Unstable with a mild OC.. what am I missing?

Hi. I have overclocked my fx-55 and memory slightly to 218*13. CPU voltage is 1.55v, mem volatage is at 2.55v 2.5-3-3-10 on a msi K8N neo 2 plat. I play EQ2 and get kicked out to desktop now and then with a "report this error to windows" error. How can I best diagnose what my problem is and how to fix it? The surface of my memory is very hot to the touch, but dosent actually burn you. CPU temps are at or under 50C under load. thanks for the insight, I'm new to this 🙂

Is your memory PC3200 or faster?

If it's PC3200, you may have to run those settings with a 5:4 or 6:5 divider or whichever one your motherboard supports.

We also need to know complete detailed system specs, not just a few of them.

Um, ok. I'll try and be more thorough.
Case: Antec Super Lanboy
PSU: Thermaltake 560W
MB: MSI K8N Neo 2 Platnium
CPU: FX-55
RAM: PC3200 OCZ plat Rev. 2 (2x512)
GPU: ATI 9800 Pro (128mb)
HSF: CoolerMaster Hyper 6, with 2 panflo 80mm, set in AS5
Sound: SB audigy2

Anyway, I was unaware that you would need a divider for this ram. Again,
CPU voltage = 1.55v, OC'd to 218*13
Memory volatge = 2.55v, 2.5-3-3-10
CPU Temp <50C under load

The issue is that the system posts just fine, and loads into windows, however I cannot play a high end game which maxes my CPU out for >2 hours before crashing to desktop.

If I am not missing something obvious, my question is what is the best way to determine if it is the memory or CPU and then how to correct it? I tried running at 2.6 and 2.7v for the memory, but the fact it takes 2 hours or so to cause a crash tells me the memory might be too hot, so I turned it down to 2.55. How hot should memory like this be allowed to get?

Thanks for the replies 🙂

If you're crashing in games, I would try a different video driver, or adjust some of the game settings. Guru of 3d has some programs for video that might help stability.

perhaps this is simply as high as your processor will go. 218*13=2.834 ghz

Also did you try the hypertranspost multiplier? It should be at 4 and not 5

not to familiar with ocz el plat rev. 2 i knwo its good but w/e

voltage on it seems very low.. 2.55? isnt the recommended 2.7 at 2-2-2

1. SATA ports 1 and 2 are not locked, are you using them causing corruption?
2. Set Vdimm to 2.7 2-2-2 or 2-3-3 all 1T (which ever memtest86 passes keep)
3. Set Vcore to 1.55 or 1.6 (which ever prime passes keep lowest)
4. Set multi to 13 and HTT to 215
5. Make sure ram is in slots 1 and 2
6. download latest bios
7. disable aggressive chipset timings ( in performance mode)
8. disable cool n quiet

get back to me.

Thanks you guys, I've been busy tinkering with your suggestions and here is what I can tell you so far:

miketheidiot: Thanks, I did had the HT multiplier on 4.

Dough1397: That voltage was indeed low. I adjusted to 2.7 and then 2.75.

Zebo:

First of all thanks for a clear and organized set of things to try and check.

1. Though I am not sure what you mean by locked, I am not using any sort of SATA device which I assume is a raid 0 or raid 1 array, correct? I cannot tell you much other than I have a simple 55gig HD. I'm not stuipid, but I am new...
2. Done. More to follow.
3. Done, worked like a charm.
4. That worked.
5. Move them from 3/4 to 2/1 this morning. It didn't appear to help the original problem.
6. Done (1.4)
7. Done
8. Done

OK, using your help I have managed a slightly larger OC as follows...

CPU = 233*12, 2.55v+3.3% (~1.6v), 4x HT
RAM = 2.5-3-3-10, 2.75v

Tests and the good news: I have been able to run EQ2 for ~5+ hrs, no crashing. I have also run memtest86 to 100% and prime 95 for 15 mins, both with no issues. I know that those are not nearly long enough, but I will run memtest86 all night tonight and prime95 more another night but EQ2 does push my system pretty hard. Temp is 51-53C under load which is about as high as I wanna go right now.

Not so good:
1. I have a memory leak. I can watch my page file fill slowly over a game session. I am assuming there is nothing I can do about this as it is software related?
2. Sometimes the game will studder as in it goes very smooth and then slows a moment back to smooth and the slows a moment in a somewhat regular pattern for a few minutes. This is usually when my page file is getting full.
3. Load times can sometimes be slow and sometimes be very fast as compared to my partner's computer when he loads into the same zone. Is that particularly unusual? (this too tends to happen when my page file fills up)
4. I didn't notice any issues with memoryleak before as I had 2gigs of very cheap PC 3200 ram. That is probably because there was more buffer available when I had 2 gigs in instead of 1? I do notice much better overall load times now though 🙂

The next set of tests I wanna try will be long term pime 95 and memtest86. I also wanna test a benchmarking program such as 3dmark vs factory settings and vs my old ram. Thanks millions for your help folks! I will also post again when I run those tests for longer.

Sounds like you need a new HD. I mean 55 giger is old and slow with 2mb cache and maybe even 5400 rpm. Look into raptor 76 or a new hitachi with 8mb cache.

What is EQ2? And what video card are you using?

Honestly you should'nt even have to overclock a FX-55. Being n00b and so expensive it's hardy worth it for a couple hundred Mhz.

If you do wish to OC I think you'd be much better off 2-2-2-7 1T @ 210Mhz and 12 muliplier with a mild OC of 2800Mhz. This is blazing because of fast timings. The 2.5-3-3-10@233 which you are using is kinda crappy mem timing. If you wish to use those types of timing ~280-300 mhz is the way to go.. And we won't go there.. much risk and complication involved.

I understand that EQ2 needs more than a gig of RAM. However, instead og getting another stick of RAM, I'd suggest uninstalling Eq2 and getting WoW instead. That'll solve your problems 😉

Ran memtest86 34 times with no errors last night. yay!

Zebo:
If I was playing HL2 or Doom3 I wouldn't bother OC'ing an FX-55. EQ2 on the other hand is extremely demanding. Also, I was unaware that a HD could slow the FPS in a game. Most of what I have read has stated to the contrary, but I will look into it. My first priority was going to be to get a new vid card. My radeon 9800 is starting to show its age.

Slash:
It only "requires" 1 gig, but it's looking like im about to need more memory judging from my page file usage. Oh... and I would totally install WoW if it wasn't lame :X
