Unreal creator believes G70 beats R520

well we have to wait for the chips to debut before believing in what he said....but it could provide a hint of whats coming

that's NO fun 😛

and you know better

As is well known, Unreal is "designed to work best on nVidia cards" or whatever...doesn't mean a thing.

Sweeeet! I can get that work done, and not drink so much at that party! Thank you Jesus for the time travel bonus!

Last time I checked, Sweeney was an nvidia fanboy to the extreme, so who cares what he says? He also thinks all gamers use nvidia, despite the fact that ATI ships 50% more units

I'm gonna call bull$hit unless you can produce a link. In which case, I will gladly retract my bull$hit declaration and make a formal, public apology. But, until then, bull$hit.

I agree. Last i check Nvidia still had an edge in market share. Due a lot to their low end cards.

Well, ATi can ship 500% more units, but as long as those units go to people other than gamers, ATi is not necessarily more prevalent among gamers.

hmm.. an obvious ati "fanboy to the extreme" enlightening us?

what are "units", and what do they have to do with the "gamers" you mention?

18mo ago your statement (while exaggerated perhaps for even that period) may have had some relevance, sadly ati has been obliberated in the gamer market this gen -- they simply could not supply the market, and frankly put too much emphasis on pcie, and have paid for that in marketshare, tho they are doing fine in other market segments (unless you compare them to ibm).

Nvidia chisels away at ATI market share
ATI's Q3 2004 lead over arch-rival Nvidia was eroded during Q4, the latest figures from market watcher Mercury Research suggest.

During the quarter, Nvidia added three percentage points to its share of the overall graphics chip market, taking it to 18 per cent, while ATI stuck at 27 per cent, its share in Q3, as did all the lesser players combined. Intel continued to dominate the arena with almost 40 per cent of the market.

The desktop chip sector's discrete segment saw Nvidia nudge back towards its Q2 share of 58 per cent from Q3's low 42 per cent share. During Q4 it accounted for 46 per cent of the market. ATI's still in the lead, but its share slipped from 55 per cent in Q3 to 51 per cent in Q4.

Nvidia took 25 per cent of the standalone notebook chip market in Q4, up from Q2's 22 per cent, while ATI's share slid slightly to 69 per cent from 72 per cent.

Combined discrete graphics chip sales were up 13 per cent on Q3.

In the integrated mobile market, in which Nvidia is not a player, ATI's share fell seven percentage points to 19 per cent, as Intel grabbed 11 more percentage points to come out of Q4 with 72 per cent of the market. That's likely to increase further now that its Graphics Accelerator 900-enabled 915GM, 915GML and 915GMS chipsets, part of its second-generation Centrino platform.

Overall graphic chips market for Q4 2004
ATI - 27 percent
Nvidia - 18 percent

Desktop chip market for Q4 2004
ATI - 51 percent
Nvidia - 46 percent

Standalone notebook chip market for Q4 2004
ATI - 69 percent
Nvidia - 25 percent

The G70 should be easily superior to the R520- ATi has told PC consumers to go to he!l and put their top tier part in the XB360 exclusively. It would be very surprising if the G70 wasn't a clearly faster part then the R520- not to mention having a better overall feature set.

ATi could have shipped the R500 for the PC soon if they didn't enter in to an exclusive contract with MS, nVidia has no such restrictions on their dealings with Sony. I wouldn't be surprised if the R520 was available some time prior to the G70 however, they may paper launch on the same day but the R520 is likely a simpler chip then the G70 making it more likely that it will be easier for them to reach decent levels of availability sooner.

The G70 was planned to be the better chip - it's a monster. So I've heard. The hardest part though about making a monster work is bringing it to life. "It's alive! It's alive!"
