More than 1 million people could lose their jobless benefits and health insurance subsidy in March if Congress doesn't act fast.

But Reid plans to address the jobless benefits deadlines when Congress returns next week, a Senate Democratic aide said.

6months was the norm. Bush extended unemployment benefits to 1yr. Obama added 13 weeks to that for a total of 1yr 3months.

Now some groups are lobbying for it to be extended to end of year.

WTF?! :q

Stop spending my tax $!!! End this socialist agenda!

your thoughts?

edit (11/18/10):
The $$$ faucet has been finally turned off!

House fails to extend unemployment benefits:

Yes, because the temporarily unemployed in 21st century U.S. are certainly just as oppressed as the starving peasants of pre-revolutionary France.

Damn straight they're not. These days, they have all these "homeless shelters" and "soup kitchens." And these panzy asses complain about losing their homes? Back in my day, being unemployed meant sleeping in septic tanks!

Everyone knows this.

Shall we continue to build palace after palace for the rich? Or shall we aspire to a more noble purpose and build affordable housing for the poor? How does the Senate vote?

Fuck the Poor!

This attitude, although comedy, seems more and more prevalent these days.

Fuck the "poor".

After working retail, I see all of these people who live off off unemployment buy themselves Iphones, Ipods, computers, and then tell their kids that they are going to go shopping for steak with their Link cards.

That is bullshit. They shouldnt be getting that type of stuff when living off the government when I have to work 40 hours a week just to afford to live.

Off course, where I work, the majority of the population is of a certain ethnicity. I am unsure if this fact corresponds to almost 1/3 of our customers being on either unemployment or Social Security/Disability.

Then of course, every other person is a Preacher and gets a tax exempt number. A city of 20,000 does not need 100 preachers that use the tax exempt number on their big screen TV or cell phone.

The problem with extending benefits is there is some portion of the population that will use it as a vacation from work. It is not hard to do the just the minimum requirement of job hunting and collect a check. I have known several people that were able to do this their spouses were still working.

The longer you pay people not work, they longer they will not work. Studies most people are able to find to find a job before their benefits expire.

Was it Reagan or Clinton that came down hard on Unemployment Benefits?

Two top Presidents, decide this is something to get rough on.

Obama? lol, it's a pass.

You know you have to work for a certain period of time to get unemployment right? And AFAIK it's always more than the amount of time you can collect benefits.

I took unpaid leave earlier last year when we had a work slowdown, collecting unemployment, and it allowed someone else to keep their job. There is no question unemployment benefits are direct stimulus and a job saver.

they're so oppressed they have cell phones.

People should be able to take out as 5 times as much in unemployment insurance as they put in. Rough calculation with a 10% unemployment and making the unreasonable assumption that the out of work workers put in approximately as much per person as the employed workers that should (I think) leave 50% of unemployment funds in the bank.

However long it takes to parcel that out per person is how long unemployment should last.

economies cant return to efficiency if the deadweight and excess capacity is not shed.
If we do what you say, there will never be an end to the recession.
If we just gave them food stamps+money for utilities (require documentation), I would be fine with that though. Those shouldn't have any effect on aggregate demand for other products like cars and other companies that need to be unwound so that their workers can go to other companies.

Ok, but when someone can get a job that pays as much or more than unemployment, but decide not too because they want free money, that is wrong.

If I were unemployed right now collecting $200 a week, then a job came along where I made $250 a week but had to work instead of sit on my ass, I would take it as it would be money that is EARNED.

A lot of people say fuck it, I get $200 for free without doing almost anything and dont work.

My mom is actually like that, she sits in her trailer all day and collects unemployment when she could have had several jobs by now.

Yes, it's better to cut them off and resort to criminal behavior out of desperation just to save the bottom line of the guv.

Sweet..a few more months of free $$ before I need to look for a job. 🙂

This is probably true in a lot of cases. I know a lot of white collar workers who just refuse to even try to get a job because they can collect unemployment for so long. They can work, they choose not to.

Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were LUCKY!

For most people, unemployment isn't enough to pay the mortgage, bills, etc..

Do you even understand the true meaning of "Let them eat cake."?

It actually has to do with government reguation of the marketplace. In France at that time, the laws were that if bakers ran out of their cheap bread, they had to sell their finer breads/pastries (which were backed with butter and eggs) at the price of the cheap bread. So Let Them Eat Cake actually meant that the bakers should be selling the peasantry their fine breads/pastrys at the cheap bread prices.

I don't think that's even legal in TX. You have to apply to or search for a certain # of jobs every week, and document them.

Hadn't heard that one before. I have heard that Marie Antoinette almost certainly never said it, and possibly no one ever said it.

In any case, it's now a modern day idiom which has a meaning that is generally understood whenever used.
