No, there are many people that would rather NOT work and get free money.

The point is its not enough money to live as well as the person is accustomed.

For a single wage earner; that is probably true.

For where there is a second income, it becomes a paid vacation at the higher income level especially when one does no longer need to worry about paying taxes on it.

UI is intended to be at 50% up to a certain level of income.
A dual wage earner loses about 30-40% in taxes (State/Fed & SS).

So for a 10-15% cut in pay; one is on a paid vacation with no real noticable loss of income.

Many will treat it that way.

I was on it 6-7 years ago. I got the maximum which was about 400 bucks a week then.

Just ran the online calculator. I would get 415/week plus an additional 25 for a total of 440/week, the exact equivalent of an 11/hour job for doing absolutely nothing.

For two years. The numbers say that is 43,000 dollars for doing nothing for two years.

What state gave you 400+ a week? Michigan hands out little over 300 bucks, it barely covers most people's fixed expenses.

seriously though:

I went to Disney world on my credit card just before losing my job, I am applying for jobs in my field (higher education) but with only a masters it's hard to find a job locally and with attending school i can't move. Even so, i expect to be employed this September. I've been on for 22 weeks; My brother applied a month before I did and he got an extension and is still receiving benefits, he is at 50 weeks.

So when will those benefits get to me?


and yea, it takes like 20 min to do all '3' searches that are required per week; I put out more (tutoring agencies, CCs, etc) but I can imagine that only sending out crappy resume's 3 times a week would be more like a paid vacation for most people.

Being from Texas my benefits come out to nearly 1/3rd of what i was earning. I would also like to remind people that I paid unemployment insurance to cover this first 22 weeks;

The new moneys from the gov. is from you, the kind tax payer, and is much appreciated.

Is this for single people, couples where one still works or couples where both are unemployed?

I currently have several friends in the first two categories (several couples with kids and a couple with kids and a house) and they are doing just fine. I have one couple in the second group with a child and a house and they are doing ok - of course they actually *gasp* exercised personal financial responsibility and had a decent savings account

I am not buying it that people can't find jobs within 99 weeks. My entire company went out of business laying off thousands of employees. Of the 80 people at my location all of them found jobs within 1 year (that wanted to). And thats the Detroit Metro area of Michigan which is not exactly a hot spot of employment

Not forever. It depends on the state of the macro-economy. For me, this isn't about whether individuals are "lazy" or whether they "deserve it" or not. This is about an economy which cannot support jobs for several million people who want them. In normal economic times, I am opposed to unemployment lasting more than 6 months. In the present climate, I'd like to see more net job growth before lifting the benefits.

i'm currently unemployed for a few months, and been receiving unemployment for about a month. i think they do verify that you're looking for work. tomorrow, i have my Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment Interview where they will talk to me in person. kinda scared about this. anyone know how long it takes or how many places they expect you to apply for? this is unemployment in california btw.
