According to the article "UNCW Police planned to arrest Strickland on charges of armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and breaking and entering."

This wasn't just a shoplifting charge. This means that the suspect was considered to be dangerous. Who knows what happened but just because he didn't have a gun in his hand doesn't mean that he didn't threaten to have one. Obviously this kid isn't very bright. I think he deserved what he got.

But that's not what his friends said
Strickland was like a brother to many of his friends, said friend Mike Bernard. "He was the best kid, talented, gifted, determined," he said.

What else are friends going to say? How often is some child rapist or mass murderer picked up and during interviews everyone is like, "he was the nicest guy", "never had any trouble with him", "I just can't believe it about him".

Wow.... I sincerely hope the cops were 100% sure that this is the guy who stole the PS3s. If so I have no sympathy for him getting killed.
However.... if this is a screw up and the kid was innocent then some officers are gonna be in big trouble.

There are some very archaic views expressed here.

To the 'one less thief' people:

Are you aware that there have been, and still are, societies which do hand out the death penalty for petty crimes without a trial? Do you admire those societies, and do you want your own society to emulate them? These societies include communist China and the ancient Romans. Think carefully before answering this question.

Ok, I thought carefully... and armed robbery is hardly a petty crime. I'm not saying it should be punishable by the death penalty, but it certainly is a severe crime, and your analogy is pretty far off.

Have you, I wonder, ever driven your car above the speed limit? I suspect that you have - this is a very socially acceptable crime - and yet the potential for harm to come from it is much greater than the potential harm done by stealing a playstation. Do you believe the death penalty should also he handed out for speeding? Without a trial?

Let me know if I am misunderstanding something here, but it sounds like you are trying to say that armed robbery is less endangering to others than speeding. You like to ask hypothetical questions, so I will pose one to you: Would you rather ride in a taxi while the driver goes 65 in a 55, or have a stranger wave a loaded gun in your face?

Lastly, I wonder how you would feel if this was your child who was killed? I can only assume, if you are being consistent, that you would gladly shoot your own child 5 times in punishment for this crime.

I would feel horrible if it was my own child that was killed. I would also feel horrible to learn that my own child committed an armed robbery, but I wouldn't want to be the one to sentence him. Maybe this is why the parents of the accused usually don't usually serve as judge and jury? The kid was certainly owed a fair trial, and it is unfortunate that wasn't able to happen. I agree that the article was not fantastic at relating the facts regarding exactly what happened, so a lot of this boils down to wait and see.

Updated with pic of one of the suspects (not the dead one).

The robbery and shooting are even sadder when one considers that the PS3 is not as hot as was expected. (Not that anything would justify the robbery.)

Should be pretty easy to prove if they stole the PS3's. The robbery victim's receipt and the sale record at the store should have the serial numbers on them. We'll see if the PS3 in th eapartment matches

Unless the original PS3 Purchaser was BillyBastion's friend.

When police went to search a Wilmington house for stolen PlayStation 3 consoles last week, they brought heavily armed deputies because a picture on the Internet had made them think the college students inside might be armed.

Investigators had found an online photograph of a man who hung out at the house posing with two others and what appeared to be an assault rifle, pistols and a shotgun.
**Shakes head**

This is just crazy...over something that's basically just a gaming console revved up with too much hype.

Maybe Sony is responsible too for not ensuring adequate supplies of that black box of death, crime and suffering.

**sorry for the empty post above...thought browser wasn't responding when I first clicked on reply.**

Kid? He's 18. Punk got what he deserved. One less drain and menance to society

I'm sorry, but no one deserves to get shot for stealing.

too general. depends on what they stole.

It doesn't matter what they steal, they should be shot and killed over it. Maybe cutting off their hands, but killing someone for stealing?

Deputy charged with 2nd degree murder:

http://www.wral.com/news/10511332/detail.html
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A grand jury on Monday indicted a former New Hanover County deputy in connection with the shooting death of a Durham teen during a raid on a Wilmington home.

Cpl. Christopher Long, 34, who was fired Friday by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder. The charge stems from the Dec. 1 death of 18-year-old Peyton Strickland.

Strickland, a Cape Fear Community College student, was shot to death at his Wilmington home by deputies serving arrest and search warrants. Strickland and two friends were charged with assaulting a University of North Carolina at Wilmington student last month and stealing two PlayStation 3 consoles from him.

UNC-W police asked for support from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office during the arrests of the suspects in the case because of the potential that the suspects were armed and dangerous, authorities said. Strickland had an earlier arrest on a felony assault charge.

Nine heavily armed deputies accompanied UNC-W police to Strickland's home to serve the warrants. Three deputies fired shots into the home, and sources close to the case said they believe several shots were fired before Strickland opened the door.

Strickland, who was unarmed, died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Detective Larry Robinson, 34, and Sgt. Greg Johnson, 39, were been placed on administrative leave a week ago pending the results of investigations by the State Bureau of Investigation and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Sid Causey and District Attorney Ben David said Monday that both deputies had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the case, have been reinstated and would return to work soon.

Causey and David declined to answer questions about the case Monday and said they planned to make no more public comments about it until Long's trial.

A second suspect in the case, Ryan David Mills, 20, of Durham, had a loaded shotgun and a ski mask in his car before his arrest, UNC-W Police Chief David Donaldson told WRAL. Investigators also found pictures of Mills on the Internet posing with guns.

Mills and Braden Delaney Riley, 21, of Apex, have been charged with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and breaking and entering a motor vehicle, according to warrants. Both were arrested after the Dec. 1 raid on Strickland's house.

Meh

That article wasnt very good at conveying the facts.

University and local police raid a house inhabited by a suspect in a robbery. The suspect is unarmed and is shot (in his apartment) five times (and they killed his little dog too, hehehehe).

I guess I missed the part where it said he was unarmed.

The part anout how no warrent was produced upon request, and no ones talking makes me wonder too.

I mean the kid may be guilty, but seriously, 5 shots into an unarmed kid?

Like 5 taser shots? Hahahahahaha

OMG, this is sad. No one should be getting shot for stealing. At least punish the guy properly.

Now why was the guy shot? Did they think his PS3 controller was a gun or what?

Considering that some of the shots were fired through the door, they probably didn't even have a chance to see what he was holding.

Ok, you don't even fire shots through doors unless you're at war or something. This is not Waco. This is not even someone that's KNOWN to be armed.

Even if you were going in to arrest someone that's known to be armed, you would storm in first and maybe get in a firefight. Maybe even get SWAT to go in with tear gas or flashbangs. Maybe a utilize a riot shield? The point is, this is just excessive.
