawing up its eventual replacement.

** Their population has already peaked and has declined for the past few years.
