Unreal Tournament 3 for PC -- why don't you want to buy it?

I'm curious about why people aren't interested in purchasing Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC, which, IMHO, is the best online multiplayer FPS game that no one is playing. Is it that people just don't know what this game is about?

None of those options apply to me... I just haven't gotten the urge yet to buy it.

That and I don't have any money. :(

What is this game?

I saw that someone answered that they're unsure what the game is about. I think of myself as being somewhat of a self-appointed ambassador of the Unreal Tournament games and a promoter of its online multiplayer community, so I'll be happy to fill you in.

The Unreal Tournament games are online multiplayer FPS games with sci-fi type weapons. Although you don't use real world weapons, the end result is very intense, excellent game play. I've also heard that, compared to the WWII shooters, the UT games have a very fast pace that might take some getting used to, but it's well worth it. Another very important aspect of the game is that it is very moddable. There must be over 10,000 user-made, custom maps and game mods (all free to download) for the UT games, and the good ones are hosted on public servers. What comes in the box is really just the basic gameplay; most of the content will come from custom mappers.

Although the original Unreal Tournament (1999) and even Unreal Tournament 2004 had a high profile, for some reason the game's profile has decreased dramatically in recent years, perhaps because of competition and marketing from the WWII shooters. In fact, UT99 even won a great many Game-of-the-Year awards and you'll sometimes see it referred to as "UT-GOTY". One reviewer described it: "Has us addicted like crackheads on payday."

The Original UT99/GOTY game evolved from a single player game called Unreal which was revolutionary for its use of colors when it was released. Unreal is part of FPS history in that it competed with Quake II and its drab colors and was sometimes referred to as the "Quake Killer". In other words, Unreal was one of the premier FPS titles back in 1998, back when there were only a few FPS games to choose from. The game also came with a single player deathmatch game and it was from there that Unreal Tournament evolved. UT was designed specifically for online multiplayer game play.

Unreal Tournament 3 continues this legacy and brings back much of the feel of the Original UT99, offering Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Warfare (an evolution of UT 2004's Onslaught). Some of the games are played with vehicles and some are not. The UT99 CTF game was wildly popular and it was possible to find thousands of people playing it on the public servers 24/7 back in 2001. UT game play is generally fast-paced and very intense and in some game types you really have to hustle to get into the action and make a difference.

The UT3 game play is excellent and I suspect that it will have more online multiplayer longevity than some of the other games that are outselling it right now, especially after its fully patched up and after the custom maps and mods are out. Both UT99 and UT 2004 still have very loyal followings and they're still played online.

If you've never tried one of the games before, you might consider getting a hold of the original Unreal single player game and UT-GOTY. You can find them cheap off of eBay or you could probably just download them. Another option would be to get the Unreal Anthology (Unreal, UT99, Unreal 2--which was bad, and UT 2004).

To play UT online, there is a learning curve, but new players can become skilled and learn the game if they're willing to work at it and pay their nooby dues.

the beta demo was lame. it felt like UT2k4 all over again, and UT99 is STILL the best UT made to date.

I agree that UT99 is still the best in terms of game play. If you guys feel that way, you should join me and my friends at the Speedpug pickup games matches. Come to irc.GameRadius.net channel #speedpug and you can play with the other UT99 faithful.

Tried the demo, it failed hard. Don't have a desire to buy it.
Much of the failing was due to the console UI, which they fixed in a patch, but it left a bitter taste.
Plus all the unable to connect to server issues I had with the demo (I managed to play I think 2 or 3 times online).

I hated the demo, so I will not be picking this up. Crappy UI, foggy/shiny graphics, crappy vehicles, same old tired gameplay.

I wish it was UT2k4 all over again... UT3 is garbage... Crappy UI, nerfed movement, and slow as molasses game play. It's like Quake 3 with better weapons now. The game is almost completely unconfigurable, and no matter what gfx option you choose, it looks like ass. Highest detail gives you an ugly grainy blur, with inappropriate gloss on most objects, and lower detail makes it look like 2k4 without the fun gameplay. I always said I owed Epic money for all the fun I got out of UT2k4. Well, we're even now. I'll be evaluating future UT iterations much more closely before I buy.

I'd be the ask for it from a relative list for Christmas. Sure I'm 22 and my relatives still think I'm 12 and must drop a bunch of money on me. So I say buy me UT3. That way at least if I don't like it, I can just ebay it :p

To that end I'm still a rabid UT2K4 fan. So we'll see.

I own the game and like it just fine but the UI is beyond horrid. The original Unreal Tournament had the best UI with its drop down menu/windows style system. Why Epic moved away from that with each release is beyond me. The demo was also terrible considering how awesome the previous UT demos were (you got a nice chunk of the final game with those demos) and the advertisements are bad too. "From the makers of Gears of War!" is what they say..that is not what pc gamers want to see.

I don't mind the gameplay at all and I have fun with the game but until they totally overhaul the UI and fix up the server business then the game will not get the support from longtime fans which means very little new maps and mods.

The main reason for me is just the lack of time for gaming at the moment. I have my main PhD qualifying exam in early January and am increasingly getting tied up with preparing for that, although I should have more time available once that is done. The other issue is this:

no one is playing.

I was a massive UT fan many years ago, but I'm less interested in getting seriously into this game if the community is as small as it appears to be. In the last thread on this, people were bringing up some appalling numbers on the amount of activity there (IIRC someone said there were three populated CTF games at one point in the late afternoon, which is ridiculous). One thing I liked about UT99 is that due to the game's huge popularity (back in its time), you could always find a game running with a great ping and whatever map/settings you liked. The low activity also suggests that the mod scene won't take off with this game quite the same way that it did with the previous UT games, which is especially important given the small number of maps that come with the game.

I know, if everyone thinks like me then the situation won't improve, but I want to at least wait and see how things look a month or two down the line. I'm not hopeful though, as a high profile game like this generally reaches peak activity two or three weeks after release.

I honestly wish every game had the drop down / windows style UI that UT99 had.

Where's the option for "bought it and haven't installed it yet."

Heck, it's still sitting in the Target bag .

UT99 was pretty fun, I just don't like the futuristic genre overall. Really no interest in games that have super-duper goop shooters or rocket launchers that shoot more rockets with an alt-fire or jumping off trampolines a mile into the air while firing off headshots.

same here, others games are more appealing. I got Dark Crusade and it has been eating my time and hopefully I'll get CoD 4 for x-mas.

Poll is way too long and detailed.

I won't be getting it cause I hated Unreal Tournament 1. It stands as my biggest waste of money ever: $50 for about 5 hours of play. Originally got it on an impulse.

And this fast paced deathmatch-style stuff doesn't appeal anymore.
