Halik, you are one of the few people I have seen that could pick up a project like that and NOT have me call them insane.

Got the replacement block ready for the build and taking stuff off the old one. Gonna have to put in a large order for the various OEM parts i need. So far so good :)

Finalizing parts list, looks like i will be needing ~$800 of stuff.

Some of the crazy bits - audi wants $31 per rod bearing shell. That comes out to ~500 bucks for the motor... Needless to say I will be reusing the ones from my new block.

On the positive note, the ring set is only $80... so I'll splurge on that.

damn this is a cool project.

I did end up paying a bit premium on the s4 since it's 1 owner car and it runs/drives. But If the heads are ok, the net cost to get it together with new clutch and whatever else should be $2K at the most.

what's your total estimate now for buying the car and getting it up and running?

$8500 for the car + $2K budget to get it fixed - ~$400 of spare parts. Should be in the neighborhood of 10K.

That includes 11K mile short block off of 07, new rings, machined and decked heads, all new timing bits, new clutch slave, 40K mile flywheel and new motor mounts. Almost a brand new engine :)

wow that's a hell of a deal.

a quick edmunds used 04 S4 search says there are 19 within 500 miles of me, $12K-$27K, ave ~$22K.

Cool dude, keep us in the loop.

I still think you're nuts, but the good kind of nuts.

Woot!...so just save up another $8500 for this!!! :)

$8500 for a little bitty Eaton M90? You've gotta be kidding me... get one on Ebay for $150 even if you have to pay someone $2000 to custom fab a manifold...

Shit you can get a 3.4L Whipple twin screw for $3500, and M112/M122 Eaton blowers aren't even $500.

That's a badge tax if I ever saw one.

S4 is RWD biased?
i thought those were FWD based. aren't A4's FWD based?

No. The engine is longitudinally packaged and really designed to run with AWD...not FWD or RWD. Curiously if you get the gimped model, they do run the power to the front wheels...not sure why they do this...someone more knowledgeable would have to explain this.

Since the RS4, the Quattro in it and subsequent A4/S4 models redesigns have had a 40/60 torque split with 60% going to the rear wheels...so now it not only is AWD, but the A4/S4 it has a rear wheel bias. Audi has further improved the RWD feel with a new torque vectoring differential for the rear wheels that makes the car feel like it drives even more like a RWD car...while retaining the traction benefits of AWD.

Hey halik....I didn't catch if you already said this...but how did the motor ingest the metal in the first place? Any knowledge on that?

OEM parts coming this week ($800 worth), i've only been removing old gasket stuff and cleaning the block parts. I'll post more pics this weekend when I'm assembling the motor :)
