Untethered 5.0.1 Jailbreak is Out!

So yeah, it's finally out, and this includes all recent idevices except the iPad 2 and iPhone 4s.

Has anyone tried it yet? Not sure if I should update my 4.3.2 iPad 1 now or wait to see what other users say about it first.

what do you get these days by jail breaking? did it last year and got bored with it

iFile. Run media files from an SD card or external drive using the camera kit. Solves the iPads single greatest weakness over Android models: no expandable storage.

The only thing I think I'd like back on my iPad 2 is RetinaPad.

Other than that I don't really care about anything on my iPad, So I've moved it back to stock.

my laptop is always close to me so it's faster for me to download via wifi or cat5 and install via USB than download over 3G

was going to use bitesms when i was JB'd but it was $10 and i was not about to pay for it

Unlock so it's not stuck with AT&T.

Other than that, double-click home to adjust brightness (very important to me), fast access to system settings via notification center, direct access to file system so you can transfer arbitrary files in and out of any application, emulators for older game devices, set default applications for certain things, and last but not least, direct Google Voice integration so I can choose to mask my real number any time I please.

i know people with T-Mo. i'll stay with AT&T

like i'm going to pay all that money for EDGE speeds and be limited in upgrading the OS

At least now I can quickly adjust brightness again under iOS 5, which is awesome! Missed that feature from the iPad when iOS 5 was introduced. For some reason, Apple thinks it's reasonable to include just a slider for volume in the application switcher when they can change it to brightness instead... because the hardware volume buttons should still be working right.

Well, it's only $6.99 and it's tied to your phone number, not your phone, so you don't have to rebuy it every time you upgrade.

Also, you don't HAVE to buy it. You could just deal with the ads if you wanted.

Finally, it's an absolute must-have for me. So much so that I won't buy a new iPhone until I can install it. I tried to do iOS 5 for a couple of days without BiteSMS and couldn't do it, so I had to go tethered JB. Something with Bite functionality built in to iOS 6 would be a dream come true for me. I don't think I'd even jailbreak if the functionality was built in.

They have that now. You can buy a iPhone from Apple and use it on T-Mobile without any problems. And with T-Mo starting to expand HSPA+ in to their 1900mhz spectrum, you might even get 3G at some point.

Other than that, double-click home to adjust brightness (very important to me), fast access to system settings via notification center,
I'm grouping these together, because I believe Apple will open the Notification Centet in iOS 6 to allow plug ins. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed on this one.

direct access to file system so you can transfer arbitrary files in and out of any application,
No chance. "File systems", in the traditional sense, are dead. Give it 5-7 years to filter to most people and maybe 10-12 to get through to people like you.

emulators for older game devices,
What does Apple have to do with this?

set default applications for certain things,
Not likely. Especially since the current system of being able to tell the OS that it can be used for certain file types works well as-is.

and last but not least, direct Google Voice integration so I can choose to mask my real number any time I please.
Again, I think this will have less to do with Apple and more to do with Google. Why would Apple feel the need to integrate GV and why would Google feel the need to give up one of Android's main advantages over iOS?

Really? Installous, basically all apps for free, all apps.

Technically not all. Developers have smartened up and started offering In-App Purchase instead.

When all apps use IAPs that are checked off against servers via a login mechanism, it would effectively kill off piracy unless pirates feel inclined to set up servers and proxies just to pirate a $0.99 IAP.

Well, I have an iPhone 4, and I see no point in paying $650 for an iPhone 4S just to be able to use T-Mobile, so if I can do it on my iPhone 4, it's all the better.

No mention of such a feature has appeared anywhere in the SDK, nor do we see a large number of developers complaining about the lack of it in the developer forums, so my guess is that it would not come any time soon.

If anything, custom Siri dictations are more the rave these days.

No chance. "File systems", in the traditional sense, are dead. Give it 5-7 years to filter to most people and maybe 10-12 to get through to people like you.

In 5 to 7 years, I wouldn't even be using my current iPhone, so until then, I'd still take file system and pay jailbreakers to be able to get my job done without whipping out my bigass 15" laptop.

My assessment is that... if I'm ever going to get anything done on this phone, just making calls simply isn't enough.

What does Apple have to do with this?

They have a gray area for this sort of thing, but generally, it's shunned upon due to the low level access needed to achieve certain amount of performance, and they don't want to deal with security issues that may arise because someone tries to access low level stuffs.

In other words, jailbreaking is about the only thing I can do to enjoy certain timeless classics on my phone. You may not be in the same group, but I grew up with Tetris and Dr. Mario... and I do play those two games on a regular basis during down time.

Not likely. Especially since the current system of being able to tell the OS that it can be used for certain file types works well as-is.

The problem is not that it doesn't work. The problem is that it's cumbersome when you make the wrong choice and have to exit out, go back in, wait for app to load, and so on.

Again, I think this will have less to do with Apple and more to do with Google. Why would Apple feel the need to integrate GV and why would Google feel the need to give up one of Android's main advantages over iOS?

Not a Google vs Apple argument. In fact, not even an argument at all. I simply can't integrate GV into default iOS, and I want the ability to be able to mask my phone number whenever I want to. It's simple...

Also it's useful for when I want to completely separate my work and my home. I don't want to carry two phones.

Well, not all, but a good 95% of them or the ones worth having, like GTA3.

Sure, if the person doesn't feel like shelling out $4.99 for the game. It's dirt cheap... so I don't think many would mind actually purchasing the game. The added bonus is that you get iCloud backup for game saves and also downloading straight from Apple's servers is a lot faster than from some Chinese computer...

Do note that it's over a gig easily, and downloading a gig from China at 10KB/sec isn't exactly a walk in the park...

I just did this on my ip4 that is on 5.0.1 and was using a tethered JB. It worked flawlessly. I am now untethered. I wonder if this will work on a 5.0 3gs that is tethered. Will try that out later.

Hm... I'm actually having nothing but problems. Cydia is a bit iffy in this release for me. It either takes forever to refresh packages, or it doesn't show any package at all, and I have had to manually restart the phone (hold Home + Power) multiple times now.

I too have noticed the package reload taking forever. Other than that all is smooth.

i played with the JB themes and my phone would always crash and reboot. and the reboot took a lot longer than with stock iOS. got tired of it and went back to stock.

the multi tasking was so slow it was unusable. iOS stock multitasking is a lot better

Fantastic!😀 All aboard the jailbreak train!

Untethered holidays

@pod2g has created a terrific gift for iOS fans — an untethered 5.0.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices!

Many of you have already been following @pod2g’s blog where he’s been keeping everyone up to date on his progress. And so you know that he recently decided to push the button on a release for all devices except the new iPhone4S and iPad2. @pod2g’s untether involves two separate exploits and a few other “tricks” — and since he’s taken the @comex approach of doing nearly everything himself, you know his plate has been full these past few months!

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Here are the basic steps for how to get it:
  • The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G
  • If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now! The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1 If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW! See the guides at places like iClarified.com if you don’t know how. Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.
  • If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam. The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.
  • Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration. If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup! You will most likely get into a reboot cycle. Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.
As mentioned earlier, @pod2g has spent months working on all the exploits and tricks in this untether, and many of you may be wondering how you can send donations. Although the iPhone devteam itself doesn’t take donations, we thought it was appropriate to provide a link at the end of the redsn0w run for you to more easily donate directly to @pod2g if you wish (alternatively, you can go right here). There’s a link in the Cydia package for donating to the chronic devteam for the Cydia version of @pod2g’s untether.

@pod2g is now looking for a way to extend this to A5 devices. Because those devices cannot use geohot’s limera1n exploit to inject the untether, they require exploits above and beyond those used for this release. Keep following pod2g on twitter or his blog for any progress reports!

Got the ip4 working beautifully. Now I gotta update my GFs daughters 3gs on an ipad BB from 5.0 to 5.01 and then apply this JB. She called me to tell me the battery died and her tether of course does not boot. This update came at the right time!

Well, confirmed. iBooks will refuse to open. Since I read PDFs and books in there, that's a deal breaker.

Another deal breaker that's been confirmed is the current release of iFile will crash on startup. Bummer.

Other than that, many others are reporting the same issues I've seen:

1) After you install anything, instead of a "Restart Device" prompt, it'll be a "Respring" prompt. After you choose to do so, only Newstand is shown. There is no icon for any other app, and the application switcher wouldn't show anything else either. Hold Home + Power to fix.

2) If you get a "Restart Device" prompt instead, it'll take almost half an hour for the device to restart, which makes it seem like it froze on the Apple logo. Don't hold Home + Power or you'll have to restore.

3) Randomly, icons on the springboard would just blank (white) out. The only known fix is to restart the device completely (Home + Power).

4) Aside from iFile, a dozen other jailbreak apps are also not working properly, or at all.

5) If you're on 5.0.1 with semi-tether, you'll have to remember to uninstall semi-tether first, or you'll have to enjoy restoring the phone.

6) Restoring the phone still won't fix any of the issues mentioned.

Looks like a mess of a jailbreak to me. It's not the first time a jailbreak has had issues, but it's a first that a tethered jailbreak has had so many issues, at least to me. I think I'll simply go back to good ol' 4.3.3.

No issues for me. iFile works fine, as do custom themes. So far, anything that ran on my tethered jb runs without issue on the untethered.
