Promotion after 8 months? at least wait a year.

For the last time people, I was not asking for a promotion TODAY. I wanted to get their thoughts on what would be taking place several months from now.

That is SOP, folks.

So they have a crystal ball?
NO EMPLOYER is going to say "yeah well in 4 months I can see you in this position at XYZ salary"

It was a feeler. It was to get a sense to see if my contributions (which are measureable in millions of dollars) were, in fact, being taken for granted as I suspected.

He confirmed my suspicions so I'm moving on.

Fine. The what exactly is the problem??? He didn't deny you, he said he was glad you brought it to his attention. WTF is the problem here? Wait until your review and find out what sort of raise they give you. It's that simple! Don't freak out and quit when you have no clue what's going to happen. If you are unhappy at that point, by all means..quit. It's just stupid to freak out before you know the end result.

WTF is the problem? The problem is that he was talking on a scale of YEARS.... YEARS of me working 80 hours a week doing tasks that aren't remotely related to my pay grade.

This job is too stressful for the level of pay. So I'm quitting. After researching other local opportunity, this company is not on par with reality...

Did you research this before taking the job? Why didn't you know this beforehand.

Honestly, If you aren't happy - the best thing to do is move on. Word of advice though, don't quit it before you secure another job.

But if you like the company, It might be worth the 4 months to see what they really offer. You could be surprised. Their hands may be tied right now because of company policy.

Either way, Good luck with your endevors.

you have much to learn young paduwan

getting a promotion has in the end nothing to do with skills but everything with perception

a lot of nitwits get some sort of promotion because they are good in their personal PR not because they have uberskillz

the ratrace is ALL about perception, being the ubercodemonkey doesn't give you the money

Because my direct manager is an incompetant twat, I've actually been tasked which much of what he's supposed to be doing, too. It's a trainwreck.

Have you been getting overtime pay for the extra work? If not, work 40 hours a week (and if you're working hourly and not salary, go after the lost wages that they didn't pay you in the past 8 months.) If so, you're getting paid well and shouldn't complain about it.

If you're friends outside of work... ask him (outside of the office/work enviroment)... on a personal level what he was trying to say.

I'm friends with a couple of people that treat me differently at work than outside of work.

Might be worth a shot.

A lot happened because the company didn't know what its potential was in the marketplace until I came in and evaluated the possibilities and corrected a lot of problems with several of our product offerings. Then it exploded. There was no way to foresee this, and while I don't necessary fault them for it, I do expect them to react a little bit. I made them a LOT of money in a very short period of time, and much of it was "out of nowhere". A small promotion from Sr. Burger Flipper to Burger Flipping Lead is NOT a lot to ask...

Here's a few other interesting points:

You go on and on about not being hired to "...MANAGE PROJECTS, PEOPLE, AND BUDGETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " Yet you did it...
You also bitch about "He basically started talking to me like he'd never even met me before. The bastard tried to policitically spin the situation! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! We've worked together for quite some time, and he specifically recruited me to come work for him at this company after his non-compete expired at our previous company."

Well thats exactly how a PROFESSIONAL should have handled it. He shouldn't have acted ANY different with you than if some employee from Sector 7G walked in and had the same discussion with him. Plain and simple. I actually work in my brother's business now, he is the Senoir Partner of a large law firm and I came in and took over the IT Department for him. He sits in on my yearly reviews, sits with me during manager meetings (I report to a the Office Admin directly and her to him), and I can honestly say that he has never EVER treated me any different than any other employee, except for the occassional "inside joke" or whatever and I have never treated him as anything more than "The Boss" Why? becuase he and I are porfessionals and understand that no personal backgrounds should get in the way of business.

He was talking to you like a regular employee because that is what you are and should be to him between the hours of 8-5pm. Once the shift wistle blows then you can talk candidly.

Salaried professionals do not get overtime pay. I'm not asking for overtime pay, either.

HERE's the DETAILS you want to talk about, but they aren't in this post.

The other thread is more so what I'm refering to. You sound like a child.

"Well, he blew me off completely. So completely that I actually lost most of my respect for him"

He blew you off because you come in asking for a raise 4 months before a review and only 8 months after working there.

"He basically started talking to me like he'd never even met me before. The bastard tried to policitically spin the situation! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! We've worked together for quite some time, and he specifically recruited me to come work for him at this company after his non-compete expired at our previous company. Then he pulls the whole "well I'm glad you brought this to my attention so I'm aware that this is the career path that you're interested in" bullshit. INTERESTED IN? IM ALREADY FVCKING DOING IT YOU STUPID EGGPLANT! "

You sound very mature about it. He's not blowing you off?!?! He's saying BE FREAKING PATIENT! HE will talk to you at the appropriate time. Your previous relationship has no bearing on a BUSINESS move.

Being pro-active is one thing. HE NEVER DENIED YOU THE RAISE. Are you retarded? He said he would speak to you on it in the future. He said he was glad you brought it to his attention. You're flipping out like a child who doesn't get his candy RIGHT NOW! Go ahead and quit. That's the most retarded thing I've heard. You aren't even willing to wait 4 months and find out what the end result is.

You can throw around your "I've done 10 projects" WOW. You're the man now dog. That's nothing in the grand scheme of things. You're ego is way too big. You got what you deserved. Move on and get a new job. But quit the freaking whining on the forums. You sound like such a spoiled brat.

Pwned!

I WAS NOT HIRED TO MANAGE PROJECTS, PEOPLE, AND BUDGETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes you were.

Their current generation of products were FAILING. THAT'S WHY I WAS HIRED.
You were hired as a reorganizational institutor, to bring about any and all necessary changes to right the company from failure.
it does not matter whats in your job decription of daily job duties... that goal is why you were hired.
And that means you will do anythign and everything to accomplish that goal. Manage, budget, HR, everything! and do it under your current pay grade and title.

sorry son... the days of "that isnt in my job description" is over... if the CEO wants you to sweep floors, make coffee, or whatever you'll do it at your current pay grade and title.
if the CEO wants you to manage 3 departments, budgets, and HR... you'll do it at your current pay grade and title. Job descriptions are a mere worthless formality.
You're not a unionized hourly worker... your a senior salary worker...that means you do everything it takes to get your job done, no matter what it is... and even if you're doing the work of 3 other people...there is no extra's or bonuses for it.
Besides remember the best workers always get most duties, but for the same amount of compensation...

Promotions and titles are based on experience and years of service loyalty...
Ok maybe they should give you a star of excellence award for you success... and a eraser wedged onto a paperclip trophy or something...
But not a promotion after 8 months...not even after 2 years. Maybe after 5.

the fasttrack to the top is a myth, it will never materialize.
you got that?

You deserve more, just move on.

I seen companies promote within 3months. 8 Months is good enough. Had a friend who gotten a 10k raise within 6months.

1) Why do you bother arguing with the asshats... they're shooting at you because it's easy, and they want to provoke a response... just ignore them..

2) I would land the other job first... not necessarily because you're afraid of not finding another job, but because you'll be negotiating from a position of strength. Hey buddy I already have a job, what can you offer me to entice me to leave.

3) You definitly should leave... WTF is up with that "over the next few years crap" I would bitch slapped the idiot right then and there... next few years... WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? I do your job you fvcking idiot! If he had said weeks that would be reasonable... years? you got to be fvcking kidding me.

Man the ego you have is rediculous. You're demanding a raise and title promotion and you've been there 8 months? Now all the sudden they can't run this business or THEIR software without you being there. I mean it's not like they didn't start the business without you and already have the products in place.

FYI: You don't bring value. There's a thousand more people out there just like you. Asking for a raise when you haven't even been there for a year is absured. You don't deserve it and you won't get it. You signed on for the job and your pay. If you aren't happy, leave. They've done nothing wrong though.

You're an idiot and haven't read what's been said. Their current generation of products were FAILING. THAT'S WHY I WAS HIRED. I evaluated the current contractors and what they had accomplished. We fired them. I hired 10 new ones. I rearchitected the software. We nailed it a month ahead of schedule. I also consolidated 3 of our other projects that had been in development by 3 separate teams in total isolation. We integrated the products into a suite, under my recommendation and guidance, and are now $2M richer and counting.

Ego? Yeah, I have an ego. I'm damn good at what I do. Who the hell are you?

Who the hell are you for thinking because you have a personal relationship with the boss that he's going to jump up and give you a raise. You expected him to say something he didn't. Go check out your locked thread and read what you wrote.

You were hired on to do a job at a specified rate. It doens't matter how good you THINK you are. You're nothing but a WORKER to them and that's all you're doing, YOUR JOB. They never outline everything you do when you're hired. I'm doing so many things in my job that I wasn't hired on to do. But you know what? I didn't say a word and when my review came around, I got what I wanted and had excellent across the board on my sheets. Jumping up and asking after 8 months makes you seem like a greedy person.

Point being, If you don't like the job...Leave. You can't force their hand.

You're a troll. Fsck off and quit sh*tting in my thread. You have absolutely no clue what the hell you are talking about.

your words here would be more of a ground for a termination rather than a promotion. 😛

I dont know about you or your company but I would seriously think twice about employees who are not willing to do extra work. The extra work that you do is where you get promoted.

Honestly, I think that you should have waited for your annual review and then brought up this matter after your annual review with your boss. You would first want to see on whether your boss even acknowledges the extra work that you have done so far for the company. If he does, then bring up the idea for promotion. If he doesnt, then first you would bring up to his knowledge all the extra work that you have been doing and have him acknowledge it. I would wait for your annual review and see where the company thinks you are at that point and then go on from there.

Also, by going over to your boss's boss, he could be thinking that are you expecting some favor from him and his words could be a polite way of saying, "yes, we do know each other but dont expect any favors from me. You will get your promotion when you deserve it".

Many times, even when you think that you deserve a promotion, your boss thinks otherwise. Dont we all think that we all deserve a promotion ? 😉 In the corporate world, its all about playing the game properly and hitting the ball at the right time.

If you are paid to do XYZ then do it and when they pile extra work on you knowing you can handle it tell them to f off 😉

And by the way, since you can't read: I'm NOT happy, and I AM leaving. Reading comprehension FTW?

(ps, I didn't sign on for the work I'm currently doing. You need bi-focals, son)

Dude you're retarded. That wasn't my point. My point was your stupidity to go in and ask about a raise 4 months from now and a promotion in title. You've only been there 8 months. You should have WAITED for the review and then discussed these things. Now you seem greedy and unappreciative for your job.

This has to be your first job.

troll troll troll your boat

From what it sounds like you got suckered into doing the work of your boss and you have just realized it.

There are so many unemployed IT workers out there, that I have a hard time feeling sympathy for you. Especially for a job in which you've been employed for 8 months.

Good luck with your new job

I do think 8 months was a bit too early. Should have stuck it out for a year and then seen what they were going to offer you. But hey no harm in trying to get more £££ right?

I never said I expected special treatment. Far from the contrary. I simply believe I deserve a promotion and a raise... not a fscking blowjob.
