Well, thanks to all for the info. Just registered with namecheap. Are people happy with ripple? It seems like a great deal but I'm not sure if it will be enough. I plan on running a forum and addaction looks like the best place for that. I'm guessing that when it says "5 domains hostable" I can run up to 5 www.yourname.com's off of the account right? Eventually, I may want to set up a site for light ecommerce for a relative.

TIA

Nope it doesn't quite work that way, difficult to explain. I think the other 4 sites can have their own www.websitedomain.com but they're really a folder off your main www.websitedomain.com I probably just screwed up explaining that, anyone else wanna jump in and help me out?

Your other option is to get a resellers account but that costs a lot more around $15/mo.

sorry to go offtopic, but

$13.50/mo at dathorn.com is money well spent imo. :D CPanel/WHM blow Plesk and Ensim away in every aspect.

Yet another happy dathorn customer :)

Ross, actually thats what I meant. The other sites would have their own domain name but be hosted on my main site/host account. If that is the case then that works great, much easier to setup/manage for me.

Yeah, what that means is that you only have one main account and have the subfolders and all. But more specifically, they have to set their mail servers to respond to queries for your domain so that's what it mainly means. Up to 5 domains for which they will accept mail. Web forwarding can be done to any webspace without specifying the domain its being used for (i.e. I can open a geocities account and forward mydomain.com to that webspace if I wanted and I wouldn't have to tell geocities what domain it's for).

:)

dakata24 - How dare you go Off Topic in my thread and promote a webhosting hot deal!!! :p

Ranulf - Good. I should give that a try with my AddAction.net account, thanks for giving me the idea :)

I have about 15 domains lying around, doing nothing, now they will become my guinea pigs!!!

The first post mentions ecommerce as a feature; but I couldn't find any info on the RippleHost site. I'm assuming that "ecommerce" means they do credit card processing for you. Anyone used this feature?

It's a little confusing but the first post was later changed and the thread title reflects a different web hosting provider, not RippleHost.com

AddAction.net offers $9.95 for 6 months, 500MB/10GB/FTP/PHP/MySQL/webmail/email/forums/chat/eCommerce/cPanel

However when they say eCommerce that basically only means the shopping cart software.

In order to process credit card transactions you need a merchant account with your bank and some expensive service which will cost you around $25/mo PLUS a transaction fee for every transaction.

Before you do anything you should determine your credit card processing costs (it's NOT CHEAP) go to this forum where they discuss this topic quite frequently.

I second doteasy.
35 bucks for life!
Email and basic web hosting.

I really thought it was too good to be true.
What the heck, if it doesn't work I'll get my money back.

Aside from some initial email issues (due to my temporary server), now that I'm off of the temporary server(2 days), it rocks!

Thought I'd mention this since it's nice not having a monthly/yearly bill at all.

Thanks MitzEclipse!

Yes and no. In the web hosting world there are NO GUARANTEES that a business will be around next month or even next year.

However if you are building a website for a construction company shouldn't you pay more than $5/yr for web hosting?

They have been very reliable, good uptime, excellent bang for your buck (100MB/1GB), cPanel control panel is great, and POP/IMAP but Alan is losing money not making money.

If you have any sort of business or eCommerce web site you should look elsewhere because "you get what you pay for" is totally true. DO NOT expect any tech support from RippleHost and I am not joking.

What's your budget for web hosting monthly or annual?

I have addaction, and they have been great, I have not had any down time in the last 3 months, customer service has been prompt in answering my questions or problems. Cpanel is great, and the page load speed seems to be good. All for $9.95 for 6 months, if you pay the next 6 months up front there is not $9.95 setup fee.

That's true. You want a company that is reliable and can afford to give customer support. I can't see how they can do that for this low of a cost. Plus, they're probably stacking the servers with numerous sites....potentially causing a slowdown in the future. Right now I have my stuff on Ellis Hosting and I've been very happy. I just moved their a little bit ago, but so far everything has been great. Plus, you get the Ensim control panel. Anyway, with whatever host people choose, just make sure it isn't too good to be true. We all remember the Cyberwings fiasco a while back. I'd hate to see that again!

RossMAN or Redline SYS,

what would be a fair price for a good hosting service for 1 year? I don't mind paying a bit more for reliability. Is there some sort of website that rates providers?

thanks.

One thing I've noticed is that are a lot of places out there that rate sites......but there are so many that it is tough to find a rating site that is really reliable. So I simply having been basing my decisions on recommendations from friends, family, and members here on this board online. I decided on Ellis Hosting after a friend of a friend told me about the company. I trust my friend and decided to try the service he recommended for my sites. So far it has been great. You pay by the month....right now I have a $5/month plan......and also another separate $3/month plan (custom). That's one thing I liked, for my smallest site they worked with me to get it down to $3/month. All in all I'm paying $36/year for my small site and $60/year for my medium/larger site. I think this is very reasonable considering the service and support that I get. If you want to check them out, ask to talk to Ryan....he's the owner. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on this issue.

Loving addaction.net.

Only thing I can't figure out is how to get my boomer2.com to redirect to my boomer2.org. Looks like I could use an addon domain; but it hasn't worked. Anyone have any ideas? This would be a great feature.

In the domain manager I chose "addon domain", gave it the following info:

* New Domain Name: boomer2.org
* Username/SubDoamin Name: sub1.boomer2.com
* Password: whatever

According to the domain manager, this ends up creating 1 addon domain and 1 subdomain. Sound right? Do I need to do anything else?

Boomer2,

I'm glad that you're loving AddAction.net so far, same here :)

Go to your domain manager, delete all the subdomains and addon domains, create an addon domain again, now go to your domain registrar for boomer2.com and update your DNS name servers to your AddAction.net name servers.

Good luck with getting any tech support with RippleHost (you are after all only paying $5/yr).

My suggestion is to DELETE the database file and start over from scratch.

just pay 5 bucks and get another account... hmmm 5 bucks for tech support... :)
