Jesus guys, the game is pre-alpha. Pre-alpha! What do you expect it to look like? The guns don't look great because they're a mixture of placeholders from UT3 and half finished pre-alpha weapons. Yes, I think there is currently only one map that is even remotely polished (the Outpost one, stemming from the concept circulated last year), but again, what do you expect?

I expect them to wait until the game is ready to be shown before releasing it to the public. Other than that, I expect them to be able to handle criticism since that's what happens when you release a game to the public. Other than that, I don't expect much. Was just sharing my impressions. Maybe they should keep it closed beta while the game looks like garbage. First impressions are huge.

a new build is out. the flak gun is much better. there are more settings for the mouse, some really good new DM maps and a few ports like morpheus

i played one level like a month ago. it was just like plain white walls. and the guns didnt looks great. i don't know. it sure didn't look anything like that promo they showed? i think there is maybe one map with good graphics and the rest are garbage.

It's all a big work-in-progress. However, are looks really that important for an FPS? When you're playing, do you focus on surviving and fragging opponents, or do you pay attention to the looks? The maps will get decorated, eventually. The map CTF-Outside is next in line to get the "Outpost 23" treatment. It's going to be a fire castle / ice castle theme. DM-Lea was done independently of Epic by a community member, and look what a non-pro designer was able to do.

Haven't played in a few months and the game is looking good. Really can't believe it's a pre-alpha. No bugs that I'm aware of and runs well. Give it a try!

Latest build is pretty damn good. Plays great.

For whatever reason I decided to install and play Friday night and was hooked all weekend.

I've been playing this game casually since it early this year. it keeps getting better and better. i'm hooked. play mostly DM but recently CTF has been great. if they can keep a high user count it has a great potential of bringing the glory days of arena shooters back

CTF has been intense. I love the team work. I feel like I slipped right back into the love I had for UT2003 and UT2004.

You're not going to be able to play this for free forever.

Um... Unreal Tournament 4 is going to be free at release. o_O

Since Unreal Tournament is being in part created by a community of volunteers, the game will be completely free when it is released.[51][52] Epic Games stressed the point that it will be just free not free-to-play, "free means free — no microtransactions".[22] To pay for the game, it will eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and players can buy and sell mods and content, or just give it away for free.[53] Earnings from this marketplace will be split between the content creator and Epic.[54]

Unfortunately, my UT glory days are now far behind me. At 47, I find that my fast muscle twitch skills have pretty much abandoned me, and it isn't just a lack of practice ... I got beat around in CS:GO when I was pulled into that game by old clan mates a few years ago. It's not easy admitting that your best days are behind you, especially for a seasoned vet like myself.

I have a special place in my heart for UT, especially UT '99. Played exclusively on Cains Lair back then - marathon CTF matches on Face or November that lasted 3+ HOURS ! BrB ... I got something in my eye here ... :(

I've been wondering if this is going to happen to me someday. I've just gotten better as I get older though. 31 now. Wonder when the decline is coming.

Guess I should stop playing video games lol.

LOL

this sounds a bit like me.

my clan was CBGB and I played DM. I was #2 in our clan and could have done national but I wasn't that competitive. My job was to train the noobs. I really miss those days.

I have set up my own personal UT99 DM server. The bots are set to Skilled. If you ever feel like trying it out for old time's sake, feel free. Server name is CBGB test server.

You guys need to start playing instead of giving excuses.

Going to try this for the first time now.

I hope they're going to do something about the weapon positioning. In UT2004 etc, having guns shunted way out to the edge of a widescreen monitor was an undesirable side effect of the game being designed around 4:3 monitors, it shouldn't be happening in UT4. They seem to have regressed from some earlier versions of the game, where they had the guns horizontal position about right (just weird depth and angle), but now they've "fixed" it too much and gone back to the outdated system of having guns right out on the edge of a wide AR.

EDIT: Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

Vert- widescreen in 2015? Are they stupid?

I don't know if it's maybe from the corridor but the entire FOV looks wonky in the second pic and not just the gun position.

This October build is very optimized it seems. I don't know exactly what has gotten better but it's running very good on my old machine

seeing an uptick in aimbotting recently. got killed by an enforcer half way across the map when i had 199 health, among other obvious examples
