Let's do away with all benefits! While we're at it, let's stop all government spending too! Nevermind the fact that it would send us spinning into the greatest depression ever! You've got your guns, your bunker, and your farm ready don't you?

I'm with ya! I say we spend every last dime we can possibly borrow and then just give the people we borrowed it from the finger, either that or QE 3-15 can pay it all back.

How come you're only generous with other people's money? Or can you send me some?

Yep. Republicans listening to The People. Don't spend more unless you can pay for it. There's already tons of money allocated that could be used for the extension but democrats want more deficit spending. Listening to The People, excellent work Republicans.

yeah but what i dont get is how it failed in the house?!

it's still controlled by the same democrats that passed the extention last time. heck, ~80 of them are now lame duck dems since they will be out of a job in jan.

so how did i fail in the house? why did alot of dems have a change of heart?!

It needed 2/3rds vote. It wasn't a bill, just some kind of budget extension that required spending and without a bill it needed 2/3rds.

I think after 1 year of benefits you better start looking for a minimum wage job. Sorry but that is it. Start turning in Illegals to the feds and take their jobs.

Why would you take a minimum wage job when unemployment pays so much more? That's the problem if you keep extending it, nobody looks for work. When you pay people to not work what do you think they do? Not work.

Some people do. Of course, for 1 16 hr/wk minimum wage position at BK there were over 300 applicants. You do the math.

Minimum wage job - $342/wk (roughly)
Maximum unemployment ever received by me - $235/wk

Now, it IS true that I didn't have to work to get the $235 and so it was easier money, but it is NOT true that you make more on unemployment than you do while working. More than that, I don't know too many people that would choose to live on $235/wk given any other options. I live damn cheap, and that's stretching it even for me.

Max weekly benefit here in NC is at least $442. (About $1,800 a month, not too shabby IMO)

But what did you have to make for the last year in order to earn that? Sure, if you were making $50,000+ you're going to get more than the common man, but most people who got the axe were earning what, under $30,000?

I'm divided. On the one hand, I do know some people who have hardly been beating the bushes, just coasting on unemployment. (Including one who just dusted off the old resume and touched base because his unemployment ran out.) On the other hand, there really are not enough jobs available, of any kind, for the masses on unemployment. Maybe if we sent all the illegals home, but that's never going to happen. It's a conundrum without a really good answer.

I would be happy if we made them do 7 hours of work in the community a week for the check. Leaves plenty of time to look for a job or learn a new trade, the community benefits, and they aren't getting a free check. Of course this should only apply after the normal unemployment period ends because you paid insurance for that.

Unemployment max payments are 50% of your base pay.

so for $450/wk unemployment, you would have to be making at least $900/wK or roughly $48K/yr

Making more than that does not get any more $$$.
@48K/yr, figure 30% is going toward taxes so that makes a comparison of $450 tax free vs $600 working

Unemployment is taxed.

That works for me.

It would be harder to oppose if they would cut some spending, especially in the direction of that $1 trillion per year foreign policy.

I would totally support this. In fact, it would serve double duty since the job applicant could then list themselves as 'employed' by the state in some capacity, increasing their marketability.

As if there are any jobs really available lol. You obviously have no children in the 22 to 30 age group. And they want to extend Social Security retirement age so there's even less jobs available for them.

You are among the those still making it while whistling past the graveyard class. This shit really hasn't begun to hit the fan once the reality of the phony real estate market completely collaspes. The emperor has no clothes..

Oh, and I have no answers just like the conservatives and Republicans rearranging the deck chairs on the Titantic do not.

Unfortunately about all we can expect from the Republicans is a reduction in the rate of growth in spending, and from the Democrats a smaller expansion in the rate of growth in spending than they baseline. Only in government can you spend more money than last year, with a higher percentage increase than last year, and still scream about draconian cuts.
