311 did nothing. However, there is a brand spanking new American flag on the building. I'm not sure whether it was my insistence on them changing the flag or my call to the various newspapers that finally got them to replace Old Glory. But what's done is done.
I sincerely wish to thank you personally for stepping up and doing the right thing. It could be that it merely took them some time to source a proper replacement.
Anyone who thinks symbolism isn't
also important or that casual disrespect doesn't breed more disrespect which only breeds worse, in a sad cycle of descent into the wasteland of ignorant asshole slacker shit-tardism can kiss my flag thong . . . while I'm wearing it.
Old Glory stands for all that is right and good in America, even if we don't always live up to it.
It is well and good,
it is very American that those who wish to protest the wrongs of our government be allowed to burn her in protest, and it is well and good that we don't put anyone in jail for any flag related actions, but it is also well and good that those of us who care about her and all the ideals she stands for endeavor to make sure that this symbol of our nearly 200 plus year experiment in "Of the people, for the people, and by the people" not be defaced or abused out of mere ignorance or neglect.
Folks, it's why you remove stains from your clothing and comb your hair and get that spinach out from between your teeth before you go out. Guys, it's why you zip your fly. Appearances aren't the be all and end all, but they
do also matter. Respect breeds respect.
Those who came before us sacrificed a lot, and many gave their all. I have been privileged to know more than a few of them. They did this so that we could luxuriate in the relative safety and prosperity we enjoy and yak our every little thought out on this forum.
Our flag is the visible embodiment of their sacrifice and of our highest, purest ideals, may she ever wave proudly and free.
Symbols matter.
