LOL, that's scary :) Glad to hear the RAM makes a big difference though! One question: If you put JUST the PC3200 stick in that sucker, does it show in BIOS as PC3200 or as PC2700?

That's what I want to know too. I only ordered PC2700.

I picked up a gig of the pqi pc3200 sticks at fry's yesterday and the performance is A LOT better! It runs like a Turion! Anyway i ran cpu-z and says that the ram is running in single channel mode but it detects the memory right (pc3200). It doesnt detect the processor speed right (it shows 799mhz even when properties in my computer says 1599mhz). Anyhow i think that it may have to do with the messed up power save detection that the memory speed may be detected wrong (single channel instead of dual channel). But it really doesnt matter when i can run world of warcraft with most of the settings high (at 1024x768!). It also runs Farcry with all settings low (looks desent!). BTW i have the graphics memory set at 128mb. OH I ALMOST FORGOT: there is a bios update for our laptops on the hp website. It upgrades it to ver. 13 from ver. 11. Thats about it. If anyone upgrades the processor please share the experience with us!!! Oh, buy one of the last socket 939 opterons at newegg before they sell out!

Purchased 512mb Corsair from NEWEGG for $47.00 shipped and 512mb Kingston from BB for 53.00 tax included.

I wish I would have known that it would take 1 gig sticks of ram :/
Oh well, maybe I will sell one of them on EBAY and buy a gig stick.
Laptop runs great with 896 megs of Ram and 128 to video.

Runs UT2003 and ut2004 great.

Crashed Quake 4 demo with catalyst 5.11 drivers.

Maybe I should roll back to IGP specific drivers.

I noticed when running off of the battery the mhz would say 799 on properties as well. I disabled power play for the time being and now it states 1599 all the time.

If you want to use advanced options for WiFi, there is a Broadcom WiFi Utility available. It's mentioned in the Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver description, but you won't find it by searching the hp site.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene...ex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-36728-1

"NOTE: If the Broadcom Wireless Utility is required, it is available in SoftPaq Number SP31465. The Broadcom Wireless Utility is only required for users who need advanced user profile management, single-sign-on capabilities, advanced diagnostics, or access to wireless networks that use Cisco Compatible Extensions. Home and small office, home office (SOHO) users typically do not need this application."

It's not in HP's FTP for some reason, but you can get it from Compaq FTP
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp31001-31500/sp31465.exe

S754 only support single channel, but ATI's chipset does support DDR400 so that is all correct. Unless you change your power scheme such as it forces CPU to stay at max clock (Or use SpeedSwitchXP, that's easier IMO) then the CPU will be at 800MHz unless it needs to clock upwards. Looks like everything is working fine.

I got a 462. Awesome!

I got mine score up to 488.

I installed 512MB 2700 generic RAM
I updated to omega drivers and set to best performance.
I set the page file to 1000MB static.
Did memory tweaks and Unload DLL tweak from http://www dot techbargains dot com/hottips/hottip12/index.cfm
Defragged using windows defrag tool.

Hope this helps.

For some reason the link is being filtered. Probably some sort of spam filter. Open it in firefox if your worried. I promise I'm not trying to hurt your computer.

If I wanted to get a 512mb stick, and add it to the 256mb already in the machine, should I get PC2700 or PC3200? Can you mix the two, or is it bad to mix PC3200 with PC2700?

Thanks in advance.

edit: Looking at other sources on line, it looks like the PC3200 would be clocked down to match the PC2700. I asked because of the earlier post by Issares that mentioned adding a gig of PC3200 and moving the existing PC2700 to the second slot. I am assuming that all the memory would then run at PC2700 speeds. Is that right?

Your link isn't working right, just FYI.

Generally speaking, that is correct: Mismatched memory will run at the clock speed of the slower stick.

Using the Power Management "Max Battery" mode locks the clock to 800MHz. "Always On" locks it to 1.6GHz, Laptop/Portable idles at 800MHz and runs at 1.6GHz when more power is called for.

In Max Battery mode, I get 2 hours even just surfing the web with WiFi enabled using the bundled battery pack and I know that 12 cell battery is twice as thick, so it would cause the bottom of the laptop to protrude at the rear. http://hpshopping.speedera.net/www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/images/products/pb995a_popup.jpg

HP claims 7hrs and 15 min, but I wouldn't expect much more than 4 hrs considering I'm only getting 2 hours using the standard capacity battery they include with the laptop.

Using BatteryMon, I ran three tests which averaged about 3 hours and 5 mins use on a single charge. This is with the screen at its lowest brightness setting and with all unused items disabled. At the time of the tests, i was using multiple windows of firefox with wireless enabled, while also using the new Microsoft Office 12 Beta writing a paper. So at least with my configuration i believe i could reach the 7 hours mark easily.

I've also installed a 1 gig chip of PQI pc3200 in mine a while back(meaning like a week).. memtest confirmed 159(318 ddr) with the 256 chip and 199(398 ddr) with the 1GB PQI chip. It definately runs 400mhz speeds when you upgrade to pc3200.. I have been flooding that all over forums for like a week now lol.. I am just stopping here to let you all know as well. A lot of people are misinformed thinking it only takes 512 chips max, and pc2700 max... it's sad so I am doing my best to help as many people as I can. Although stumbling across here I may have learned something myself... is the hard drive really the biggest bottleneck?? all I have upgraded so far was the ram and a good old fashioned format & reinstall with nothing but the drivers and programs I will actually use like photoshop, adope pro, office, homesite, dreamweaver etc etc.. For the one who mentioned the processor running at half of its speed... it is a problem these notebooks have.... How they didn't catch this before selling them who knows?? but for $378 I might be able to guess how

the fix is here

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft...1145342&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-36731-1

install that and your processor will actually read at 1600... Maybe the original poster should post this on the front page?? It is definately a must.. I think it should be before the hard drive

btw, with 1GB of ram and the install without all of HP's programs.. I can run counterstrike:source flawlessly, and I can even run the "smaller" maps on BF2, not well though.. I have to have everything that CAN be turned off... OFF, everything else on low(including sound,) and even visibility at the minimum(50%) lol.. and as long as I find a good spot to snipe I'm golden. It really does suck and if you are near an artillary strike or somethin you're screwed but hey, what do you expect for $378?? I mean people pay more than that just for video cards on their desktop PC's to play that game... I was amazed this laptop could even run it though, not good by any means... don't install it after your upgrade thinking it is a BF2 machine lol.. u can really only snipe on smaller maps like wake island.. other than that it gets pretty choppy but it works well enough to pass some time in between classes while I'm in the library on their wireless with nothing else to do

I currently have the laptop, but I think I'm going to move up to a L2000 deal @ Office Depot this week.

As far as the hard drive being bottleneck. Yes, 4200 rpm drives will become bottleneck after some use. Why? Because right now, most only had their laptops for less than 2 weeks, so there isn't much data written on the drives yet. With very little data on the drives, the data is stored in very little fragmentation, which certainly helps in reading data. Once there's good bit of data in those drives, fragmentation is start to rear it's ugly head. If the drive had faster rotational speed, that might not be a problem, but since it's 4200 rpm drive, the speed is probably going to be reduced somewhat in reading/writing.

My upgrade schedule

Reformat Hard Drive- Hp installed some default system settings program that slows it down grossly.
RAM- First upgrade, stop dipping into pagefile every 10 seconds
Bigger faster hard drive- eventually when/if I really notice the difference
Processor- when the one year limited warranty is up.

The 7200 rpm drive in my desktop loads hl2 maybe 10 seconds faster- not enough to warrant spending $80 on a 5400rpm drive or $100+ for 7200rpm. So yes there is a difference but it really shouldnt be a problem if you maintain your computer.

I can't wait to upgrade the processor also, but no way i am spending near the price of the laptop on an upgrade now. I am glad that everything is so upgradable. I guess the next upgrade for me will be the 12 cell battery, as that is the main reason i bought the laptop. After that who knows.

click here for your proof ;)

it works.. only shows 1.12 because I have the 128 dedicated to the video card, now everybody knows for sure that 1GB isn't the limit. I am sure that will help a lot of people with making the right upgrade choices

Ok my mother is an assistant manager at our local Wal-Mart. Doors opened at 5am, I came at 4:15am (just to wait like everyone else, and I'm an eager bastard). I got my puppy for $378 plus 10% discount, ($366.66 after taxes). Funny situation. They only had 10 in stock. It was CHAOTIC! People pushing, shoving, biting, spitting, swearing, etc. I casually stood back and watched the sheeps go at it. Then I made way to the back of the store, where I'd pick one of these bad boys up. (I also picked up two Gameboy Advance SP but that's for another forum). As soon as I got it, (opened it up in the car, ofcourse), I re-installed a fresh copy of XP over all that crapware that comes loaded. Set settings on Desktop in Power Management (to perform at 1.559 Ghz). I ordered a 802.11g router, which should be coming in any day now, and I'm currently looking for the cheapest 1gb available. Anyone know of any sites giving good rebates? Pricewatch.com sucks these days. Thanks in advance!

good move on getting rid of the installed software.. best 2.5v 1GB stick for the price I found:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820141208

OCZ 512mb sticks:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227104

PQI 512 sticks:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141206

it is cheaper buying 2x512mb chips if you are looking to save $, they can be had for under $100 shipped(for 2 of them). At the time of this post the OCZ chips are cheaper after a rebate but it is a limit of 1 rebate per household, rebate link is here: http://images10.newegg.com/UploadFilesF...e/SH/OCZ20-227-104Dec07Dec3105Jw92.pdf

It was crazy in my store too, there was like 20 of them, but over 200 of us in line(atleast close enough to compete... by 5AM there was well over 1,000 that actually showed up).. I was like the 80th person in line(got in line at 3AM) and it was raining so while the croud was running/slipping/falling in their pack(on the tile with wet shoes) I hit the clothes isle(knocked a rack over too.. oops) which was carpeted so I sprinted and got ahead of everybody and by the time I came out back onto the tile I was ahead of everybody with dry shoes.. I was the first to make it to the electronics section :)

One last question. . . will the BIOS support the Turion or would it require that the BIOS be crossflashed from another model in the series. Sorry for all the questions. I'm pretty much a laptop neophyte, but have a lot of experience with desktops.
