That is ridiculous. I've seen people shoe horn engines into cars with tight engine bays but I haven't seen a manufacturer take it to that extreme very often.
So you got it cheap but it needs a new motor? Is it still a bargain with what a new 4.2 short block will cost? From what I googled you're talking 5-7k depending on which you put in. I know you've got the skill to do it after seeing the work you did on your Porsche, I just hope you priced it all out before you dropped the cash for the project car. German car parts are expensive.
Keep posting up pics of your work. This is cool stuff. I've never seen an Audi tear down.
I've budgeted for a replacement motor when i bought the car - got a line for a short block for $1K and another 11K mile that I'm waiting on the price. A used motor can be had for for ~3K (though saw one for 2, trying to track down the owner).
Big variable now is the head being ok; wet compression test came out within specs so I'm pretty confident in it. Got 11-12.5 bar, spec for new is 10-14.
The motor in my car is worth 500-1G depending on what i include; got a buyer from IN lined up.
I did end up paying a bit premium on the s4 since it's 1 owner car and it runs/drives. But If the heads are ok, the net cost to get it together with new clutch and whatever else should be $2K at the most.
As do I
More pics?
I guess they didn't want to run a diff in the oil panYou can really see how far forward of the front axle the motor is from that pic. Curses VAG!!

You used an actual proper engine hoist and not your arms. You sir are not a man.
Where are you from, Halik? Is that a Michigan plate?
You plan on leaving it stock, or got some mods in mind?![]()
Damn. If I had your skills, I would buy myself a Ferrari. Who cares about maintenance whe you can take care of it yourself.![]()
