Ok here's what I did to finally get iBooks to work:

  • Restored to 5.0.1 (wiped out everything)
  • Jailbroke using the latest Redsn0w
  • Installed iBooks 1.5
  • Installed the GizmoWeb ibooks fix
  • Restarted the device. Now I have two ibooks apps, one can be deleted, and one cannot be deleted (without SSH) as it is a System application. The one that cannot be deleted is the one that works. I deleted the other one.

I only have one nitpick with this fix, it seems to revert ibooks to a previous version (I think 1.3) as it doesn't have the latest 1.5 features such as the fullscreen and night mode buttons. But at least it works perfectly!

All I want is for my stupid apps not to crash like it was windows 98 reincarnate. I dont jailbreak because I think it will just lead to more instability.

Once you do a restore in itunes, there is absolutely no evidence of a jailbreak, so your warranty will be intact.

Thanks for the response. Having that answer made me ok with doing a jailbreak on my iphone, am looking forward to these cool apps in cydia. i am a developer, so wanted to do this anyway in ordre to start learning ios development.

Anyone using TetherMe?

It works fine, but whenever you enable it, it turns on Bluetooth, Wifi and usb tethering. I only want Wifi tethering. Is there a way to make it only turn on wifi tethering?

My jailbreak crashed (well, mobile substrate went into safe mode on respring) and only because I had an iOS4 package installed on an iOS5 device. Apps still ran, even JBed apps still ran.

JBing has never caused me more trouble, other than THIS time, and the fix was installing CrashReporter (and a report generator) and then looking at which thread was crashing, and the call stack for that thread. Once I had that, I knew exactly which package to kill. If you're smart about how you install apps (and don't just shotgun install all apps that you used on iOS4 thinking they'll work on iOS5) you'll have no issues.

Generally not. Only the very first baseband can be unlocked. The rest cannot.

Well, unlocked without the sim cards that unlock for you at least. You can buy a sim card that'll unlock you for $30, but I think you need to re-unlock every OS upgrade, or upgrade in a special way to keep the unlock.

Actually: Question - I've noticed that scrolling around on the homescreen stutters on iOS5 right now. I can't be bothered to remove the JB to see if that is the cause - does iOS5 stutter for people on the iphone 4 (not the 4S) on the homescreen when panning between panes? (For example, go all the way to the right. hit back once so you go back to the leftmost pane of icons. Does this look jerky?

Thanks!

My iPad 1 sometimes stutters in the menu if there's background activity going on (syncing books, installing apps, etc.) Other than that, it's perfectly smooth.

Did you try restarting the device?

Yeah, tried that. Wiped out my jailbreak and it's now performing fine. Not sure if it's something I did when JBing, and I honestly don't care, I don't think I'll JB again, at least not yet.
