FYI ,

I bought an ATHEROS® AR5213A chipset 108Mbps 802.11 A/B/G/SUPER G Mini PCI Card (AR5004G family) to replace the broadcom card for better linux support, kismet, airsnort, etc. - no dice. Laptop will *NOT* boot with Atheros card installed. Card does work in a separate laptop. Incidentally, if you remove the broadcom mini pci card you will have to pull the battery and disconnect it from power before it will boot again (configuration tampering feature?):(

Not to say that these laptops wont necessarily handle these PC3200+ sticks, but does anyone else question heating issues? Has anyone actually felt the ram chip after heavy usage. Although the ram is running at the same voltage rating, they will still have increased heatflow due to the higher bus speed. Most laptops have a hard enough time trying to stay cool as it is. The fact that the whole ze2000 line uses PC2700 including the higher models, makes me question if HP found problems when running at a higher bus speed. - Just a thought.

Cheers

I highly highly doubt that will be a problem... feel free to think that though. I will take my 400mhz fsb and take that risk ;) . worst case is if it has a problem it will hopefully be within a year and the thing is still under warranty. I seriously don't see it taking longer than a year to show problems if there are going to be any. I will be upgrading to a 7k100 hard drive shortly too :)

believe me, you dont want to have a heat issue with a modern laptop. I went through this whole process with a Toshiba laptop overheating. They replace the fried circuit boards with refurbished ones that cary only a 30 day warranty, so if it happens again you are SOL. And you will def deal with more than just one problem when heat is involved. That said, 3200 vs 2700 shouldnt be that dif with regards to heat issues. Of course, the same can be said of the performance increase. You will see a very little increase in performance for 3200 over 2700 in this laptop because 1) Not Dual Channel 2) Slow Processor (esp on battery power) 3) SLOW HD which will swap with memory often.

Try yahoo's FREE Konfabulator they have a nice selection of widgets for power, wi-fi and more.
However look at each widgets use of memory carefully some of them are resourse hogs, if you pick and choose carefully you will enjoy Konfabulator.

P.S. getting my my black friday laptop tomorrow off lay-a-way hehe.
I've been reading and enjoying this thread every day just to stave off pangs of laptop envy.

PC3200 should not cause any significant heat increase. The reason HP uses PC2700 is the same as why everyone else uses PC2700: cost.

FYI for those looking to pick up a 1GB stick. eBay has several promotional coupons right now, including a 10% off up to $25. Use that to get some good deals on RAM. I picked up this RAM for like $104 shipped. Haven't put it in my Thinkpad yet, so no comments on if it works, but a good deal nonetheless.

I'm looking for a way for the battery meter in the task bar to show the remaining time like it does on many other laptops...

lol.. I got a 515 on 3dmark05 :-D so embarassing... but it aint bad for a notebook ;) it "barely" runs bf2 on the lowest possible settings and I'm stuck finding a good spot and sniping... can't play otherwise... artillary strikes kill ya if you're in a battle ;) It lags ya quite a bit.. Atleast it is playable though. It plays well enough to pass time sittin in the library waiting for my next class(I utilize the university's wireless ;) ). large maps lag though.. I gotta stick to small ones like Wake Island

score is with a single 1GB chip of PQI pc3200 running at 400mhz fsb

Oh goddamnit, how did you tweak it to get that score? I had to overclock the card to get 516.

I'm sorry, I'm just not seeing it in the original post. What is the exact model number for the extended life battery of this laptop?

Yea, but now all i can get is 479 without any sort of overclock or anything. Whatever, never did like the ati cards cause of the driver issues. Not like im gonna try and play games on this laptop.

Does anyone have an updated link of the Broadcom Advanced Utility for the wireless card? When I try to download it, it keeps hanging up. Thanks in advance!
